Bruce Arena says Steven Gerrard has tools to succeed with LA Galaxy like David Beckham, Robbie Keane

    http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...-has-same-tools-succeed-la-galaxy-david-beckh

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy had signing Steven Gerrard in mind for some time, but the process of bringing him to Major League Soccer was completed quickly, over the last three weeks, after the club convinced the Liverpool legend that their aims coincide with his.

The Galaxy announced on Wednesday that Gerrard, a 34-year-old English midfielder considered among the finest players of his generation, would join the club in July once his contract with Liverpool expires.

He follows former Galaxy star David Beckham and current captain Robbie Keane to LA from the English Premier League, and head coach/general manager Bruce Arena sees a lot of similarities among the three.

LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides his Three Points from the club's 2-0 victory over the Chicago Fire. Jose Villarreal and Robbie Keane scored as the Galaxy picked up their first win of 2015.
ISHIZAKI EARNS MAN OF THE MATCH PERFORMANCE AS THE GALAXY CONTROL THE GAME

The LA Galaxy made quick work of the Chicago Fire in large part due to a dominant performance of midfielder Stefan Ishizaki.

From the moment that the Galaxy raised their 2014 MLS Cup championship banner, Ishizaki had his way with Fire left back Joevin Jones. Time and time again, Galaxy midfielders Kenney Walker and Juninho stole possession from the Fire only to find Ishizaki streaking down the right flank with Jones in his dust. Given his success throughout the match, it was of little surprise that Ishizaki delivered the cross to Jose Villarreal on the eventual game-winner.

Up a goal late, the Galaxy added a second for good measure when a looping ball from Omar Gonzalez bounced off the head of second half substitute Baggio Husidic, and into the path of Robbie Keane. The league's reigning Most Valuable Player easily buried his shot from close range to give him his first goal of 2015.

THE INGLEWOOD KID RETURNS TO PROMINENCE

A strong preseason earned Jose Villarreal a starting place for the LA Galaxy in the club's first game of the season and the youngster rewarded Bruce Arena's faith by scoring the winner against the Chicago Fire.

Starting in the left midfield spot vacated by the retired Landon Donovan, Villarreal immediately showcased his skill and cunning making several timely runs. In the 65th minute, Villarreal delivered the winner when a Stefan Ishizaki cross was mishit by Jeff Larentowicz, before taking another deflection off Lovell Palmer, and falling perfectly for Villarreal who punched it in.

Just who would start along the left side of midfield was a major question for the Galaxy throughout the preseason, but, Villarreal's shining 69-minute performance against the Fire should earn him the starting spot for the time being.

A NEW MAN IN NET FOR THE GALAXY?

Brian Rowe earned the start in net for the LA Galaxy in their 2-0 win with the Chicago Fire, and the 26-year-old goalkeeper stated his case to take the reins from incumbent Jaime Penedo.

Penedo, the club's starter during the 2014, season, was left riding the pine on Friday due to a coach's decision. Against the Fire, Rowe was rarely tested as the Galaxy controlled the tempo, which resulted in the goalkeeper making just one save.

Given Rowe's confident showing against the Fire, Penedo will face an uphill climb as he looks to earn back his spot. Expect a heated battle in training this week between the two goalkeepers ahead of the Galaxy's trip to Portland to face the Timbers.

A week ago, the LA Galaxy could not have been more pleased with a hard-fought draw on the road against the Portland Timbers, but the script was flipped on Saturday when LA were left frustrated after a maddening 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo at StubHub Center.
The Galaxy were riding high after Robbie Keane scored three minutes into the match, but just eight minutes later, a defensive breakdown on a Dynamo corner kick, resulted in a Nathan Sturgis goal that was the final tally of the evening.

Following the goal, an energetic Houston side stood toe-to-toe with the reigning MLS Cup champions as the Galaxy appeared disjointed until a late second-half flourish that nearly saw LA take three points from the match.

After losing Sturgis on the Houston goal that ultimately sparked the Dynamo's rally, it was Rogers who had the perfect summation for the game. Simply put, "it was a bummer."

"There were moments in the game where we were matching their intensity, and especially in the first half, but I thought in the first half they probably outworked us, and that was probably a big difference," said left back Robbie Rogers. "We can't let that happen, especially at home. We can't let teams come in here and outwork us."

Center back Omar Gonzalez agreed while admitting that the result was a stark contrast to LA's excitement over their 2-2 draw against the Timbers a week ago.

"The last draw in Portland felt like a win, this draw felt like a loss. We want to win at home every chance we get, and when you don't it's very upsetting not only for the players, but for the fans. So the draw isn't good enough," said Gonzalez. "Next time we're at home, we want to get three points no matter what. We need three points every single game. So we can't keep dropping points, and I'm saying this now because it's very important that we get these points now because in the end of the season it's going to be very important."

No one was more frustrated by the Galaxy's showing, however, than their captain.

During the run of play, Keane looked visible annoyed as he tried to urge his teammates forward and find space to exploit the Dynamo. However, despite his efforts, Keane was unable to find the back of the net a second time as the Irishman missed two clear opportunities to give the Galaxy the lead.

Following the match, the 1-1 draw had left a bitter taste in the mouth of the Keane who admitted to reporters that he was not in the best of moods.

"We need to get better. We can't keep carrying on after every game, I know we're only three games in, I keep saying it's going to take four or five games. But when you have a game that's there for the taking, playing at home, off to a great start, and give a silly goal away. At this level, it's not good enough," Keane said. "We're going to get punished. ... We need to start being focused on that."

Keane, who will head off to join the Republic of Ireland for their Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland will not be present when the Galaxy face D.C. United next weekend, but the Irishman says LA must start to improve or risk falling into an early season malaise.

"When people come here, we have to understand as a team that people want to beat us all the time. And we have to accept that every week, that when people play against us, they want to beat the Galaxy," Keane said. "And the sooner we realize that, the better because we are not going to get any easier rides in any game today, the game against Portland was the same ... People are going to make it hard for the Galaxy this year, so we need to make sure that we're on top of the ball at all times, and make sure we're not giving away any silly goals."

LA Galaxy happy to escape Real Salt Lake with point despite chance to win it late

Another solid defensive performance, punctuated by three superb Jaime Penedo saves, enabled the LA Galaxy to claim a point Wednesday night at Real Salt Lake, and they were most pleased even if they missed a golden chance for victory in stoppage time.

LA again showed little offensively in the 0-0 draw but held an energetic RSL attack scoreless for the fourth time in the past five games, while extending their unbeaten streak to five games despite a mess of trouble with their lineup. On top of that, the conditions at Rio Tinto Stadium delayed the kickoff 62 minutes following a lightning strike during the national anthem.

“We should get the point and get out of town,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said on Time Warner Cable SportsNet's postgame telecast. “It was not a night where [we received] great quality out of our team. That wasn't the case. We fought real hard, and we positioned ourselves to win the game at the end. ...

“On the night, we certainly didn't play real well, but we played real hard. These are important points, and we'll take it.”

The Galaxy battled the elements – altitude, heavy winds and driving rain – and a rash of injuries that worsened before kickoff.
