Minnesota United joins MLS as expansion team
    MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -
Major League Soccer executives have awarded Minnesota an expansion franchise, making the Minnesota United FC the newest MLS club. MLS currently consists of 20 teams, and its goal is to expand to 24 teams by 2020.
The league confirmed a couple weeks ago that it was in “advanced discussions” with representatives from Minnesota United FC, but the formal announcement was made Wednesday.

“We are in advanced discussions with Bill McGuire and his partners in Minnesota to bring a Major League Soccer expansion club to the Twin Cities and are particularly excited about their plans for a new soccer-specific stadium that will serve as the club's home,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said a couple weeks ago.
But the odds of prospective owner Bill McGuire getting significant public help for a soccer-only stadium is pretty low. Gov. Mark Dayton has made statements that he would close the door on any state financial aid for the outdoor soccer stadium that McGuire wants to build near the Minneapolis Farmers Market.
“I congratulate [McGuire's group] on an apparent success bringing a team to Minnesota,” Gov. Dayton said. “And I think if they are doing so, they need to fully realize that this is something they're going to have to pay for out of their own private resources.”

The outdoor stadium could reportedly cost between $100 and $150 million.

MLS likely to announce Minnesota as next expansion location. The press conference and welcome event will be held at Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins who recently signed on with Minnesota United to pursue a Major League Soccer spot. It will take place at noon ET and will be streamed live on Major League Soccer’s website.

Minneapolis is considered a front-runner for a final spot in MLS expansion plans to reach 24 teams by 2020, a league source told Sports Illustrated this week.
Also, Twins owner Jim Pohlad confirmed this week that his family is interested in investing in a possible MLS franchise with United owner Bill McGuire.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank is expected to pay between $70 million and $100 million to bring an expansion franchise to Atlanta, possibly in 2017, SI.com said.
"MLS would be smart to pick a city like Minneapolis," said Aaron Pitchkolan, a United defender who played five years in MLS. "I think there is a lot of support here for a team."

Minnesota United soccer can't wait to move into Bielenberg Field House
    [IMG]
With Saturday's open house of the Bielenberg Field House in Woodbury, Minnesota United FC is one step closer to a new training facility.
United owner Bill McGuire contributed more than $1 million to the $22 million sports complex with plans to move in during July, but construction delays pushed that back. With the locker room and weight room still unfinished, a revised move-in date hasn't been set.
United will have access to 7,500 square feet of training space -- funded by McGuire -- and a full-sized indoor turf field. Bielenberg has the largest indoor soccer field in Minnesota, and the 90,000-square-foot field house is about the same size as facilities for the Vikings and University of Minnesota.

Minnesota will have priority on bringing their current players along to MLS.

This year's squad includes MLS veterans like Jeb Brovsky, Danny Cruz and Ben Speas. MNUFC also have one of the United States’ hottest strikers in Christian Ramirez, who leads the NASL with 13 goals and won the league’s Golden Boot in 2014. He has 46 career goals with the Loons in two and a half seasons. Other players to watch include fullbacks Justin Davis and Kevin Venegas, who signed long-term contracts with the club that alluded to an MLS option before this season, as well as center back and Woodbury, Minnesota native Brent Kallman.

MNUFC will join MLS in 2017 and play at TFC Bank Stadium
    [IMG]

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber today announced that Minnesota, awarded an expansion team in March of 2015, will begin MLS play in 2017, retaining the name Minnesota United FC and the club’s popular logo.

A new privately-financed 20,000 seat soccer-specific stadium is being planned for the Snelling-Midway community of St. Paul. Minnesota United FC will begin play next season at an interim venue, TCF Bank Stadium, while their new, world-class stadium is being built.

Speaking at an event tonight at CHS Field, Commissioner Garber reiterated the strength of the Minnesota market for MLS expansion.

“We are proud to officially announce that Minnesota United FC will join Major League Soccer in 2017,” said Commissioner Garber. “The ownership group’s commitment to soccer and the community, the area’s growing millennial population and the region’s rich tradition of supporting soccer at all levels are key indicators that this will be a very successful MLS market.”

Minnesota United Owner Dr. William McGuire announced that the club is ready to make the transition from NASL to MLS. “We have made great strides in the months since MLS expansion plans were announced,” said McGuire, “and look forward to making the jump to Major League Soccer. This next step is an endorsement of our great state, people, and values, and we look forward to jointly building this team as an important piece of our community.”

Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman addressed the positive impact the Midway stadium plans will have on the neighborhood. “This opportunity will bring incredible revitalization to the heart of the Twin Cities – made possible by the catalyst of this proposed stadium and extensive community input,” said Mayor Coleman. “We are so excited to have Major League Soccer here in Minnesota, and to bring the world’s game to Saint Paul and to the entire region.”

MLS Expansion Draft Announced for Dec. 13

The Expansion Draft will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at 2 p.m. ET and consist of five rounds, allowing Atlanta and Minnesota to select up to five players each from the list of eligible MLS players.

The 20 current MLS clubs will have the ability to protect 11 players from their rosters. These 11 protected players, in addition to Generation adidas players who do not graduate from the program at the end of the season and Homegrown Players on a club's Supplemental or Reserve roster, will not be eligible for selection in the Expansion Draft. All remaining MLS players will be available for selection by the two expansion clubs.

Each MLS club may lose a maximum of one player in the Expansion Draft. Once a player is selected from a club's unprotected roster, that club is removed from the Expansion Draft process and may not lose any further players.

Minnesota United FC 1, Colorado Rapids 0

In a match-up of the two teams at the bottom of the Western Conference, it was suddenly on-the-rise Minnesota United that ended up on top, taking the full points when Miguel Ibarra connected on a diving header for the only goal of the game in the Loons' 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids at TCF Bank Stadium. For the Loons, it was their second victory of the season, and their first MLS clean sheet.

Minnesota United FC 1, Orlando City SC 0

Adrian Heath picked up a win against his former club. Christian Ramirez made up for last week's blunder.

Saturday proved to be a good day for Minnesota United.

Minnesota used a second-half strike from Ramirez to edge Orlando City, 1-0, at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday night. Ramirez, who had netted a decisive own goal in a loss to the LA Galaxy in Week 12, scored his eighth tally of the season in the 56th minute when he was played through on goal via a delightful through ball from Johan Venegas.
