No. 12 UConn crushes Maine to reach 9-0

UConn has had trouble with zone defenses in recent years, but with seven players hitting from 3-point range against Maine, that problem appears to be solved.

Ryan Boatright scored 17 points to lead a balanced UConn attack and the 12th-ranked Huskies routed the Black Bears 95-68 on Friday night to stay undefeated.

    No. 7 Louisville routs Louisiana-Lafayette, 113-74

Louisville used a burst of sustained energy to wear down Louisiana-Lafayette.

Athleticism has been a staple for the defending national champions, but the Cardinals never let up offensively even after taking control. The intensity also helped their defense take another small step in its development, resulting in their highest output in several years.

Montrezl Harrell scored 20 points and seventh-ranked Louisville beat the Ragin' Cajuns 113-74 on Saturday.

No. 16 Memphis defeats Northwestern State 96-76

The Memphis Tigers made a definitive statement early to show they weren't going to have a letdown after a big win in their last game.

Shaq Goodwin scored a career-high 21 points, Memphis shot 54 percent and the No. 16 Tigers defeated Northwestern State 96-76 on Saturday. It was a carryover from the Tigers avenging their only loss of the season by beating No. 9 Oklahoma State 73-68 last Sunday to win the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Shaq Goodwin, No. 16 Memphis roll by Little Rock

Memphis coach Josh Pastner was disappointed with how his team played against Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday night.

Fortunately for Pastner and the Tigers, they found a way to win anyway.

Shaq Goodwin scored 17 points and No. 16 Memphis rallied for a 73-59 victory over the Trojans.

Russ Smith, No. 6 Louisville control Western Kentucky

Most satisfying to Russ Smith about No. 6 Louisville's victory over Western Kentucky was his teammates' assistance in overcoming the absence of starting point guard Chris Jones.

Just as important was the timing of those contributions that put away the Hilltoppers.

Smith had 14 points and 10 assists and Louisville shot 69 percent from the field in the second half to pull away to a 79-63 victory on Saturday.

Greg Whittington to play for Rutgers

Former Georgetown Hoyas forward Greg Whittington is headed to Rutgers to finish his college career.

The 6-foot-8 forward, who was dismissed from the Hoyas program late last month, confirmed to ESPN.com that he committed to Eddie Jordan while on a visit this weekend.

"Coach Jordan welcomed me as family and so did the entire staff," Whittington told ESPN.com. "The style of play is similar to Georgetown, but it's more open and he likes to get out and run."

"They will be in the Big Ten next year with a lot of competition," Whittington added. "I like the players on the team, the campus was nice and they have a good fan base."

    Wrist injury sidelines Chris Jones

Louisville point guard Chris Jones could miss the next two games because of a sprained wrist on his shooting hand.

Cardinals coach Rick Pitino said Friday that Jones injured his right wrist about a week ago and hurt it again in practice Thursday. Jones' absence leaves the sixth-ranked Cardinals (8-1) without their second-leading scorer and blossoming floor leader Saturday against Western Kentucky (5-3).

Jones is averaging 14.9 points and 2.6 assists per game.

    Rodney Purvis will have surgery

UConn guard Rodney Purvis, who is sitting out this season after transferring from North Carolina State, plans to have surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

The school says the 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman will undergo arthroscopic surgery Tuesday morning at the UConn Health Center in Farmington.

Montrezl Harrell, No. 6 Louisville romp past Missouri State

Louisville's final home game for nearly a month was especially memorable because of its precision in a lopsided victory against Missouri State.

Certainly, the sixth-ranked Cardinals have room to improve in many areas as they prepare for four road contests over 23 days, including a Dec. 28 showdown against in-state rival No. 19 Kentucky in Lexington. For now, the defending national champions look forward to building on their best overall performance of the season.

Montrezl Harrell had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Louisville manhandled the Bears 90-60 on Tuesday night.

No. 6 Louisville rolls past FIU 85-56

This was Rick Pitino's way of expressing appreciation for the chance FIU gave his son. He brought his team to Miami, and blew out the Panthers.

Russ Smith scored 18 points, Wayne Blackshear added 13 and No. 6 Louisville won its sixth straight, easing past FIU 85-56 on Saturday night. The Cardinals never trailed and were rarely threatened, outside a couple of brief early stretches.

Shaq Goodwin's 20 leads No. 15 Memphis over Southeast Missouri State

Memphis coach Josh Pastner has abandoned thoughts of pressing for all 40 minutes. No hesitation about trying it once in a while, however.

Saturday night, it made a difference, as the No. 15 Tigers pulled away from Southeast Missouri State in the second half for a 77-65 victory.

UConn had to travel 80 miles to get its latest home win.

    Cardinals dismiss Chane Behanan

Louisville has dismissed Chane Behanan for violating university policy, and Kevin Ware may redshirt after reinjuring his right leg, Cardinals coach Rick Pitino announced Monday.

"He just did not do the right thing over and over and over," Pitino said of Behanan.

Pitino said Behanan -- a 6-foot-6 junior forward who averaged 7.6 points and 6.3 rebounds in 12 games this season -- has not been kicked out of school and could transfer or hire a trainer and try to play professionally.

"I want to apologize for letting down my family, teammates, coaches, [athletic director] Tom Jurich, this university and the Louisville fans," Behanan said in a statement released by the university.

No. 14 Louisville runs past UCF 90-65

Louisville entered its American Athletic Conference opener against UCF fresh off an emotional handful of days following a loss to in-state rival Kentucky and the dismissal of forward Chane Behanan from the program.

If any of that was affecting them, they didn't show it.

Russ Smith hit six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points and nine assists as No. 14 Louisville ran past UCF 90-65 on Tuesday.

Houston beats No. 17 Connecticut 75-71

TaShawn Thomas stepped to the free throw line for what he called the biggest free throws of his life.

Houston had blown a 21-point lead but Thomas would not let the Cougars fall, coming up big on the offensive and then defensive end in the final 10 seconds.

Thomas scored 23 points, including two free throws with 9 seconds left, and blocked a late layup by Shabazz Napier as Houston rallied for a 75-71 victory over No. 17 Connecticut on Tuesday night in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

No. 18 Memphis beats South Florida 88-73

In a matchup of the American Athletic Conference's two poorest 3-point shooting teams, No. 18 Memphis found the range in a one-sided victory over South Florida.

Geron Johnson scored 19 points for Memphis in an 88-73 victory in the conference opener for both teams Tuesday night.

    Daniel Dingle to have surgery

Temple has likely lost sixth man Daniel Dingle for the season, as the sophomore will need arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, the school said Wednesday.

The 6-foot-7 Dingle, brother of former UMass standout Dana Dingle, suffered the injury in practice Sunday.

Russ Smith scores 22 as Louisville beats Rutgers

Russ Smith's stats looked pretty good, and the star guard and Louisville coach Rick Pitino felt the same about the way he played.

He could have been much better.

Smith scored 22 points and No. 14 Louisville made 41 free throws in an 83-76 win over Rutgers in a foul-plagued game on Saturday.

Re: Russ Smith scores 22 as Louisville beats Rutgers

The first victory over a ranked opponent since December 2003 before the first campus sellout since December 2001 had second-year SMU coach Larry Brown feeling like he can boast the nation's best college basketball product.

"I don't think any other program can think they have more than us," Brown said after his Mustangs, playing their first home game as a member of the American Athletic Conference, stunned No. 17 Connecticut 74-65 before an overflow crowd in the debut of the refurbished Moody Coliseum. "We're in a great league. Got a great school. A great city."
