Ryan Newman hospitalized after fiery crash late in Daytona 500 Ryan Newman was taken directly to a local hospital after a fiery crash on the final lap of Monday's Daytona 500. Newman was in the lead when his car veered into the side wall and flipped several times before crossing the finish line on its roof, engulfed in flames. The condition of the 42-year-old driver of the No. 6 Ford Mustang was not immediately known as safety workers rolled his car back onto its wheels before he was removed. Hamlin won his third Daytona 500 on Monday, becoming the first driver since Sterling Marlin in 1995 to win "The Great American Race'' in consecutive seasons.
