According to Chad Ford, the Clippers contacted Ray at a minute past midnight on the 1st of July and are right in contention for his services. Also claims the Supes will entertain sign and trade offers. Maggette, Wilcox and a first?

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Iron Shiek:</div><div class="quote_post">That trade going down has as much chance of happening as Marvin Williams winning Rookie of the Year.</div> I wouldn't say there was that good a chance. I expect when all is said and done, Ray to be a Sonics, but I thought this was interesting and worthy of discussion anyway. The Clippers seem to be looking to trade Maggette to make room for Simmons, although to Boston for Pierce seems a more likely scenario if any.
It is a mini version of Kobe's use of the Clippers. He has no interest in them, but it is in his own interests to say that he does.

This is just another bargaining chip that Ray can use to try and get more money out of the owners pockets. Hopefully management will call his bluff and he'll return next year for a reasonable price.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Clippers have emerged as another strong candidate to lure away All-Star guard Ray Allen, who became an unrestricted free agent Friday. The Clippers have an estimated $16 million available under the salary cap, and with Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Shaun Livingston, Chris Kaman and Chris Wilcox already under contract, the Clippers could offer Allen most of their available money. It is believed they could offer Allen a five-year contract for $89 million ? though that is contingent on the details of the league?s new collective bargaining agreement. Players and teams were free to begin negotiating Friday, but contracts cannot be signed until July 22.</div> <font size="1">Full Story courtesy of Frank Hughes and the News Tribune.</font>
I'm a Maggette supporter and I figure his time with the Clips is somewhat cancelled out by his one year at Duke I'm still bitter we traded him for a creaky Ho Grant. Wilcox can be a good pro but he needs to work on his consistency, and he's strictly a 4, I think. Still, he has a nice baby hook and some decent athletic ability.
I didn't actually realise the Clippers had enough money to sign Ray outright, which changes things a bit. I think they have the pieces in place to really have a crack at the playoffs in the next few seasons - they certainly have a lot of talent on that roster, it might just need a player like Ray to push them over that hump. I don't think Ray going there is as unrealistic as people think anymore, especially with Livingston and Brand around, but I still wouldn't predict. They love Simmons though. If Ray is determined to go to LA (again, extremely unlikely, but still should be entertained in theory) then we should push for a sign & trade for Maggette. That way the Clips save enough space to get Simmons back, and we'll have a bit of cash to spend as well.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Roland Hood:</div><div class="quote_post"> I'm still bitter we traded him for a creaky Ho Grant.</div> Pretty sure that was done purely for cap purposes.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Sir Desmond:</div><div class="quote_post">Pretty sure that was done purely for cap purposes.</div> I thought we got him as a cagey vet with rings who'd get us over the hump...I can't remember the roster at the time, though. Also, didn't we have Simmons at one point? Another case of a young player blossoming once he got out from under Nate's iron fist
We got Grant, but we also got rid of the contracts Dale Ellis, Don McLean and Billy Owens. I always thought we did it in anticipation of GP coming out of contract, but I'm told when Grant came off the books, Lewis was out of contract. That makes sense. We drafted Simmons and shipped him off to Washington for Drobnjak too. FWIW, the Clips have already tried to entertain a Maggette for Pierce deal, but Boston said no. I will not be surprised if they try to do the same sort of thing with us and Ray.
ya the Clippers are probably going to start requesting a trade that involves allen. If this trade would happen I see the clippers maybe 8th seed next season, but anyways the sonics shouldnt trade rayray
