man, after today, Akers should definitely rethink kicking when he is injured.vhe kicked twice to satrt off game, and nearly killed his knee, kicked a few X-points, and then game winning fild goal. he was in so much pain, he walked off the field in tears. even still i am happy the eagles won, but i think we did some long term damage to our kicker.
Akers did not look good at all after that kick. He appeared to be in a lot of pain afterwards. On the brightside, even though he injured himself even more, he got to kick the game winning FG for his team.
That man is pretty cool...he knew that he had to go in to win the game and did what he had to. His season is probably over, but he got this one for the team. Impressive.
I give him major props for this game, anyone who has had a hamstring injury knows it hurts to walk, but to kick with all your might? jeez, i dont wanna think about it, major props
yea, ibve always liked Akers, he was always rewally good at what he did, but after today, i have even more respect for the dude
The Eagles should have never put him in this situation in the first place. Why they didn't sign a backup kicker this past week is beyond me. You're telling me there's NO ONE on the team that's worth cutting? They lucked out... They gambled and won. Good for them.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BearsFan1)</div><div class='quotemain'>He is just a kicker</div> Yeah & there were several games that were won & lost by a kicker yesterday. Including a certain #4 ending the Steelers winning streak.

W/O a good K you're doomed to fail in tight games.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BearsFan1)</div><div class='quotemain'> So you are saying that a team without good kicker cant win close games?</div> It's not as b&w as u'd like to make it out to be, but YES in general that is true IMO.
A team without a kicker becomes singificantly worse. Take it from a fan of a team that had to deal with subpar kickers for years. It is one of the most imortant positions on the team. There is a reason that the all-time scoring leader in the NFL is a kicker (Gary Anderson). In fact, here is a list of the all time scoring leaders in the NFL: 1. Gary Anderson - 2,348 2. Morten Anderson - 2,257 3. George Blanda - 2,002 4. Norm Johnson - 1,736 5. Nick Lowrey - 1,711 6. Jan Stenerud - 1,699 7. Eddie Murray - 1,594 8. Al Del Greco - 1,584 9. Pat Leahy - 1,470 10. Jim Turner - 1,439 11. John Carney - 1,431 12. Matt Bahr - 1,422 13. Mark Moseley - 1,382 14. Jim Bakken - 1,380 15. Steve Christie - 1,379 16. Fred Cox - 1,365 17. Matt Stover - 1,360 18. Lou Groza - 1,349 19. Jason Elam - 1,302 20. Jim Breech - 1,246 Ask New England about the benefits of having a good kicker. Games are won and lost on field goals.

Do you know how many kickers are in the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame? One. Jan Stenerud. However, KCGSC can bare witness that I've been saying there is another kicker who has earned his place in Canton when he's finished. Adam Vinatieri.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BearsFan1)</div><div class='quotemain'>He is just a kicker</div> Nope. "Just a kicker" would have whimped out. Madden selected your beloved "Butthead" Butler to his All-Madden team simply for the fact that he didn't act like a kicker. To your point, I remember the Rams in their heyday playing a game without a kicker, going for 2 every time on PATs and coming out ahead I think. But I give him props for doing what he did, not necessarily having anything to do with the position he plays. We don't have enough Jack Youngblood stories today.

Adam Vinatieri.</div> Of course there is only one kicker in the HOF. A kicker who does his job is not going to be remarkable. That does not make him any less important to the team. Teams rely on having a good kicker to put games out of reach. If a kicker botches several field goals, they are blamed for the loss. If they make regular field goals there is nothing special. I guess they are kind of like offensive linemen in that way. In addition, if a kicker were not an extremely important part of the game, I doubt any coach would reserve a roster spot for that position. There are plenty of athletic men on a football team that could make 50% of their field goals if given the chance. However, having a dedicated kicker who can make 80% of their field goals, including long distance field goals, is a distinct advantage and a necessity in today's NFL.
