You guys are too hard on Telfair. Maxwell if anything is probably going to be happy to let Telfair wear his number.

I didn't hear any whining in there, anybody else?

I think the only quote the article offered was "I just got his number, I'm going to call him."

    What a pansy!

Though I don't know that much about Maxwells personality, I still think it's a mistake to ask, even if Maxwell is a really nice guy. Your a young player who hasn't amounted to anything in the league yet, you can't go up to him and ask to unretire his number just so you can wear it.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting joekickass:</div><div class="quote_post">Guys, Max will likely let him wear 31. I reckon he'll be honour a young guy has asked to. Just hope Tel gets across the history behind the number 31 and wants to create a similar history. Could it inspire Tel to play better?

At Richmond (AFL team) the number 17 associated with the best player ever at the club, Jack 'captain blood' Dyer, is given to the team captain to wear. The idea is to hnour Captain Blood and hope that the captain embodies his same passionate appraoch to football. Why dont the Celts start doing this? Before they run out of number.

Put Del West in number 3 and make him learn about DJ and how he played. GG in 17.........tell him to play like hondo.with hops though.</div>

I don't think asking for the number and the approach was disrespectful, but I do find it selfish. It's really up to Maxwell, and he probably would be honored to have Telfair wear his number. However, I feel Telfair should have to earn the right to wear #31.

I like the idea Joekickass brought up, with players being inspired by wearing the number of previous legends. However, Telfair doesn't want the number to honor Maxwell, he wants the number because he's always worn it.

It is nice that he is going to ask politely, but liek shape said, it has nothing to do with maxwell. Telfair wants it because it is his number. If Telfair has had a solid career so far then i would have nothing wrong with it, but what if telfair just completely drops off the map, which i see as a very likely thing to him to do.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Squishface:</div><div class="quote_post">We're very sorry the Cavs have never amounted to anything. If they kept rolling out hall of famers and championships, I'm sure they would an excuse to retire the numbers of NBA legends. Look at the guys who are retired by the team, they are some of the most influential and talented players of their respective eras.

Why do we have to put up with this bull?</div>When your players have to start wearing triple digits, you'll see where I'm going. It's obvious they have had a lot of great players, but when you retire that many, it takes a little something away from the honor.

I'm not concerned if you agree with my opinion or not, I'm just voicing it. It was barely anything anyone could have percieved as an attack on your team.

There are 101 numbers available at any given time and 20 players (max) on a team. I'm sure the Celtics will manage.

That's nonsense. That's all I have to say.

    Just nonsense.

Not yet we don't, but he showed up at TVSL wearing 30. The season won't be long now, so let's not worry about what number he wears until then.

    My thoughts exactly.

It would be like Andrew Bynum of the Lakers wanting to change his number to 13 (Wilt) or 32(Magic) just because. He should have just looked for another number.

The difference is that Wilt's dead and Magic's a little too self-important to let that happen. Not to mention, basketball history has a little more in store for Magic Johnson than it ever did for Max, and Max knows that too. Cedric Maxwell is a down-to-earth fellow, who never liked much of a fuss being made over him, and still doesn't. If someone came to him looking to wear his number because it was the least bit significant to them, he would probably be happy to oblige. At the same time, I could see where lesser students of said game might tell him to go pound sand, because he hasn't accomplished anything. But Max wants the Celtics to be proud and hold their heads high, and it if takes his number for one of them to do that, I'm sure he'd help out.

I don't disagree but I still think the same.

Ain't no thang. I just want to make sure everyone knows I'm not knocking Magic or Wilt in that post. I have nothing but respect for both, especially Wilt.
