CODE

Golden State has undergone a makeover in the past year.

First the Warriors replaced coach Mike Montgomery with GM Chris Mullin's former Warrior coach, Don Nelson.

They then made a significant midseason trade in which they sent Mike Dunleavy Jr, Troy Murphy, Ike Diogu and Keith McLeod to Indiana for Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Josh Powell.

Presently the Warriors are locked in a race with the Los Angeles Clippers for the 8 seed in the West.

DECISION MAKERS

OWNER: CHRIS COHAN
FACT SHEET
Bought Warriors for $119 million in 1995
Current franchise value: $267 million
Owner's net worth: $325 million (as of 2005)

Sources: Forbes.com, USAToday.com SCORECARD
Seasons: 12
Playoffs: 1
Division titles: 0
West titles: 0
NBA titles: 0

GM SCORECARD
By John Hollinger CHRIS MULLIN
Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations
Seasons: 3
Playoffs: 1
Division Titles: 0
Conference Titles: 0
NBA Titles: 0

BEST MOVE: Drafting Monta Ellis
The 40th overall pick in 2005 looks to be that rarest of rarities -- an impact second-rounder and a major steal. In his second pro season, Ellis is averaging 16.7 points per game to help Golden State's playoff push.

At 21 with explosive quickness, he figures to have plenty of growing left to do, too.

WORST MOVE: Signing Adonal Foyle, Mike Dunleavy and Derek Fisher
Take your pick on which of these three decisions was the worst, but Mullin's commitment of nearly $140 million to three secondary players was a major force behind the continuation of the Warriors' playoff drought, one that looks like it will finally end this year.

These moves also put the Warriors in a precarious salary-cap position for years to come, although he at least unloaded Fisher's deal on Utah.

ROSTER/SALARIES

WARRIORS TEAM ROSTER
Kelenna Azubuike
Pos: GF | Age: 23
Free Agent Matt Barnes
Pos: SF | Age: 27
Free Agent Andris Biedrins
Pos: FC | Age: 21
Left: 1 yr., $2.63M
Zarko Cabarkapa
Pos: F | Age: 25
Free Agent Baron Davis
Pos: PG | Age: 28
Left: 2 yrs., $34.25M Monta Ellis
Pos: G | Age: 21
Left: 1 yr., $771K
Adonal Foyle
Pos: C | Age: 32
Left: 3 yrs., $29.25M Al Harrington
Pos: FC | Age: 27
Left: 3 yrs., $27.67M Stephen Jackson
Pos: F | Age: 29
Left: 3 yrs., $21.42M
Sarunas Jasikevicius
Pos: PG | Age: 31
Left: 1 yr., $4M Patrick O'Bryant
Pos: C | Age: 20
Left: 3 yrs., $7.60M Mickael Pietrus
Pos: GF | Age: 25
Free Agent
Josh Powell
Pos: F | Age: 24
Free Agent Jason Richardson
Pos: GF | Age: 26
Left: 4 yrs., $51.11M
KEYLeft: Remaining contract terms Red: Player option Green: Team option

WARRIORS CAP/TAX SITUATION
Free agents (5): Kelenna Azubuike (r), Matt Barnes, Zarko Cabarkapa (r), Mickael Pietrus (r), Josh Powell (r)

Players under contract (8): Andris Biedrins, Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Adonal Foyle, Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Patrick O'Bryant, Jason Richardson

Total for players under contract: $56,397,331

Waived (1): Dajuan Wagner

Total for waived player: $72,066

First-round picks: Own

Team options: None

Player options: Sarunas Jasikevicius

Total for players with player options: $4,000,000

Limited salary protection: Monta Ellis

Total for player with limited salary protection: $771,610

Estimated NBA salary cap: $55 million

Maximum cap room for Golden State Warriors: None

Estimated luxury tax threshold:
$67 million (Warriors expected to exceed threshold)

Compiled by ESPN.com staff

TEAM STATUS REPORT

Golden State has accumulated an abundance of young talent, and is led by one of the league's best point guards, Baron Davis.

Andris Biedrins, in his third season, is having a breakout year, and appears to be the key interior component in Golden State for years to come.

Monta Ellis, drafted out of high school two years ago, has also made his mark this season -- though a combo-type in the backcourt, he appears to be heir apparent to Davis at the 1.

In addition to Biedrins and Ellis, both 21, the Warriors' roster includes youngsters Patrick O'Bryant, 20, and Mickael Pietrus, 25.

They combine with veterans Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington and Adonal Foyle and NBDL call-ups Kelenna Azubuike and Matt Barnes, who made the roster out of camp and has been a solid contributor this year.

There is a spread of talent both relating to age and position in Golden State, but with their impressive depth will come some difficult decisions in the near future.

Presently, Golden State sits approximately $1 million below the tax threshold, but in the coming years they will be operating from tight quarters if they are to retain their talent and remain below the tax.

This summer their cap number is slightly above $61 million, but that doesn't include either of their potential two first-round picks or cap holds. It also doesn't factor in the free agency of Pietrus, Azubuike or Barnes, all of whom have at some point this season been rotation players for Nelson.

THE FUTURE

MAJOR ISSUES FOR WARRIORS

Drought done? Warriors might finally make the playoffs

Most improved candidates: Ellis, Biedrins free agents in '08

Tough call: Better to keep vets or kids?

It will be difficult to keep this roster together and remain under the tax, and by appearances Golden State would be unlikely to participate in free agent activity this summer.

The following year their financial restrictions get further complicated: Starting with a cap number that will be difficult to keep under the tax this summer, 2008 brings about a reduction of only approximately $3 million of salary (not including draft pick or cap holds), while both Biedrins' and Ellis' contracts are due.

Golden State has put together a roster rich with young talent, but while the team figures out its pieces and gives its young players time to develop, the time is approaching for the Warriors to become expensive if they are to keep this group together.

In anticipation of these future financial issues, the Warriors traded Derek Fisher last summer to Utah for Devin Brown, Keith McLeod and Andre Owens, none of whom remain on the roster. With Fisher's contract going three seasons beyond this one, the deal was significant in alleviating cap pressure, and Golden State might look to execute even more deals of this nature if possible. There were reports this fall that buyout talks with Adonal Foyle were held, but nothing ever resulted; Foyle remains a likely subject if Golden State is to pursue this path.

The Warriors presently rank in the bottom third of defensive efficiency, and despite their talent, youth and depth, they figure to address that area as they continue forward. Biedrins has turned a lot of heads around the league this year: He is an exceptionally quick, aggressive big man who may one day rank amongst the league's elite interior defenders. But he is only 21 and despite his breakout season, he still is developing strength and savvy (and looking to improve on his 52 percent free-throw shooting).

To add length and quickness to their front line, the Warriors selected O'Bryant with the ninth pick in last year's draft, but regard him more as a future asset than immediate help. While he has shown glimpses of his potential, he has -- like most other rookies -- struggled to sustain a high level of play for any significant length of time. Foyle, the only veteran big on the roster, has been used sparingly this season.

While restricted financially, Golden State has an abundance of assets, in the form of both talented players and likely multiple draft picks in June. With a long list of assets that other teams will covet, the Warriors, though faced with financial restrictions, will have many options at their disposal this summer.

This was a piece down by Insider. Enjoy.
