It's possible Nelson is looking to re-negotiate the three-year deal worth a reported $18 million he signed last summer. "I don't want to talk about that," he said. "That will all get worked out. If it doesn't, I'll be very happy retired. If it does, I'll be very happy to coach."</div>Source What kind of crap is this? I'll be very disappointed in him if that's what it sounds like, I thought Nelson was a man of his word. This kind of greedy, juvenile crap is disgusting. Some 19-year-old kid wanting more money? OK, I don't like that, but I get it. But Nelson, a 60-year old adult? WTF? Would he have returned some of that money if the Warriors bombed? I doubt it.
Funny -- he said he didn't want to talk about it, and then basically followed by saying if they give him more money, he'll stay. If not, he'll retire. Weird.
Hey, it's his life. With all the high stress and long hours that head coaching requires, he's probably not going to live very long he thinks. So if he does this because of all the pressure from the organization, players, and fans, he better get lots of rewards for taking the risk. I dunno how else to explain it. Erick Dampier and whoever Dan Fegan represents is usually greedy, this is nothing. I think Don Nelson won't be able to coach forever, maybe we can keep him until he selects an heir apparent that can play a big man game as well.
Well his deal is 18 million dollars in 3 years, which is 6 million dollars per season. With all of the bonuses he got last season he maybe have earned about 8 million dollars (though don't quote me on this), how much money is he asking for? Does he want 10 million dollars to coach this season? I remember Chris Cohan getting in big trouble with taxes or something. If he ends up losing tons of money from that, it may mean that Cohan would want nothing to do with such a huge contract for a coach. This is kinda crazy - only in Warriorsland... Maybe Larry Brown comes back on the radar for the Warriors. I think this team is somewhat similar to his Detroit team that won the championship.

Baron - Billups Richardson - Hamilton Jackson - Prince Harrington - Rasheed Wallace Biedrins - Ben Wallace Ok maybe it is a little bit of a stretch, huh? Oh well... I am fine with Don Nelson as head coach too. It's not like this money is coming out of my pockets.

I think we knew the Warriors needed more size and some free throw shooting ability and a better motion game using midrange jumpers, but who can ask for anything more when we're barely an 8th seed ad we knocked off Dallas. That was pure drama since Nelson was going against his old team.
Agree with most of your points that we need a predecessor to Don Nelson. He's 67 years old, that's just too old. As far as his contract situation, I also agree that this is a bit fishy asking for more money AFTER you've signed a contract. This is very Nelson like behavior. I'd pay him what he wants anyways...he's definitley earned it, you need at least ONE more year of Nelly tweaking and molding the roster. I hear he wants his contract restructured so he gets payed more money in year 2 of his contract (this year) so he can retire the following year and not leave much money on the table. So...let's do it, and see where it takes us a year from now.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The health concerns Don Nelson said he had heading into this offseason no longer appear to be an issue. The coach of the Warriors recently said he's lost about 20 pounds since the end of Golden State's season and feels great. "Don is very conflicted. He is extremely excited about this team, but at the same time, he exhausted himself this last season like he has never done before." Before he fully commits to returning to the Warriors, however, Nelson has one more self-induced obstacle to overcome: his contract. Citing league sources, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday that Nelson, who turned 67 in May, is seeking a significant pay raise from his current three-year deal. Warriors president Robert Rowell and John O'Connor, Nelson's representative, met last week to discuss the matter. "All I will say is that Don is very conflicted," O'Connor told the Chronicle. "He is extremely excited about this team, but at the same time, he exhausted himself this last season like he has never done before." Nelson has two years and $6.2 million left on his contract and wants the deal's playoff-related bonuses to be guaranteed, which would bring his annual salary to about $6 million. Nelson's $3.1 million base salary ranks among the bottom half of the league, the Chronicle said. Warriors top executive Chris Mullin said last week he has no reason to believe Nelson won't be back next season. "I got Nellie to come back. I'm going to keep Nellie here," Mullin said. "Whatever those issues might be, they'll be resolved." Former Warriors coach Mike Montgomery, who was fired two years into his four-year contract, is still owed $2.5 million, the Chronicle reported.</div> http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2930398
