<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">You are forgiven if you don't see light at the end of the 76ers' tunnel. Their draft has potential, which may pay off in time but usually gets incumbent coaches fired. Nor are they in any position to go after meaningful free agents. Yet the first week of free agency - the negotiating period began last Sunday - hasn't gone all that badly from the Sixers' perspective. While many of the other Eastern Conference teams made moves that will make them marginally better next season, those deals will ultimately lead them to salary-cap prison. And that should leave the 76ers as one of the few teams east of the Mississippi with significant cap room next summer. (Might as well get in the lotus position and chant your mantra for the next 52 weeks: Kevin Garnett . . . Elton Brand . . . Shawn Marion . . . Jermaine O'Neal . . . Gilbert Arenas . . . </div> Link If you read the entire article, it gives you a perspective on how much money the Sixers will have next summer compared to the rest of the teams in the East. It also gives some speculation on how the Sixers can free up even more cap space to make a big splash next summer
It's not like we won't have the cap room to sign either Garnett, Brand, Marion, O'Neal, or Arenas if we don't trade Miller. Our payroll next year is going to be only $32 million (without re-signing Iguodala), so it does appear that we will be able to give the max contract to one of those players. It sounds greedy at this point to be trading Miller before the season as nobody knows how this group of young players is going to gel. Miller really seemed to have brought out the best in our players toward the end of last season, so why not just hang onto him for another two years while these young guys develop. If we dish out huge cash to a free agent in 2008, then it would be nice to have a $10 million contract coming off the books the following season (in Miller). The ideal situation would be that we keep Miller, land a high enough pick to grab somebody like OJ Mayo, while going out in free agency and landing either Garnett, Brand, or O'Neal. That would allow us to ease somebody like Mayo into the starting point guard role, while still fielding a team that could be a contender in the process. After that season is over, we would have Miller's contract coming off the books, and we would then have another $10 million in cap space. One final note referring to the article, it doesn't look promising that the Lakers will add another point guard to the roster, more specifically one with 2 years and $20 million remaining on his contract. They just drafted point guards in back-to-back seasons and, while I haven't been following the Lakers situation extensively, it seems like they're gearing more toward the future with Bynum still in a Lakers uniform. With Kwame's contract expiring, the $9 million has to look just as appetizing to them.

Being a Laker fan myself, I sure wouldn't mind seeing Andre Miller playing for us, but I'm not so sure about Daniels. He has a pretty big contract, and his performance has just been average. I can tell you that the Lakers aren't looking to rebuild. With Kobe Bryant and his trade demands, they are doing their best to gather pieces around the roster in order to help them contend. Kwame Brown's 9 million dollar contract is one of our best trading pieces
what if next summer the lakers trade Kobe to Phili for iggy and others. And than phili goes out and signs KG or something.

I would rather keep our draft pick (which will likely be high), Iguodala, and free agency money than trade it all away for Kobe (on a one year rental). BTW: I would do Miller for Kwame Brown in a heart beat, an extra 9 million to spend in free agency next year? I will take that.
Speculation, and execution, there is a huge diffference. Hopefully Billy Queen can make up for all these years of mediocrisy.
I say, if they finish last, good for them. OJ Mayo, Derrick Rose, C'mon, great draft. I think they should go after Derrick Rose, he will be so good.

Does anyone think that a big time player would be interested in playing in philly? It would be my dream for the sixers to get back to the finals.
