Holy sh*t! The pre-Mullin era is officially over, all the players we have now were acquired by Mully. Its been a drastic change since he took over. His first season we were running out Fish, J-Rich, Dunleavy, Murphy, Foyle, Uncle Cliffy, Speedy Claxton, Pietrus. Amazing improvement over the last few seasons.
Hmm... all these years hoping something like this would happen.... now, it's so late, it makes me wonder a bit... I mean, Foyle's contract would actually be an asset at the all-star break. A large expiring contract to trade to someone if need be. I hope the buyout was a good one. I'm happy he finally took his buyout, I just wish he would have done it last year instead of refusing for so long. It really would've helped the team a lot more. But, at least it's finally done. Foyle for president!!
I would have liked to have his large expiring contract as a great trading chip to pick up some high priced disgruntled all star... Oh well, if it helps our cap, GREAT!

So since Foyle was bought out does his whole salary comes of the books? or are the Warriors on the hook for all or some of his salary until two years?

If he had a team option for next year, it no longer counts, and the Warriors probably paid him less than the full amount for this year's salary. Besides financial reasons, this also opens up a spot on the 15 man roster.

He probably got 90% of those two guaranteed years but that money will be spread out over 3 years. Just speculation based off of other buyouts though. We'll save a few million a year since those two years will be spread paid off over 3 seasons. The roster spot is nice to have though. That means we won't lose Lasme if Pietrus accepts the QO. We still have a fairly crowded frontcourt though with Beans/Al/Barnes/Wright/Lasme/Croshere
Not only this is the end of pre-Mullin era (assuming Pietrus is gone), this is the end of Mullin Ch. 1, when he threw billions of $ on Richardson, Murphy, Fisher, Foyle, and Dunleavy. Yeah, it's basically a roster move, and we would be lucky to save 1 mil per year for next two years. I guess Cohan can throw that money to 'sign' Nelson...

His contract had a Team Option for the 2nd year, but we all know the team would never offer him the option. It would be nice if we can keep Lasme now. I'm really intrigued by his game...

Hoopshype says 07/08 and 08/09 are guaranteed while 09/10 is the team option year. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/golden_state.htm

I don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for correcting me. This makes much more sense financially. So that must mean they pay him for a portion of the last two years, to be spread over three?
<div class="quote_poster">AlleyOop Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">So that must mean they pay him for a portion of the last two years, to be spread over three?</div> Yes, thats my understanding of it. He had 18.7 mils guaranteed, we probably gave him 90% buyout since that seems to be the standard for buyouts in the last few years, that figure would be 16.8 mils. Divide that out over 3 years makes it an average of 5.6 million a year. Still a high figure to pay for nothing but it does save us 3.3 mils this coming season and 4.1 mils in 08/09. None of this is confirmed though, I'm just speculating.
The longest tenured warrior was just the epitome of sucktitude. His shotblocking and hustle were enough to offset other weaknesses in his game, but he was just really horrible to watch unless he was making a nice weakside defensive move. Uggg... I'm glad the last remnants of the PJ/Twardzick era are finally coming to a close. The guy was nice and all, but that doesn't win us games when he's signed to be a starting center. We're talking low basketball IQ, poor coordination, bad athleticism (probably due to the 20-30 lb weight gain), and clumsy basic offensive skill.

I still wonder if it would have been better to keep him until his expiring deal became a big asset, but whatever. We do need some roster space.
Now that I realize he had TWO guaranteed years left on the deal, this makes perfect sense. Foyle's contract wouldn't have been an asset until at least a year or a year and a half down the road. Until then, he'd just be an ass, disrupting warm-ups with half-court-shot competitions. Get him out of the way. He would have gotten the money anyway. At least this saves the team a few mils, and opens a spot on the roster. Most importantly, perhaps, is that it sends a message to this roster: the back up center spot is UP FOR GRABS! Hopefully it lights a fire under POB/Kosta/Wright/ etc...
Ok, so let me see if I got this all right.... We had basically 2 options 1. Keep Foyle for 1 year until his deal became an expiring contract and then use this as a nice trade chip for some team that wants a ton of salary cap space to make a run at a big time free agent. 2. Pay $5-6m/yr for 3 years for a player that is not even on the team but opens up a roster space Hmm, which would I have chosen... Option 1 sounds much better to me...
