QUOTE

    Dear Fans,

This journal will be one of my last entries as a San Francisco Giant. Yesterday, I was told by the Giants that they will not be bringing me back for the 2008 season. During the conversation with Peter McGowan I was told that my play this year far exceeded any expectations the Giants had, but that the organization decided this year would be my last season in San Francisco. Although I am disappointed, I've always said baseball is a business -- and I respect their decision. However, I am saddened and upset that I was not given an earlier opportunity to properly say goodbye to you, my fans, and celebrate with the city throughout the season as I truly believe this was not a last minute decision by the Giants, but one that was made some time ago. I don't have nor do I want any ill feelings towards the organization, I just wish I had known sooner so we had more time to say our goodbyes and celebrate the best 15 years of my life.

I consider the City of San Francisco and you, the fans, my family. Thank you for loving me and supporting me throughout all the highs and lows. I feel a deep connection with you as I have grown up with all of you since the days my dad first became a Giant. The Bay Area has loved my family and friends for so many years and I thank you for that. It is now a time for change, as many athletes have experienced. It is comforting to know that those who have come before me -- Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, to name a few -- have forever remained in the hearts of the fans, as I know I will too.

During my career as a Giant, so many people made significant impressions on my life. I'd like to thank all my past and current teammates. I've had the opportunity to play with some amazingly talented ballplayers who have treated me with respect, supported me and rooted for me throughout the years. Mike Murphy, our devoted Equipment Manager, used to baby-sit me as a little boy at Candlestick Park. There are no words to describe the love and respect I have for him. Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper are the two best broadcasters in the business. Their professionalism, integrity and love for the game, puts them in a league of their own. I thank them for their support and I'm honored to call them friends. It is also important to thank all the men and women behind the scenes at the stadium who come to work every day and make it possible for us all to enjoy a day at the ballpark. I love walking to clubhouse hearing their "hellos" every day.

I would have loved nothing more than to retire as a Giant in the place where I call home and have shared so many momentous moments with all of you, but there is more baseball in me and I plan on continuing my career. My quest for a World Series ring continues.

    Until next time,

    Barry Bonds

Thanks for the run Barry. Not sure if anyone gives him a shot next season, but Bonds would be able to produce as an everyday DH.

Who wouldn't want to sign the greatest baseball player of all time? The Wizards signed an old Jordan, why shouldn't someone sign an old Bonds?

    So he's not retiring right?

No, he wants to get 3,000 hits. Needs 65 more to get it.

Five people had something to say about Bonds before it went into the whole steroid discussion. I'm surprised it lasted that long. This is why I don't want the guy back. It doesn't matter what he does, what he doesn't do, what he says, or what he won't say, the only things people can't say about this guy are that he's a jerk, and that he took steroids. It gets so tiring.

Hes still among the league leaders in OPS (they say its the best indicator of a hitter), slugging, homeruns, etc. He'd be excellent as a DH with some legit hitters around him so that he couldn't be walked 70% of the time.

As a casual Giants fan I'd say this is probably a good move. I like Barry and what hes done for us but its time to commit to rebuilding, make some FA signings for multiple younger guys who are proven hitters. I'd have no poblem throwing Schierholtz and Davis into the fire as starting OFs and signing a few nice bats. Maybe we even make a run at A-Rod? Then maybe we're back in the Bonds situation with one great batter going to waste with crap talent around him.

I'm going to ignore the steroids discussion, because haters will always believe what they want to, despite what all the facts say. Bottom line is, he's a good player, was a great player, and fans are going to realize how lucky they were to see him play after he's gone. I was a Giants fan because of him, and I thank him for all the terrific baseball feats he's allowed us to witness. I hope he signs on with a top AL club like Detroit, where he can win a WS title to go along with his 3000 hits.

Yea steroids or not, to me he is one of the best players ever. The record speaks for itself. I wish the league would recognise him some more while he's still playing, rather than not giving a damn about him, because they're worried it'll damage the league in the eyes of the fans.

I don't have a problem w/ it being brought up. I have a problem with it being brought up when it has no relevance to the conversation. If someone were to say the Giants shouldn't bring him back b/c he might be indicted, then they would have a reason to bring it up. That hasn't been part of this conversation though, has it?

Paraphrasing what Dark Hero said is that Bonds only accomplished something b/c he took steroids, he's not as good as Hank Aaron, and Hank Aaron was a great player. Does any of that have to do w/ whether Bonds comes back to the Giants, or continues to play in the majors with another team? It's not new information. If you have any clue who Barry Bonds is, wouldn't you already know that?

Barry Bonds isn't better than Hank Aaron? He's not as good a natural homerun hitter but he is overall better. The guy has three MVPs in his skinny phase, almost 4. He was a five tool player.

I really wish I could've seen what the Barry Bonds career looks like if he had stayed at 190 pounds. In some ways, I think it might have been more impressive, because I think he may have had a chance at 600 HR/600 SB, which would never be matched by anyone in a million, billion years.

But, I didn't get to see that.

I agree that while Hank Aaron may have been classier, more polite, and more pure than Bonds, Bonds in his natural state was still the better player. Hank Aaron was the model of incredible consistency at a very high level. Barry Bonds was as close to a baseball playing god as you can get.

Pre-steroids homerun craziness, Bonds was an MVP and a five tool player. Never saw Aaron play, but I think Bonds was better.
