Wow, I turn my head for a day or two and all hell breaks loose!

[IMG] Anyway... 2-6. <Sigh> I've never seen a worse display of protecting the football in my 20 years of watching football. You know it's a problem, you talk about it in practice everyday, with the media, with the coaches... fix it already.

I will pose this question to all of you considering the average fan would just think the Steelers aren't a good football team. How many teams can turn the ball over and lose by 10 or less? Do you realize the lop-sidedness of giving the ball to your opponent that many times and not getting blown out?

The Steelers would have won every game had they not have lost the giveaway-takeaway game. Ah yes, would have, could have, should have. They didn't do that, hence the 2-6. But this is not a bad football team. Just a careless one. Too much ego, too much assuming, and you know where that goes........

    Thoughts?

I am with dolfandale. Bad football teams turn the ball over, thus if your team is turning it over in most games, your team is bad. Well, your offense. If your defense is letting Vick throw for 4 tds, they are either a) pop warner team (and a bad one) or [IMG] playing the worst night of thier lives (every player)

Either way, you are what your record says you are. They are as bad as the raiders, if not worse.

My thoughts are that this is an average team losing because of turnovers. If a team is not disciplined, that makes them a bad team (yes, the Vikings are a bad team too).

Every team in the league can say "if only". The Vikings could say "if only we had one more receiver", the Raiders could say "if only we had a QB", and every team that is losing could talk about protecting the football. Fact is, protecting the football is a crucial part of the game, and if you are not doing that as a team, then you are not playing good football.

I hate to be on the fence here, because to a degree I think you guys are right. 2-6 makes the Steelers a "bad" team. There is no real arguement. Not being able to score any offensive points on the Cardinals would qualify as something a "bad team" would do. Scoring 3 points on San Francisco's awful defense is something a "bad team" would do. Getting blown out by Houston (Jacksonville) is something a "bad team" would do. Turning the ball over 6 times is also something bad teams do.

My point was only that turning the ball over 3+ times usually means you get blown out. To lose by 10 and 11 and turn the ball over 5 and 6 times means you've got good things going on, but not knowing how to protect the ball is one facet that you are struggling with.

Not scoring points on soft defenses is a much harder problem to correct. Not sure exactly what my point is except that if the Steelers can protect the ball, they can beat any team in the NFL. Much easier task than correcting an entire offensive or defensive system. Why they can't seem to do it is beyond my comprehension.

I do know that I disagree with this statement. This is a very good team losing because of turnovers. How did the Superbowl Champs become "average" after having 19 of 22 starters return? The loss of Bettis? Chris Hope? Von Oelhoffen? I'm struggling to see that being reality.

Loss of Bettis is a big part of it. Big Ben not playing up to par is another part of it. You have also lost other starters (Randel El).

I don't think there is much separation between a good team and a bad team in this league - every team is just a couple of players away from making that switch. Look at Cincy, they went from a bad team to elite within a couple of years and just a few players. It happens all the time.

This year the Steelers lost a major part of their offense in Bettis AND a major leader on your team. Ben has been a shadow of his former self. In essence, your team has lost two of the most important players to your run last year.

Thats exactly what VF said. How are they doing so bad when the Seahawks are doing ebtter with the same situation? Its quiet sad...My guess those three players were the Steelers...

I guess a lot of it hinged on Ben. The rest of his team played consistant ball, but his play seemed to tip the balance in one way or another this year. I think Pittsburgh is a good team. I just think that they are suffering from inconsistancy at one position. Forget about the Bus and Randle El, they have been sufficiently replaced by the likes of Davenport and Santonio Holmes. Ben's play has either won games or costed them games.

Yesterday was the worst I've seen the offensive line play since the early 90's....

How do you give up 9 sacks? That's nothing I'm used to seeing, this isn't the Texans line of three years ago. This week had nothing to do with Ben, we just got beat.
