QUOTE

Philadelphia - It was a few months after he made his big league debut. Jeff Francis packed up his car, invited former teammate Justin Hampson along and headed back east to rest. Along the way, he stopped in St. Louis. He wanted to see his favorite player, Larry Walker, compete in the postseason with the St. Louis Cardinals.

"It was a amazing,'' Francis said. "That was the last time I was at a playoff game.''

Suffice to say, his first-time experience as a player trumped his day as a fan. Other than two mistakes that landed in the bleachers, Francis suffocated the Phillies' sluggers in the Rockies' 4-2 opening game victory in the National League division series. Too some, Francis is too earnest, too nice to step on a throat. And given his numbers against the Phillies this season -- 15.12 ERA -- it was assessment held firmly by the sellout crowd at Citizens Bank Park. In the playoffs, you can't play timid or scared. And Francis, in case you didn't realize, is neither.

He worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing only two solo home runs to Aaron Rowand and Pat Burrell on back-to-back shots in the fifth inning. The offense provided just enough against Cole Hamels and Flash Gordon. The Rockies tagged Hamels for three runs in the second on a Garrett Atkins' double and a bases-loaded walk to Troy Tulowitzki.

Matt Holliday completed the scoring with a home run in the eighth inning off Gordon. The Rockies' bullpen continued its dominance with LaTroy Hawkins, Brian Fuentes and Manny Corpas posting zeroes. The win the was the Rockies' 15th of their past 16 games, but their first playoff victory since Oct. 6, 1995, at Atlanta.

Matt "I never touched homeplate" Holliday went yard again for the Rockies. He's been the man all season for the Rockies, and should finish top two in the NL MVP race.

That was a very good game.

I thought the Phillies were gonna come back when they hit back-to-Back homeruns.

    Still glad Rockies won!
