MVP Drive?

Oct 12 - "What are the chances of me winning the MVP? Who knows, man? Do I care?" Baron Davis asked a reporter earlier this week. "It's all depending on the success of the team and our ability to win. When you win, everything else falls into line."

"I think that Dallas series kind of reminded him about what type of player he is, how good he is," Warriors forward Al Harrington said. "Now instead of him talking about making the All-Star team, or this that and the other, he's talking about being the MVP of the league."

"I definitely want to be the most valuable player in the league to my team," Davis said. "My mission is not to get the award, but to be that person for my team, and to be a factor each and every night that I step out onto the floor."-- Contra Costa Times

This is the Baron I wanted to see when he came here. He kind of deferred to Jrich because this was his team and did not want to be a disruption. Then the next season he said he wanted to make Jrich the highest scoring player in the league. That was not going to happen, but now he is talking more realistically. Baron is OUR MVP. Without him, this team is not good enough to make the playoffs. He definately could be the league MVP if we win 50+ games...

I think Golden State will struggle to make the playoffs this season, to be honest with you.If that happens, there's no way Baron wins MVP.

Baron has the possibility of getting MVP. Unfortunately, I doubt it'll actually happen. I'd expect Lebron as the MVP this season.

If he stays healthy and they are one of the top teams in the league, he'll get some consideration.

That being said, I don't think they'll be one of the top teams in the league...they'll get in the playoffs again I think, but I don't see them being one of the best.

He could be MVP if he stays healthy and if the Warriors have a high winning % but I don't think it's likely. Amd we're talking heavy competition in the West who have tremendous win records or individual scoring records. I can imagine Nash, Dirk, Duncan, and Kobe being typical front runners. T-mac could be another although he's burdeoned by playoff struggles. Then from the East you got Lebron James, KG, and Dwayne Wade. There could also be some surprise MVPs like if Yao stays healthy and has a standout year. One guy that might be considered, but doesn't win, is Deron Williams because he's already making his teammates better. I think if Chris Paul had a better team, he'd be another candidate, but his team isn't standout quite yet.

I think Baron Davis would have to have a stellar fg%, hit almost all the clutch shots this year, get tons of assists, and his teammates' stats all improve in order to win it. If we go from 8th seed last year to first in our division or at least top 5 in the entire nba or top 3 in the West, yeah I'd imagine Baron would have to get it considering the major improvement and lowered expectations of this club. But typically, it's the team with the best overall record in the entire nba and the super star player that gets it. We're not even sure if we'll reach the playoffs again due to health or consistency or whatever reason that most critics are saying again and again. I think we've gotten better though mainly because we've added guys who can create and knock stuff down inside and outside. Now, we just have to make sure we continue to lead the league in fastbreak points and get better at rebounding the ball defensively and grabbing our own misses to get another shot up.

He pretty much does have a better team, as of now. Peja's back, they got MoPete, and for now, everyone's healthy. They've added a couple good rookies, added Melvin Ely, and Armstrong has a year under his belt.

I'm not so sure about Paul for MVP, tho, but I'd expect that team to at least be a playoffs contender.

Whoa Nellie!!! Let's walk before we run.

Warriors sneaked into the playoffs and pulled off a monumental upset. Great.

Baron has not even been an All-Star with the Warriors yet, let alone have an injury-free year. I hope he's focused on just building on last year and playing better this year. I want to see a determined, dedicated full year out of Baron first before I start talking MVP.

MVP? There's a chance, but only if the Warriors become the Suns of 2006-2007 which is doable but will require magic.

Are you taking injuries into account? Because, if so, then they probably won't.

But this next season, no one's injured yet...and there's a full season of SJax+Harrington. Those 2 were big for the Warriors last year, and they'll actually start the year with the 2. If there's not too many injuries, I expect the Warriors to make the playoffs.

I'm assuming the hype on Baron is a continuation of last year's overzealousness when immediately after we beat Dallas, some fans were already talking championship which caused many sensible people's eyes to roll out of their own sockets.

Hey if Miami beat Dallas too and won a ring, we must rock at the same level, right? [IMG] It's probably the same issue with Baron being compared to Nash because of the style the Suns and Warriors both play and then because Nash won MVP, Baron has a good chance to win one as well.... Well... Baron's got to play at least 76 team lifting games for that to happen and he's got to show up at the end. Plus, it really helps if you have a guy like Shawn Marion or Amare Stoudamire who can rebound and finish. Well, we don't have much rebounding and guys on our team aren't really that great at finishing from the small forward and power forward positions. I think Baron would have to be so good, it makes his teammates all-stars and I'm not sure we have any other all-stars except for maybe the one-time only kind. Making your teammates into all-stars is my definition of what an MVP point guard should be at that position unless he decides to be a scoring guard like Allen Iverson. And talk about tough... Iverson took a lot of punishment at his size to get MVP and he got his team to the finals back in '01, I think. No way Baron's body can sustain the contact with his being out of shape or not ready or not being naturally durable.
