I've created a formula for determining overall NBA success, taking into account the regular season and postseason (with a greater weight on the postseason). Basically which fans would be most satisfied in the NBA based on their teams recent success...and which should be dissattisfied.
The formula is:
(2*#ofSeasons*Total Wins)/(41*#ofSeasons) + Playoff Berths + Playoff Series Victories + Championships
That is to determine the raw score. Then you divide the raw score by the ideal score to find the total success rating. Obviously needs some tweaking for the lockout shortened season if your including that.
Using the past 3 years as a sample.
1. San Antonio Spurs- .7594 2. Detroit Pistons- .6114 3. Miami Heat- .5854 4. Phoenix Suns- .5545 5. Dallas Mavericks- .5341 6. Cleveland Cavs- .4309 7. New Jersey Nets- .3813 8. Chicago Bulls- .3561 9. Washington Wizards- .3415 10. Denver Nuggets- .3244 11. Indiana Pacers- .2951 12. Utah Jazz- .2918 13. Houston Rockets- .2894 14. Sacramento Kings- .2732 15. LA Clippers- .2683 16. LA Lakers- .2634 17. Seattle Supersonics- .2585 18. Memphis Grizzlies- .2553 19. Golden St. Warriors- .2455 20. Philadelphia 76ers- .2220 21. Orlando Magic- .2154 22. Toronto Raptors- .2073 23. Boston Celtics- .1992 24. Milwaukee Bucks- .1927 25. Minnesota Timberwolves- .1772 26. New Orleans Hornets- .1545 27. New York Knicks- .1438 28. Portland Trailblazers- .1301 29. Charlotte Bobcats- .1252 30. Atlanta Hawks- .1122
Agree with those teams ranked like that...fans satisfied in that order over the past 3 years?
Just last year...not going to put the numerical values (to save time), but I'll put the team rankings.
1. San Antonio Spurs 2. Cleveland Cavs 3. Detroit Pistons 4. Utah Jazz 5. Phoenix Suns 6. Chicago Bulls 7. Dallas Mavericks 8. Golden St. Warriors 9. New Jersey Nets 10. Houston Rockets 11. Toronto Raptors 12. Denver Nuggets 13. Miami Heat 14. LA Lakers 15. Washington Wizards 16. Orlando Magic 17. LA Clippers 18. New Orleans Hornets 19. Indiana Pacers 20. Philadelphia 76ers 21. Charlotte Bobcats 22. New York Knicks 23. Sacramento Kings 24. Minnesota Timberwolves 25. Portland Trailblazers 26. Seattle Supersonics 27. Atlanta Hawks 28. Milwaukee Bucks 29. Boston Celtics 30. Memphis Grizzlies
Thoughts?

My formula goes like this.
(multiply factor of 1) x (championships won in past 3 seasons) x (1) + (2) - (2) + (√0)
My results tell me the standings look like this:
1) San Antonio Spurs - 2
2) Miami Heat - 1

Ok list, but the Cavs are kinda high. Yeah, they went to the finals one year, but before that, they didn't get that deep in the POs, and regular season wise they were no juggernaut either.

But honestly, rather than simply put more weight on the postseason than the regular season, you should make it slightly more, and then heavily weigh titles, in such a way that the Heat are above the Pistons. Because conf. finals, title and first round is still more impressive to me than finals, conf. finals and conf finals, regardless of regular season success(I know the Pistons had that 64 win season, but that's what makes Kid Chocolate's formula a little more real to me.
