"Sledge" is a great guy and was a fan favorite in Detroit. Detroit cut him loose because he's past his prime and had a hard time staying healthy the past few years.

Schlesinger is there to fill the role in Miami that Lorenzo Neal does in San Diego.

Not much left in the tank after 12 yrs as a battering ram in the Detroit. High character guy though. I expect he'll be a great Lions alumni man in the near future.

That's great....Dolphins pick up another player ready to retire...I wish they would start looking at some of the younger players.

On second thought "Sledge" just might work out pretty well in Cam Cameron's offense. If he can stay healthy ... who knows maybe a Pro Bowler? Here's a good article on Schlesinger. Better stock up on fase masks!

ALLEN PARK -- When it appeared certain that fullback Cory Schlesinger was going to sign with the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions assistant equipment manager John Brown made a quick call to Miami with some advice: Order more facemasks.

During his 12-year career with the Lions, Schlesinger broke more than 200 facemasks, an average of about one a game.

"There was a game in Chicago against (linebacker) Brian Urlacher where it had to be replaced at halftime. So I broke two in that game," said Schlesinger, who took great pride in crushing his opponents -- and his own faceguard -- with equal force.

And Schlesinger still takes a lot of satisfaction in his physical play, which is why he signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Dolphins. Miami's new head coach is Cam Cameron, the former offensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers who believes in a high-powered running attack.

"It's a fullback-friendly offense and it got (fullback) Lorenzo Neal to the Pro Bowl a couple of times (in San Diego). I'll carry the ball on short yardage and they'll throw the ball to me," said Schlesinger, who will be 35 when the season opens.

Neal will turn 37 at the end of this year but he hasn't slowed down. He has gone to three Pro Bowls, including the last two. It was Neal who helped open holes for running back LaDanainian Tomlinson, the NFL's Most Valuable Player.

"He's an older guy also," Schlesinger said about Neal. "(Cameron) has confidence in guys like me to go out there and do it. The last few years, the Pro Bowl (fullbacks) have been older. We can still do it."

Lions head coach Rod Marinelli still believed Schlesinger could do it, too, but he didn't fit in the offense of coordinator Mike Martz. Schlesinger knew his days were numbered when, after returning from a hamstring injury in early November, his playing time was greatly reduced.

"I know Martz likes more of a throwing game and my role would be cut down," Schlesinger said.

The Lions, who didn't offer a contract to Schlesinger in the off-season, are expected to replace him with a trio of players. Shawn Bryson is expected to handle third-down passing situations, T.J. Duckett will be the short-yardage back and tight end/fullback Sean McHugh will do most of the blocking.

"I would've really liked to finish my career in Detroit," Schlesinger said. "The best thing about playing here is the fans. I got to know the city and they knew who I was. I got a chance to go out and meet a lot of really nice people, I'll miss that the most."

But Schlesinger will still leave a little something of himself in Detroit. He still has some old busted facemasks left and, once he gets them mounted on individual plaques, he'll use them the same way he did the rest.

"They went to charity and they raised some pretty good money. It was a popular item. It's a pretty unique thing, not everybody has one," Schlesinger said.</div>

I read somewhere that said he'll be on the offense like Zach T is on D i.e. the leader by example, work habit, preparation, etc...
