Oct 29 - Bill Duffy, the agent for center Andris Biedrins, said Sunday there will be no contract extension for his client after negotiations with the Warriors on a long-term deal ended with "significant" differences on Biedrins current value.

Duffy was seeking a five-year deal worth substantially more than $50 million. The Warriors' offer was substantially less than $50 million. The gap was large enough that talks did not progress to a serious degree.

"Their opinion is that they can pay him that next summer," Duffy said. "That's true, but we think his value will increase."

Vice president Chris Mullin declined to comment Sunday, but his decision to let Biedrins test free agency is only the latest in string of money-conscious moves. -- San Francisco Chronicle

[*]"I think just philosophically, they're taking a different position than they have in the past," Duffy said. "And we're taking a very aggressive opinion of where Andris should be."

Biedrins is believed to have been seeking somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 million over five years. -- Contra Costa Times

Bill Duffy is trying to get the best deal for his client, but Biedrins at $12M per is laughable. Biedrins does not warrant franchise-player type money.

Too bad. No doubt that Biedrins will not be going anywhere but would have been nice to see a deal made, especially since Beans has height and is unselfish while playing great D and the only rebounder on the floor.

Well, after doing a quick glance over the teams with cap room next summer, I'm a bit more understanding of Mully's position. Alot of the teams with cap room have big stars to resign as well. (The cap for 2007-2008 is 55.6 million, and probably will be 56 million in 2008-2009). Without making any moves, the teams with more cap room than Golden State are Atlanta ($16 million), Chicago ($21 million), Minnesota ($17 million), Philly ($18 million), Utah ($10 million) and Charlotte ($26 million). Golden State will be about $9 million under the cap without resigning anyone. Alot of these teams have players with rookie contracts who are guaranteed big paydays: Atlanta has to resign Josh Smith and Josh Childress, Chicago has Gordon and Deng, Minnesota has Al Jefferson, Philly has to resign Andre Igoudala, and Charlotte has Emeka Okafor. Golden State of course will look to lock onto Ellis and Biedrins.

Now, 2008 could be a crazy year for free agency - but it's dependent on the players. Look at this list of players who have options to opt out of their contracts: Jermaine O'Neal, Elton Brand, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Ron Artest, and Gilbert Arenas. Granted, not all of them are going to opt out, but Marion, O'Neal, Artest and Arenas are very likely given their frustrations. Add that to the players above - that's a pretty big list.

Given all that information, the conclusion is that only Charlotte and Atlanta are able to offer Biedrins more than a $10 million starting contract. The other teams would have to start around $7 or $8 million, even with creative use of their Bird rights and waiting for their free agents to be resigned. I guess Mullin is taking the gamble that this, along with the possible free agent crowd, will eat up other team's cap space allowing him to get a better deal on Biedrins.

Edit: I meant Atlanta, not Utah, I must have been tired when I wrote this!

I think the careful thing is not to piss him off because if he signs for only one year next summer, he becomes an unrestricted free agent the next year and the W's only retain the "Bird" rights (able to resign at any price). I'm confident that Mully won't go that far in the negotiations.

Can't say I like this, because I think there is a good chance that Biedrins will demand more $ in next season than this season. But, I can see the reason behind it. Yeah, next year will be wide open for Mullin, and be a crucial year for rebuilding this team. Next year, we will only have Davis (who will most likely stay with his current contract), Harrington, Jackson, Wright, Belinelli, Kosta and Foyle's remaining contract. We can either stay with our young players or cash in players for something completely different. Although, I don't expect any big change in this year, because we are not equipped with number of big and expiring salaries anymore, such as Cabbage or Foyle...

How about the Warriors trade exception from the JRich trade? When does it expire and do you see them making use of it this year?

A trade exception lasts for a year, so it'll expire early next summer near the draft, before serious free agent signings come around. They're really close to luxury tax territory, so I don't think they'll use it unless they land some huge player.

The Warriors will regret this one day.

If I were his agent, I wouldn't even advise him to sign the 5/$50M extension.

Yeah, like Zhone mentioned, we are pretty close to luxury tax, so unless we get something we cannot refuse, I don't see us using that exception. And, to make things worse, we cannot combine that exception to receive a bigger contract. It's nice to have, and we will keep our option open, but more than likely, we won't use it...

He shouldn't get more than that, but how the market is dictated right now he most likely will. Biedrins is still worth more than Kaman.

Well, I can understand why we didn't extend Biedrins. But, I have a hard time understanding why we didn't exercise POB's 3rd year, essentially giving up on POB after a year. And, it's not like we expected POB to become an instant contributor. We all knew that he will be at least 3 years project, and I thought he made a nice progress during this offseason. I guess Mullin really want to maximize this offseason...

Maybe Mullin wants enough space to go after free agents... who knows? If we're talking Emeka Okafor over Biedrins, I'd definitely do that in a heartbeat.

I doubt Charlotte would let him go though.
