<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The New York Mets have agreed to a trade for two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, giving up four prospects to acquire the left-handed ace of the Minnesota Twins, according to two high-ranking Twins officials with knowledge of the talks and a person close to Santana. The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension. The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.</div> Sad to see guys like Gomez and Humber go, but man, I can't stop smiling right now. Can someone tell me if this is any good for the Twins please? Other than Gomez, I heven't heard of any of these guys. This is very saddening but I knew it was coming. At least he didn't go to Boston (Ortiz, KG, Moss, all originated from Minnesota franchises)

Gomez will be a good one. Only reason I'm not completely bummed about losing him is that we still have Fernando Martinez.
The Mets got a steal. Thing is that the rumors said they won't offer him a contract longer then 4 years right? That is pretty far apart. Considering the deal was done at this price (in terms of prospects), the Mets better sign him. -Petey

This strategy has rarely worked for them recently. Further, it will be interesting to see if Johan can make the transition to the NL style. I was hoping the Red Sox would wise up and let one of the NYC teams land this prize.
As a Yankee fan, I'm glad he went to the NL and not Boston, and that we didn't give up Phillip Hughes.

Freaking. God. This made my day.
We hang on to Ellsbury (i could give two squirts of piss about Lester), and Santana isn't a Yankee. Good stuff, good stuff.

They got the number 1 pitcher in the American League (the better league) or at least consistently top 5 pitchers in baseball for, compared to what the Red Sox and the Yankees offered in December, not much. We didn't give up our top prospect who is also an outfielder, instead we gave up Carlos Gomez. Gomez I do really like but obviously you have to give up someone to get Santana, hes not even close right now to Ellsbury or the value of Hughes or Lester. Then we gave up Humber who once had a really high ceiling but after his Tommy John surgury cant do much anymore... hes 25 and not doing well in the minors. The other two players are minor league prospects that sure have decently high ceilings but you never know with 18 year old players, they could be good or they could never reach the majors. The fact is Santana is 28 going on 29, hes going to a pitchers park with a very potent offense, good defense and a decent bullpen. It gives the Mets a pretty awesome rotation if Pedro can pitch like he did at the end of last year, since now Maine who was last years #1 starter is now the 3. He got 15 wins last year. This is a big value deal that the Mets definately needed to do because the pitching staff that they were gonna put out this year before the trade was not the best. They also did not give up Fernando Martinez who is a 19 year old power hitting OF and they didn't give up Jose Reyes who the Twins initially wanted. To me this is a win win situation for the Mets I think they won big. And I can't imagine that Braves fans are happy considering now they will probably have to shoot for the wildcard.

In case, you had not noticed the Braves have been retooling for the last 2 yrs. So, I have no problem admitting they are not the best team in the NL I was okay but mixed about the Teixiera trade. It was an upgrade but I hate giving up prospects and Thorman was not given enough time IMO. Further, I honestly don't think they should have traded LaRoche. The keys will be; 1) Can Mark Kotsay stay healthy and be a stop gap in CF until Jordan Schafer is ready to replace Andruw Jones? A platoon of Kotsay & the player the got from the Astros might work. The advantage to that is Francouer stays in RF. 2) The pitcher (Jurgen ??) they got as part of the package from the Tigers for Edgar as well as the utility INF (Infante) from the Cubs will give them flexibility ATL has not had in sometime. As for the Braves aiming for just the wildcard, <u>Maybe thats what the mess should have considered as their goal last year. </u> I wonder if they got the case of Formula 44 I sent them. I don't see the Braves lighting the world on fire this year but they have upgraded the bench & bullpen the last 2 offseasons in addition to getting Teixeira.
