I was thinking of Philly too, but there are worse cities (fan base wise), rosters, and financial situations than Philly.
The Lakers would easily be on the top of my list. Partly because of the problems other people have mentioned with trying to win with Kobe as your one star, but mostly because I'm a Blazers fan and I couldn't stand to work for the Lakers.<DIV><BR class="khtml-block-placeholder"></DIV><DIV>The other one for me, that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet, is the Suns. Sure, they're exciting and always a contender, but how deflating must it be for the GM to do everything they can to get a championship and have your owner insist on selling draft picks and players just to save money?</DIV><DIV><BR class="khtml-block-placeholder"></DIV><DIV>I'm sure I can think of more, but those two are well above the other teams at the moment.</DIV>
Right now, I would definetly say that the worst GM job would be the Pacers. Nobody wants to play there. I mean seriously, when is the last time that you have heard a high caliber NBA player say that they are interested in going to Indiana?
I have to add Atlanta to my list, I just don't know what is going on with their ownership. I would probably have to add Portland as well. It would seem like a dream job for a Blazer fan like me, and I loved a league I helped run on another site that was something like a fantasy league, but starting from the actual teams, and I would love to do that here as well, but I don't think I would like the real job for two reasons. First, I like Kevin Pritchard and wouldn't want to take his job from him. Second, it would be too close to working for Microsoft for me.
Atlanta is easily the worst possible GM job in the league right now. You're essentially handcuffed from making any moves at all, because of the crazy legal disputes over who owns the team. Any roster in the league is salvagable, but Atlanta is the only franchise that won't give you the power to actually fix anything.
My first thought was the Knicks. Currently they're a mess, and everything you do is going to get torn apart by the media/fans.
Any team except the Celtics. No other reason except that I'm old enough to remember the battles of the seventies during the original "Show Time" era. Always hated the Celtics, and am probably too old to be rehabilitated.
I am going to go with the Pacers right now. Aside from Danny Granger, there are few bright spots on that team right now.Jermaine O'neal is a decent player, but he is injury prone, as well as takes very bad shots in his days. Tinsley is a good distrubutor, but aside from that he does nothing great, and is always good for being hurt. He is inconsistent at best with how he plays, and there are some character issues there also if i am not mistaken. They just do not seem to have anything that sets them up for a bright future, or allows them to win now. A possible number one pick this upcoming season might make them a little better, but they still have a long way to go.
I remembered about this thread and I think I need to add Chicago to my list. To me, what makes a bad GM job is bad owners who won't allow you to go out and get the players you need to win, and pay them if you do get them. Has Donald Sterling proven that he will pay for talent yet? If not, add the Clippers as well.
Joe D is doing such a wonderfull job in Detroit, the next guy might be good, but he wont be no Joe Dumars.

If I'm a GM, the state of the roster is less important than the type of ownership and front office I'd be dealing with. In that respect, the Knicks, Hawks, Clippers, Suns, Bobcats, Bulls, and Sonics are all positions I'd be hesitant about. Those ownership groups are either cheap, intrusive, or just plain incompetent/unstable.
Haha I read through the first page of this thread and Dre owned cpawfan so bad. The Heat are fine as long as they have Wade!
The Clippers gig was the first one I thought of. They don't have a lot on that team aside from Brand (who can opt out). They've been bad forever and it doesn't seem to be getting a whole lot better.

Come on Swish, I realize you have a hatred for the NBA team in Florida that actually managed to win an NBA title with Shaq, but this thread is about being a GM and the Heat job with Wade and the contract situation they have is not a difficult job.
This is like asking "Which is the worst Playmate to sleep with?" or "What Megabucks lottery would you like to avoid winning?". There is no worst. They all completely rule.

In this case, it's actually impossible to make the Knicks worse. Even if you just sat at your desk sleeping and playing GTA for two years, contracts would run out and the situation would improve.
