Surgery shelves Bears top pick Williams Thursday, August 7, 2008 08:42 PM

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Tackle Chris Williams, the Chicago Bears' first-round pick this year out of Vanderbilt, had surgery to repair a herniated disk and will be out indefinitely, the team announced Thursday.

The 6-6, 312-pound Williams, who was selected 14th overall, will not be placed on injured reserve and will remain eligible for the 53-man roster.

Williams has been sidelined since the second practice of training camp on July 24.

Nine-year veteran John St. Clair has been working at left tackle and started Thursday's preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

I was up there this weekend and folks on the radio were mentioning Stan Thomas. Not a good thing!
