    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Mid-Day Report: The Thunder Rolls

By: Jason Fleming Last Updated: 8/7/08 11:53 AM ET | 2041 times read

It's Gotta Be Thunder: When the NBA announced the schedule yesterday they let it slip that OKC will be named the Thunder. As the Oklahoman newspaper points out, all team web pages are in the format of www.nba.com/teamname and all team names on a schedule link to the other teams.

Other team's schedules pointed to www.nba.com/thunder - seems like that's all you need. Why? Because the league wouldn't go through all the work to create those links (even if they are create dynamically) only to have to change them again. As some of you may have noticed, we haven't yet made the change here on HOOPSWORLD because we are waiting for confirmation of the mascot – likely the Thunder, but not officially yet – and we only want to make the change once.

"There's lots of considerations from legal and licensing down to strategic marketing," OKC owner Clay Bennett said last week. "But we'll announce the name soon."

    But not yet.

"We're not going to comment on the name until we're ready to announce something," OKC team spokesman Dan Mahoney said yesterday.

Thunder is getting more and more likely to be the safe bet, and it's a solid choice. It evokes power and surprise, like one of Kevin Durant's dunks in traffic, and can be very ominous. One thing is for sure, the Ford Center better have an excellent speaker system, because you can bet a lot of bass is going to be pounding through those speakers when the thunder rolls. (Oh my, did I just drop a Garth Brooks song reference? Oops…)

And when you think about it, is that too much different from a Sonic Boom you may have heard at KeyArena? I wonder if THAT bit of symbolism was intentional.</div>

Would be interesting to see the logo and jersey. I think Thunder was the best choice out of the options

OMG Durant is the best Thunder ever!

How gay does that sound? Pretty gay.

A plural name would've been better. How does one be a "thunder"?

I'd rather be an Outlaw, or a Baron, or a Thunderbird (2/3 of those can be an actual NBA player, sweet).

I don't like the name either but the plural thing shouldn't be anything new.

Well, then you could apply the same reasoning to Jazz, Magic, and Heat.

    It wouldn't be the Thunders.

    It would be the Thunder.

Same as, I like the Jazz.
    I like the Heat.
    I like the Magic.

That's cause he's a Net. Make it singular

Or, you can go with the original name.

"Julius Erving is the greatest American of all time"

    USA USA USA

Thunder is alright, Barons would have sucked... it's from the 1800's
Thundercats, Thunderbirds = bad 80's cartoon
Outlaws = just as good/bad as Thunder.

Look at 80% of the team names.. they all kinda suck, you're just used to them.
Look at the name The Knicks (re: Knickerbockers?? named after a style of pants?!?!) for example.

True, so true...alot of the team names do kinda suck, but does that mean we have to add more. I don't wanna wait for years to pass before I'm "used" to another bad team name...lol

My question is, did the OKC powers that be actually let their city come up with ideas for a team name or came up with these Suck-ass names themselves and let the people vote on it? Then it just comes down to people picking the lesser of the evils....lol....ie; I'll pick this name cuz it doesn't suck as bad as the others....lol

Meh the name Raptors for the Toronto franchise was widely disliked when it came out too.

What name would ppl on here have used? Not just the ones listed.. let's see some good team names!
