So I've had this album for a few days now (even though it's not out until 9/30), and I must say, I'm VERY impressed with it. I'd venture to say it's Trivium's best effort so far out of their four discs. And considering how highly I rate both Ascendancy and The Crusade, that's saying something. So, I am, to say the least, pumped to see this guys in just over a week with All That Remains and 36 Crazyfists.

I have it on my Fuze and have been playing the shit out of it non-stop. Though I tend to keep cycling between the same four songs (Into the Mouth of Hell, Throes of Perdition, Like Callisto To A Star In Heaven, Shogun) that are just epic IMO. Excellent guitar work, particularly solos, on this album. I'd say Shogun's my favorite track, its long as fuck but around the 7 minute mark when it starts to go from melodic to insane, its one of the biggest music rushes I've gotten. A+++ for this disc.

This is actually the first Trivium album I've listened to. Outside of 'We Are the Fire' these are the first Trivium songs I've ever heard.

You fail at life in every facet imaginable.

Metallica's a bunch of fuckheads. They don't have it anymore, to me its debatable they ever did. THAT's a rip-off.

First off...dont even try to talk to me about metal as if you know whats going on. Secondly, I thought it goes without saying that when I reference Metallica anything after the Black album doesnt count as real Metallica. Metallica is lame now but give them the respect they deserve for everything they have done. Trivium is the biggest ripoff I have ever heard in the realm of metal (only talking about"big name bands").

I live metal Jacoby. Just because you werent born when Metallica was doing their biggest albums doesnt mean that Trivium isnt a complete ripoff of them. :tsktsk:

How can Trivium be a rip-off of Metallica if Trivium is better? Well actually I should say... Shogun is a far better effort than anything Metallica's put together, before, after, or on the Black album (because I haven't heard a single song from Ascendancy yet). I heard a bunch of old Metallica songs. They range from mediocre to awful. The more melodic ones are mediocre. Their attempts at thrashing, heavy metal music failed miserably. Maybe they would have been better off if that Hetfield guy was never their lead singer, he kills a lot of their stuff.

I've heard it. That counts just the same, doesn't it? I just heard it at a time when there was far better music floating around that was more worthy of replay than Ride the Lightning, the Black album, and whatever else they came up with.

lol...I feel bad for you. So being one of the co founders of metal doesnt count as anything?

    Black Sabbath
    Metallica
    Slayer
    Pantera

If you dont like those 4 bands then you just dont know metal.

Do you like those bands? (besides metallica, smh)

I like Slayer to a degree, Black Sabbath is okay, not great but not bad by any means. I've never heard Pantera.

Holy shit man....ok Im gonna try and calm down here because I cant believe your answer.

Please, for your own good listen to Pantera. Im telling you this to help you. My favorite metal band ever...Get "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Far Beyond Driven" for the first two albums you get of theirs.

Not bad, I'll rank them #2 behind Slayer on that list.

Give them a real chance. Go research their "best hits" and start there. You will thank me

    Where to start...

So I'll agree, The Crusade was a lot like Metallica's 80's stuff. It's pretty blatant too, but I didn't care. It was a DAMN good album in my book, so I could give a shit less whether or not they ripped off a band or not. However, take a listen to Ascendancy, Ember to Inferno, or Shogun. NONE of them sound anything like Metallica, at all. So to call them a Metallica rip-off is completely uneducated and you clearly haven't actually listened to them.

A couple things though - Matt Heafy is a far better vocalist than James has ever been, and this is coming from a person who LOVES Metallica and considers them to be my favorite band of all time. Beyond that, Matt and Corey are a far better guitar duo than James and Kirk. I love Kirk and James, don't get me wrong, but just listen to The Crusade and try and argue otherwise. The fretwork on that album is amazing and those two feed off each other brilliantly.

Beyond that, Lars is nothing compared to Travis Smith on the drums. Lars was a fantastic drummer back in the 80's but has since lost a step or two along the way.

Another thing, and I hate to break this to you, but Death Magnetic is a fucking brilliant album. It's very much a mixture of the old and newer school Metallica, and it's amazing. It's hands down their best album since Justice, and I would actually rank it as high as their fourth best album behind Puppets, Ride and Justice.

Hmmm....I really don't know what else to say. And by the way, don't even get me started on metal. I love it. Pantera, Slipknot, Trivium, Metallica, Megadeth, Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc. I listen to all sorts of it.

Also, please, PLEASE tell me that the Sabbath you speak of is WITH Ozzy...so, ya know, '70-'78. If you actually prefer anything after that....wow. Yuck.

But, in suffice, give Trivium a chance. Just because one album does ripoff Metallica doesn't mean it all does. Like I said, their other three albums sound NOTHING like Metallica, at all. And really, I think they released The Crusade just to show off their musical talents and to show the world they CAN make something other then the screaming, thrash metal they were making on Ascendancy and Ember to Inferno.

And by the way, Jacoby, do yourself a favor and pick up their other three albums. All are good, with Ascendancy being my favorite of their other three.

Last thing, in regards to Shogun, my favs at the moment are Shogun, Kiriuste Gomen, Into..., and Down From the Sky. All in all though, it's all damn good. I love it, and I'm PUMPED to be seeing them in a week and change.

Also, as for Pantera, I'd agree - go buy their Greatest Hits. Five Minutes Alone, Walk, Cowboys From Hell, Planet Caravan (cover of a Sabbath song, but damn good), Cemetary Gates, This Love, etc. All of 'em are brilliant. It's unfortunate that they broke up...and even more unfortunate to see Dimebag go the way he did and to see Phil front a HORRIFIC band in Down. Superjoint Ritual isn't much to speak of either....

I'm assuming he's laughing because he thinks all those bands are garbage. That's just my hunch.

Well if that is what he meant then I feel sorry for him. Those bands are/were the backbone of metal

Good post, you made some good points.

About Trivium, I wont lie and say I heard the majority of their stuff. Ive heard the songs they play on the satellite radio stations, and their live show I saw. Yes they play well for sure, I just cant get past the fact that is so heavily influenced by Metallica. Just over the top IMO.

Im yet to hear the new Metallica album...Ive only heard two songs from it.

Of course I was talking about Sabbath w/Ozzy
