    GROUP A

    Air Avellino 69 - Olympiacos 76

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=1

QUOTES: "It was a tough debut, like I expected. It was a close game until the end and I had to use all my attitude to stay in the match. It's a great experience for me, I think I have a lot of things to learn from players like Papaloukas and Vujcic. They will help me to grow up as a player and as a man." - Josh Childress, Olympiacos

"We did our best, playing a great first quarter and a good first half. After the intermission we suffered from their athletic and physical power, having big problems to control Childress when he drove to the rim and also under the boards, but I think we must be happy with our Euroleague debut." - Travis Best, Air Avellino

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Josh Childress, Olympiacos (14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks in 25 minutes)
-Zoran Erceg, Olympiacos (11 points, 6 rebounds in 18 minutes)
-Chris Warren, Air Avellino (18 points, 5 rebounds in 37 minutes)
-Travis Best, Air Avellino (14 points, 5 assists, 3 steals in 32 minutes)

    Unicaja Malaga 84 - Le Mans 79

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=2

QUOTES: "Everyone takes from granted that we will beat like Le Mans, which means that our mentality may be that everything will be easier and the win will come without a lot of effort. This is when you have to be even more focused and give over 90% in a game like this, not go down to 50%. Even with that, beating a well-organized team is always a good result. The players' rotation does not depend on the game being under control or not, but on tactic issues or seeing that a player is not giving its maximum so that he can give it again. I don't want anyone to get me wrong, though, because my players put a good effort out there tonight. We lacked concentration at times and we have to limit that if we want to incrase our playing level. I liked Le Mans tonight, especially its strong frontcourt." - Aito Garcia Reneses, Unicaja Head Coach

"It is a shame to lose a game like this. We were a bit nervous in the first half but were physically strong all game long. We have good scorers who missed key shots in critical moments. Unicaja got an important lead with a late three-pointer by Carlos Cabezas that allowed them to seal the outcome. We are happy with the good work we did, even when we are a bit sad with the final score. Now we must think about our home game against Cibona and try to beat Unicaja when we face them again." - John-David Jackson, Le Mans Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-David Bluthental, Unicaja (17 points in 33 minutes)
-Brian Chase, Unicaja (15 points in 29 minutes)
-Dewarick Spencer, Unicaja (14 points, 4 rebounds in 37 minutes)
-Boniface Ndong, Le Mans (14 points, 6 rebounds in 17 minutes)
-Marcus Haislip, Le Mans (13 points ,7 rebounds in 27 minutes)
-Robert Archibald, Le Mans (11 points, 6 rebounds in 18 minutes)
-Jiri Welsch, Le Mans (10 points in 18 minutes)

    Cibona Zagreb 81 - Maccabi "Electra" Tel-Aviv 79

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=3

QUOTES: "This victory is of a great importance to us because it will be very hard to beat the top European teams in our group – Olympiacos, Unicaja and Maccabi. This is a good injection of self-confidence, and it can only give us wings to keep working hard. The key was our willingness to play defense, which is not easy against the team like Maccabi that plays real aggressive on offense. In addition, we had several players who played good games tonight, we had Kus and Marshall and Prkacin. It was a blue-collar victory against the team that plays with ease. Calloway played a really good defense against Arroyo." - Velimir Perasovic, Cibona Head Coach

Now we must think about our home game against Cibona and try to beat Unicaja when we face them again." - Efi Birenboim, Maccabi Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Davor Kus, Cibona (23 points in 33 minutes)
-Rawle Marshall, Cibona (20 points, 3 steals in 32 minutes)
-Nikola Prkacin, Cibona (14 points, 4 rebounds in 22 minutes)
-D'or Fischer, Maccabi (26 points, 7 rebounds in 24 minutes)
-Lior Eliyahu, Maccabi (14 points, 5 rebounds in 25 minutes)
-Carlos Arroyo, Maccabi (10 points in 32 minutes)

    GROUP B

SLUC Nancy 54 - Regal FC Barcelona 82

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=4

QUOTES: "Our first Euroleague game was a very difficult game. Barcelona was superior in all the game's fields. We were not able to raise our defensive level and in front of a big team like Barcelona with a lot of talented players, it's fatal. Barcelona simply brought our shortcomings out. I am a little displeased with the ending. We let go about 10 points." - Jean-Luc Monschau, Nancy Head Coach

"I'm happy. We played a complete game with a lot of intensity. We prevented them from playing their game and when they reduced the score in the second quarter thanks to their enthusiasm and a lack of intensity from us, we didn't panic. We played smarter in the second half, finding again our defensive intensity and scoring big shots. Nancy only scored 19 points in the second half. That's promising for the next game." - Xavier Pascual, Barcelona Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Ersan Ilyasova, Barcelona (18 points, 12 rebounds in 23 minutes)
-Fran Vasquez, Barcelona (12 points, 3 blocks in 19 minutes)
-Lamayne Wilson, Nancy (19 points in 27 minutes)
-Victor Samnick, Nancy (11 points, 4 rebounds in 24 minutes)

    Panathinaikos 78 - Zalgiris 51

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=5

QUOTES: “It’s very important that we won our first Euroleague game. I am satisfied with the way we entered the game. Until the 14th minute we rarely lost our composure and we were very effective. So, all in all, the only time we faced some difficulties was in the final minutes of the first half, when we let them grab a lot of offensive rebounds and we failed to execute on half-court sets. On the contrary, in the second half -especially in the 3rd period- we played great against their zone defense. Overall, we might have lost the battle of rebounds, but our game today was very aggressive. We forced them to commit 22 turnovers, whereas Zalgiris stole the ball only 5 times. Congratulations to my players and of course to the fans who created, as always, such a great atmosphere.” - Zelimir Obradovic, Panathinaikos Head Coach

“First of all I want to congratulate Panathinaikos. But I think that today it was a bit easier for them than it was last season because we are not ready to play. We should keep our heads up and try to come out of this difficult situation. We have to try to do our best and play better. Sometimes in basketball statistics do not say the truth. Today, we grabbed 19 rebounds more than Panathinaikos did, but we lost by a margin of 27 points. Regarding the financial problems that our club is facing, my task is to do my job. It’s not easy to change things in such a short period of time, however I hope and I trust that we’ll find a way to play better and win games. Panathinaikos is once again one of the strongest teams in Europe. When you see which players are coming off the bench…Every coach would like to have them. Maybe we cannot do it at the moment, but Panathinaikos is one of the teams that we’ll try to beat so as to qualify to the Top 16." - Gintaras Krapikas, Zalgiris Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Dimitris Diamantidis, Panathinaikos (15 points in 26 minutes)
-Nikola Pekovic, Panathinaikos (14 points in 14 minutes)
-Antonis Fotsis, Panathinaikos (10 points, 6 rebounds in 23 minutes)
-Michale Batiste, Panathinaikos (10 points, 4 rebounds in 22 minutes)
-Loren Woods, Zalgiris (17 points, 16 rebounds in 34 minutes)
-Dainius Salenga, Zalgiris (11 points, 4 rebounds in 36 minutes)

    Montepaschi Siena 80 - Asseco Prokom 71

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=6

QUOTES: "I am happy. I had already said that this would be a very hard game with great athletic level. We had the need to stop their offense with big potential, but our team was ready to play a high level game. We have played a good match but I am a little displeased with the ending n which we received a couple of threes that cut the advantage at the ending. The game in Poland will be really tough for us." - Simone Pianigiani, Montepaschi Head Coach
"I am happy about the performance of my team, but we have committed important mistakes in crucial moments. We are not very experienced as the only guy with good experience is Pat Burke, who has joined the team late and is not at his best level yet. Our regrouping is the most difficult thing. We are a good team but we have to improve a lot to try to get to the Top 16. It will be tough, but in sports anything can happen." - Tomas Pacesas, Prokom Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Henry Domercant, Montepaschi (15 points in 25 minutes)
-Ksistof Lavrinovic, Montepaschi (13 points, 13 rebounds in 25 minutes)
-Rimantas Kaukenas, Montepaschi (13 points in 29 minutes)
-Terrell McIntyre, Montepaschi (11 points, 7 assists in 28 minutes)
-David Logan, Prokom (25 points, 4 assists in 40 minutes)
-Ronnie Burrell, Prokom (15 points, 7 rebounds in 25 minutes)

    Tau Ceramica 80 - Fenerbahce Ulker 70

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=7

QUOTES: "Good evening. Playing the first game in a new competition is always tough, we know it. Fenerbahce Ulker is a very good team, despite having missed Gordan Giricek with a last-minute injury. It's still a talented team, very versatile at power forward. Apart from the beginning of the game, when we did not come out on defense and put pressure on the ball. Also, attacking their open zone, we were too static, not moving the ball well. Other than that, of course there are things to improve, but considering that this is our first Euroleague game of the season, I am happy. We have to work on attacking zone defenses or everyone will use it against us. We were too static but when we managed to get the ball inside, we scored. We missed outside shots and when you miss and try to attack a zone with more outside shots, it leads to insecurity. We have room for improvement and we'll find answers. If everything goes as expected, Tiago Splitter will play this weekend but Sergi Vidal did not practice, so I don't know. Pablo Prigioni played in pain tonight. We knew it would be a difficult game for us." - Dusko Ivanovic, Tau Head Coach

"I think it has been a good game to start the Euroleague season. Tau Ceramica deserved to win the game, but I think we have been very close to win it, too. At some point we werr only trailing by 5 points but the outcome was what it was and we cannot change it. Both players were without important players. Tau has missed Tiago Splitter and Sergi Vidal. Meanwhile, we were without four key players, who can be in our starting five, like Omer Onan, Gordan Giricek, Semih Erden and Omer Asik, who will not be back until the second part of the season. After all, with all this absences we managed to stay in the game and have our chances to win it in the final minutes. Giricek had some injury problems in the last 2-3 days and could not play tonight." - Bogdan Tanjevic, Fenerbahce Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Igor Rakocevic, Tau (24 points in 34 minutes)
-Will McDonald, Tau (18 points, 8 rebounds in 37 minutes)
-Pete Mickeal, Tau (15 points, 8 rebounds in 35 minutes)
-Devin Smith, Fenerbache (13 points, 9 rebounds in 28 minutes)
-Rasim Basak, Fenerbache (11 points in 20 minutes)
-Oguz Savas, Fenerbache (11 points in 24 minutes)
-Mirsad Turkcan, Fenerbache (10 points, 9 rebounds in 28 minutes)

    Alba Berlin 68 - Lottomatica Roma 63

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=8

QUOTES: "I would like to congratulate my players for the first victory in the Euroleague. Alba was waiting for this for several years and we had to work very hard to be in the same league with the best teams. One of them we hosted tonight. So winning this game in front of our crowd in our new home, the 02 World, means a lot to us. I congratulate my players for being aware enough, hungry enough and tough enough to bring this win home. It was really a tough game and we could not get control of at any time and under no circumstances. We took over this game only in the last minute. For us this is an excellent victory, because in a strong group like this on any given day you cannot tell, which opponent you can bring down. I think we made a good statement with this victory, but it is also an obligation to follow it through, because it was just the beginning of the season." - Luka Pavicevic, Alba Head Coach

"Alba showed at home much more desire to win than our team did. Having not played so many games in our championship, we had to adjust to this type of game. In our national league game on Saturday, Fortitudo allowed us many fastbreaks and easy baskets. If we can play like this we are a strong team: if not, we are in trouble and this could be seen today. Today we shot our three-pointers very well, but we did not think about the crucial parts of the game, which were the offensive rebounds. We lost the game, because as a whole team we lost too many rebounds." - Jasmin Repesa, Lottomatica Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Immanuel McElroy, Alba (17 points, 9 rebounds in 35 minutes)
-Adam Chubb, Alba (12 points, 8 rebounds in 22 minutes)
-Aleksandar Nadjfeji, Alba (12 points, 4 rebounds in 21 minutes)
-Luigi Datome, Roma (13 points in 13 minutes)
-Andre Hutson, Roma (11 points, 4 rebounds in 26 minutes)
-Primoz Brezec, Roma (10 points, 5 rebounds in 23 minutes)

DKV Joventut Badalona 81 - Union Olimpija 64

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=9

QUOTES: "We had a slow start in this game, especially in defense, just as it recently happened in the Spanish League. We were nervous in the beginning but stayed focused despite trailing in the opening minutes. We managed to stay in the game in the first half and play our best basketball after the break. We improved our defense and that allowed us to collect some steals. Milic hurt us at power forward, as his versatility is dangerous, especially because Olimpija has good outside shooters. I want to congratulate my players for the effort they put out there. I am sure we will improve in the near future." - Alfonso Alonso, Joventut Head Coach

"I want to congratulate DKV Joventut because they never thought they would lose the game, and they created a good basketball atmosphere at home. We fought until the final minutes but we ran out of stamina in the fourth, when DKV was better than us. We made too many mistakes and that is something you cannot do if you want to win a Euroleague game. We managed to stay in the game against DKV in Badalona, but paid a high price for our mistakes. I am not satisfied with the way we played in the fourth quarter. We have a young, unexperienced team and Simas Jasaitis hurt us with his three-pointers. DKV Joventut plays well and I have to congratulate them for that. We will see what happens when they come to play against us in Ljubljana." - Alexandar Dzikic, Olimpija Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
    -Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Joventut (14 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks in 25 minutes)
-Demond Mallet, Joventut (11 points, 7 assists in 29 minutes)
-Pau Ribas, Joventut (11 points in 20 minutes)
-Bracey Wright, Joventut (11 points in 26 minutes)
-Mirza Begic, Olimpija (17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks in 26 minutes)
-Vlado Ilievski, Olimpija (15 points in 36 minutes)
-Marko Milic, Olimpija (13 points in 27 minutes)

    Real Madrid 87 - Panionios 66

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=10

QUOTES: "I am happy with this win, especially because we wanted to keep our intensity against a team like Panionios On Telecoms, which had not played the Euroleague for a long time and that came with high motivation to this game. I liked their three backcourt players, who are very different, so that each of them can set a different game rhythm. I have to highlight that Raul Lopez and Venson Hamilton are back in the team. Venson is once again one of us. Going back to the game, I am satisfied because my team managed to stay focused all game long and not only managed to keep its margin, but extended it to seal the outcome." - Joan Plaza, Real Madrid Head Coach

"First off, I would like to congratulate Real Madrid for this win, I think it was a well-deserved one. We hope that we use this loss as a lesson that allows us to reach higher in the Euroleague. I hoped my team to play a little bit better that we missed our injured players. We did not play well in transition and committed too many turnovers. We were not focused in the second half, allowing Madrid to seal the outcome." - Aleksandar Trifunovic, Panionios Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Quinton Hosley, Real Madrid (17 points in 25 minutes)
-Felipe Reyes, Real Madrid (16 points, 6 rebounds in 17 minutes)
-Jeremiah Massey, Real Madrid (10 points in 20 minutes)
-Goran Nikolic, Panionios (12 points in 26 minutes)
-Ioannis Georgallis, Panionios (12 points in 26 minutes)

CSKA Moscow 90 - Armani Jeans Milano 64

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=11

QUOTES: "Actually the game was more difficult than the result can say. We had all the respect to Armani Jeans team and I am happy we managed to play together, to show very good level of togetherness, both on defense and on offence. Milan played much better in the second half and I expect very strong challenge from them when we will travel to their arena in December." - Ettore Messina, CSKA Head Coach

"Our first Euroleague game was a very difficult one. It is not easy to play against such a big team like CSKA, especially on its court. Now our main goal is to recover some of our players, and first of all to recover their confidence. Yes, we are an athletic team, but the athleticism is not enough to win games. You have to play basketball, you have to put the ball into the basket. And if you miss some open shots, it becomes very difficult to get that confidence back". - Pier Luigi Bucchi, Milano Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Trajan Langdon, CSKA (18 points in 24 minutes)
-Nikolaos Zisis, CSKA (15 points in 15 minutes)
-JR Holden, CSKA (13 points, 5 assists in 28 minutes)
-Erazem Lorbek, CSKA (12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals in 27 minutes)
-Ramunas Siskauskas, CSKA (11 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists in 30 minutes)
-Pape Sow, Milano (12 points, 4 rebounds in 22 minutes)
-Jobey Thomas, Milano (12 points in 27 minutes)

    Efes Pilsen 61 - Partizan Belgrade 60

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=12

QUOTES: "I think we did what we planned before the game, especially on defense. But the thing which we didn't plan was the offensive rebounds we gave up. If Partizan scored just half of the chances of those rebounds, they could have won the game easily. They already scored nearly the half of the points they had from offensive rebounds. Our rotation is damaged because of the injuries we have to Mario Kasun, Preston Shumpert and Baris Hersek. Our other players in this rotation got tired in the last quarter and that's why we gave up too many offensive rebounds. The game ended with an artificial score as we gave the chance to our opponent to score instead of having a six-point difference at the end of the game with our own mistakes. Anyway, it's good to start the new season with a win. I hope we have the missing three players with us against Armani Jeans Milano next week." - Ergin Ataman, Efes Head Coach

"First of all I want to congratulate Efes Pilsen for their win. We have good relations with Efes Pilsen and we are good friends. Both teams changed many players in the roster. Me and my collegue Ergin Ataman did everything we can to make the game exciting with our efforts. The ups and downs are normal, because this is the beginning of the season. Of course, we still have lots of work to do for our teams. If you analyse the game, you can see empty minutes from our side. We had good offense in the last quarter to come back in the game. But we made easy mistakes and lost the game. We have lot of things to do. We will try to work harder to overcome those mistakes." - Dusko Vujosevic, Partizan Head Coach

    NOTABLE PLAYERS:
-Milos Vujanic, Efes (17 points, 4 assists in 32 minutes)
-Bootsy Thornton, Efes (10 points in 37 minutes)
-Novica Belickovic, Partizan (16 points, 8 rebounds in 31 minutes)
-Stephane Lasme, Partizan (11 points, 14 rebounds, 3 steals, 4 blocks in 27 minutes)

I would have to say that Maccabi got upsetted...

I didn't even think about how Childress will learn and grow from his knowledge that he'll be getting from the defensive players of Greece...man can't wait for him to come back to the NBA.

Good job, Kobimel. You've earned yourself a dinner at Spectrum if you drive.

Thanks man...I've been planning to start driving lessons online for a while now but I'm too damn lazy.

Childress will definitely learn from his time in Greece. Look for him to return the NBA tougher, stronger, more unselfish and a better defender.

I watched the Maccabi game today and I happily say they were a wreck. They definitely need time to gel, but I believe they'll make it to the Top 16, unfortunately.

Good to see people actually read this stuff. :D Seeing a quality response like that one in the international basketball forum makes my day.

    Kinda sad, huh?

Yep, some pretty nice plays there. Childress's block was sick.

The Euroleague has a "Euroleague TV" thing with all kinds of neat stuff.

Kobimel these are awesome! It's a real eye-opener seeing how many college and pro players are overseas these days.

Thanks Shape, great to have you back and active again.

There really are a lot of former NBA/NCAA guys in the European leagues...that list just scratches the surface. If you take into account the guys who didn't have 10 in any statistical category and therefore weren't "notable" (except for Jennings, cause he's just interesting to follow) plus the guys who aren't on Euroleague teams, you'll find a LOT more (even Joe Crawford is currently in negotiations with my team Hapoel Jerusalem, who play in the EUROCUP).

Those names are interesting because I think most of those players should be on NBA rosters instead of teams banking on "potential" versus substance. What I like about International play are the teams recognizing how a player can fit into a specific role and excel at it. They don't get caught up in a player's size, leaping ability, and raw potential.

If you compare the quality of the NBA today versus the 80's and early 90's there's a significant dropoff. The shooting is atrocious, the spacing is almost non-existent and the fundamental skill level isn't there anymore.

I'm hoping the NBA and Euro leagues can eventually get together and improve the brand of basketball for both sides. It would be nice to see a young high school, 1st year college player go to Euro club and learn the fundamentals of the game and have the proper time and coaching to develop. Plus it's a shortened season so there's less chance of the player getting injured at a young age from overplaying.

The Lakers and Regal FC Barcelona seem to be working on some type of affiliation. The Lakers have always been pioneers in the sport. They were the first NBA franchise to purchase their exclusive DLeague team. Most DLeague teams are shared by 3 or more NBA teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Lakers as the catalyst to help unite the Euro Clubs with NBA Franchises.

You're right about the fact that European teams don't go for players with a high ceiling over ones with proven skill. Usually you won't see an American player stay on the same Euro team for more than 1-3 years (JR Holden of CSKA, for example, is one of the few exceptions). Guys like Sam Clancy and Loren Woods bounced around the world from team to team for most of their international careers, as you can see in the articles I wrote about them (both articles can be found through the search function if you're interested). Chemistry usually isn't a problem unless a team changes most of its roster in one off-season (like Olympiacos), since a lot of the European players on the big teams stick around for a while.

The NBA lost a lot of its fundamentals because young American players started to see the flashy moves of DrJ and Magic, something that hadn't really been a big part of the league before, and they started to copy them. Fundamentals lost their importance if you could dribble between your legs and then pass no-look to a teammate for a dunk. I saw a clip on ESPN I believe about how kids today are learning how to shoot a layup and then going straight to the three-point line instead of gradually expanding their range, resulting in a bad shooting form because they're not strong enough to shoot threes yet.

Young guys going to Europe for experience could definitely help out both the Euroleague and the NBA. The Euroleague would gain even more talented players, and the fact that they would leave after a season or two wouldn't change much since as I said Americans usually don't stick with the same team for a long time. The NBA would get game-ready players who now have pro experience. Its a win-win situation for those two, but the NCAA would have a huge problem if players started to opt for the Euro-NBA route instead of going to college.

Yes! I have Loren Woods and Rakocevic on my Euroleague fantasy team!

I'm picking up Boniface N'Dong on waivers. Love that guy.

You have a Euroleague fantasy team? That's surprising...and awesome. I never really got into the whole fantasy business...

I'm looking forward to seeing you post here then, ghoti. ;)

There's a small chance I made that up... :smiley-unsure: :innocent:

My D-League team is real, though.
