Got a five year ban recently. He is a good coach, but he's known for those recruiting scandals. Will a school take a chance on him again?
I cant imagine he would get a better gig than being an assistant on an NBA team. If he is ever a head coach again I think its for a small school.
I can't imagine him being able to get back in to a head coaching gig, at least not at a big school. He's been busted for the same thing twice, and that's not good. Regardless of how good of a coach he is, no team is going to take him because of his reputation.
Why would he not? Bruce Pearl got in trouble for something similar quite awhile back if I remember right and he's back. I could see a struggling big program give him an offer, someone like a Minnesota or Oregon State type situation where they can't compete in a big conference.
Why not? Because he fucked up not just once, but twice. His reputation has been destroyed and I don't know if any school is willing to put their reputation on the line by hiring him.
There are schools that don't have any reputation anyways, so what would they have to lose? In 6 years from now, how many recruits will remember he messed up? Kids can relate to not being perfect anyways, and he's still a great coach. He's also should be coaching in the NBA for 5 years by the time his ban is up, so I don't see him having any problem getting recruits. There are definitely teams like the Oregon State's or Iowa State's that would take a chance on him I bet if they continue mediocrity or a high mid-major would give him a job like UW-Milwaukee did with Pearl.
If I am an AD in a big time DI conference there is no way I hire Sampson. Now a lower tier DI school I could see that happening, but why even go back to the NCAA if you can be an assistant in the NBA? Its pretty clear he cant follow the NCAA handbook on recruiting, so why risk anymore punishment and embarrasment?
