Do you sign Matt Cassel and take that chance?

Do you take a QB with the number 1?

Me personally, I would take someone like Tebow or Chase Daniels later, groom him for a year or two. Trade down in the first. Build up your defense

its next to impossible to trade down from the number 1 unless there is a great prospect there.

    i say o-line.

They have a Star WR. A Good RB. QB would be next in line. Maybe keep Kitna for one more year so Bradford/Stafford can get some grooming. Defensively maybe get a solid young corner and a nice DT.

I'd say take Bradford or Stafford. Both would be great QBs to build your franchise around, and coupling them with Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith could give them a very good offensive trio for years to come.

If its true that Brady might miss next season, Cassell will get franchised.....If you have a conviction on a QB, you take him, otherwise, Andre Smith at LT for the next 12 years seems good to me....

Winter: Pry Cassel away from New England. Sign Bart Scott (the likely odd man out in Baltimore's LB jam, he would bring the right mentality to get this team turned around). Sign an experienced interior lineman (Birk, Goff). If Jason Brown (Ravens guard) somehow finds himself on the open market, make him the priority.

Spring: Cassel's future will be determined well before the draft, so Detroit has ample time to plan their draft. If they do get Cassel, take Andre Smith with the first pick, and take a defensive lineman (preferably an end) with the 20th pick. If they don't get Cassel, take Bradford, OR take Smith anyway and hope that Mark Sanchez is there at 20. They have to get an offensive lineman at some point in the first round. In the second round (with pick 1), go for the shutdown corner (or safety, should Taylor Mays still be available), or the D-lineman if they didn't already draft one. Pick up a linebacker at some point too.

If they draft Smith, they can move Backus to guard and the line would look decent with RT-Gooster, RG-Revolving door C- Raiola LG- Backus and LT- Smith.

What's funny is after all that bullshit from Millen, the Lions still need a #2. Bryant Johnson was a decent signing, but I wouldn't call him a #2 though. A bigger need than WR is TE. They NEED to get one in the draft.

I'm hoping they take Stafford. We need to think long term. You don't pay close to $80 million for a LB like Curry at #1. The only Olineman worthy of the first pick is Jason Smith.

Andre is a head case. They dude shit the bed and rolled in it at the combine. I guess that's what you can expect from an immature fatty.

If they draft Stafford they need to be sure to get a LG to fix that side of the line, and possibly draft a replacement for Backus at 20 if Oher falls. Or they could get Beatty (or whatever his name is) at 33.

Fuck this team needs about 20 draft picks in the first 2 rounds. There's so many holes. I don't want to neglect the defense, but the left side of the Oline needs to be fixed, and we need a TE. Next year's draft is going to be stacked on the defensive side of the ball. I'm hoping Schwartz can work a little magic with a new scheme because we all know Marinelli was in way over his head.

I doubt Backus could play guard. The dude gets bull rushed by 260 lb DEs. How the how is he going to handle 300+ pounders on the inside. If we draft an LT, Backus should be cut.

Before the suspension and bad combine showing, I was on the Andre Smith bandwagon. If we did take him #1 overall, I think it would have been good to start him at LG for a season, then kick him outside and cut Backus next year. That's all thrown out the window though now with Andre showing major red flags.

Why are you saying "WE"? And all my Smith talk was before I knew he was a headcase. Im leaning towards drafting Curry. Screw the money issue, Curry will be a star in the league.

I'm a Lions fan. That's where "we" came into play.

I know that Smith talk was prior to the combine. I saw the time stamp on your post. Just thought I'd make a point about Backus playing guard.

Curry has the potential to be a stud, but he's no guarantee. At this point he's the "safest" pick, but that doesn't eliminate the risk of him busting. I don't think making him the highest paid LB in the league before he plays a down is good cap management. I think he has the skillset to play any LB position in either a 4-3 or 3-4, but there is no guarantee he'll be able to play the middle at a high level. He played the Sam at Wake, and has never really played in the middle. I'm sorry but you don't pay a guy that kind of money for a position he's never played before, and you sure as hell don't pay a strong side LB that kind of money...period.

Its just the Lions luck to have the number one pick in a draft with no number one player, huh?

Stafford is just to inconcistant for me, and next year's draft has better QB's.

I'd sign Leftwich, of course a little bias, but we had a bad O-Line and he did very well in spot duty. Like I posted in a previous thread, draft Curry.

Yeah a lot of people aren't sold on Stafford. He's young and should have stayed for his senior year.

As for the crop next year, it's going to be weaker than this year's. Thank god for Stafford, Freeman, and Sanchez all declaring or this could have been the worst QB class ever. It would have been headlined by D2 QB Rhett Bomar. Are you fucking kidding me?

Bradford-He's a major project whenever he finally declares. The kid has unbelievable accuracy. I don't think I've ever seen a QB hit WRs in stride as well as he does. He's got good height as well, but that's about where his positives stop. He's got TERRIBLE footwork. He's got a stiff front leg and is constantly throwing with his feet parallel to the line. He lacks any arm strength and has trouble getting enough velocity on the ball in the intermediate throws. He makes up for a lot of that with his accuracy, but when the ball is in the air that long, it's going to get picked off at the next level. The guy is thin as a rail, and really needs to add some weight. It's unknown if he is really durable because he had all day to throw and played in a shotgun heavy spread offense. Ah the spread offense...he's gonna have a long transition period trying to refine his game when he goes pro. The only spread QB with success at the next level is Drew Brees. It's gonna be a long road for Bradford.

Colt McCoy will be lucky to be a 4th rounder next year. Sure he's gutsy and tough, but he's small, thin, and lacks any arm strength. Oh yeah, he plays in a spread offense. The guy is Graham Harrell with some running ability. His game will not translate to the next level.

Tebow is not an NFL QB either.

Next year's QB class probably doesn't have a 1st round quality QB. There could be a couple surprises, but I think Stafford is the best bet within the next 2 years.
