From Yahoo: This seems to have the ring of truth to me. 1. We were supposedly about to trade Kirk for Harrington last year. Hell, back to 2003 we've supposedly had a hard-on for Al Harrington. 2. The Bulls need scoring help. I consider this trade roughly a push on the court, but since Harrington would be beloved and choses, and Tyrus is not, they'll actually play him. 3. As per Bulls form, it's trading a younger guy for an older guy, getting a short-term upgrade, and ignoring the more pressing issue that the Bulls likely won't have max cap space anyway unless we move Salmons or Hinrich. I'd really like to pursue a deal with Houston to get McGrady and unload some salary for this summer, and I don't know if it can be done if we ship James' contract off to the Knicks. Also, note, in the Yahoo article: If we could do both, I wouldn't be opposed, but I don't see how it'd be possible without exceeding the luxury tax or making us really thin depth wise.
I remember in the days we signed Ben Wallace that I suggested the Bulls use that money to sign Harrington and Brother Abraham. We could have signed both. If this comes to pass, we'd end up having had those guys on our roster anyway. Just way more expensive this way, and now we'd be getting a 29 year old Harrington instead of a 25 year old one. Frankly, I don't see the point of giving up cap space unless we're getting a guy who would be the FA we'd sign in the summer anyway.
apparently mcgrady was getting eviscerated in practice by the likes of trevor ariza who's shooting in the thirty percentile so the rockets decided to save face by keeping him on injured reserve. i suspect mcgrady as a superstar is long gone and at best he's a member of the rotation on an alright team.
Plus I think there's a loose correlation between the assist/to ratio of a player and their decision making ability (bball IQ). Harrington has 1.6 APG to 2.2 TO which is one of the worst ratios around.
Heh, I don't want him as a superstar, I want the ability of his contract to expire vs. the ability of Kirk Hinrich's contract to stay on our cap when we are trying to create cap space next summer
no way the rockets assume kirk's contract, in fact, i think his contract might one of the worse in professional sports right now. essentially he's being paid 10 million plus to be a backup point guard
This trade sounds like the dumbest thing in the world to me. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket for a great FA at the end of the summer.
Well, TMac is being paid $23M to not play at all Just going on what I read, which is stuff like what Woj says above. Hinrich is a backup because Rose is a star in the making. On the Rockets, however, Kirk would probably play 30 minutes a game splitting time with both Brooks and Ariza.
I would love to have him splitting time with Andre Miller. Is Kirk unhappy coming off the bench though?
yeah but he expires at the end of the season. brooks is a fringe all star in my opinion (just look at his numbers) and ariza is better than kirk, in fact, ariza might be the best FA signing this summer.
Agreed, but I wouldn't expect him to take their minutes. I'd expect him to replace Lowry's minutes this year and in the future, and a few of Buddinger's. Up front, in a trade with the Bulls, they'd also get Brad Miller, who'd certainly help while Yao is out and be an upgrade over David Anderson and Chuck Hayes.
I actually think Harrington-Tyrus swap, from a basketball standpoint, would be good for both teams. NY would get Tyrus, a high energy guy who would excel in a running game under D'Antoni. CHI would get Harrington, who would help out with the offense with his inside-outside game, granted....he's a tad sporadic at times and might hover around the 3pt line much.
By my calculations, if this trade goes through, it will actually result in just under $4M in additional expense, for the season on the part of the Bulls. First, we’re not paying 80% of Jerome James’ salary. When we take Harrington, we’ll have to pay 100% of his. Second, since it’d be a 2 for 1 deal, we’ll have to spend another $500-800k on a minimum salary player to get to the minimum roster size. If the trade goes through, I conclude the Bulls think Harrington’s offense might be the difference between a significant level of winning and losing. Perhaps they believe they need more offense to make the playoffs, and Tyrus won’t get much for them. I’m not sure I disagree with them. I’m not wild about Harrington, but especially since I don’t have faith in either Tyrus or the Bulls to utilize him properly, I expect Harrington to be more productive on the court. And that matters for this season. Beyond this season, of course, it’s better to have the younger RFA. But only if you can utilize him properly. Which the Bulls can’t. So it’s yet another deal that makes sense within the context of the Bulls own special brand of dysfunctionality. I think it gets done. The one thing that really bothers me about it is that it very much kills any way I can find to do the trade I keep talking about of Miller, Kurt and Jerome James off for TMac and change. I suppose we could replace James in that deal with Salmons, but that'd leave us thin behind the injury riddled TMac. How's about this Bulls trade Kirk/Salmons/Miller/2010 1st round pick to Rockets for TMac, Brian Cook, Kyle Lowry, Chase Buddinger Bulls trade Jerome James Tyrus Thomas to Knicks for Al Harrington They roll with an up-tempo lineup featuring: 1- Rose 28, Lowry 20, Hunter 2- TMac 34, Rose 10, Buddinger 4, Pargo 3- Deng 30, Buddinger 18, JJ 4- Harrington 34, Deng 6, Gibson 8, Cook 5- Noah 36, Cook/Gray 12 We'd still be too small up front and not very deep, but we'd gain 1. Lots and lots of firepower 2. Definite max contract space for this summer I'd expect that team to accomplish our main goals for this season. 1. Have max space for next summer while retaining our core players of Rose and Noah 2. Being good enough to make the playoffs, thus enticing a FA to consider coming here.
Your proposed deal actually looks good for all parties. How much you wanna bet Adelman creams at the idea of getting Brad Miller again lol
