I'm going to be visiting San Francisco in March and we're looking for things to do. Obviously we're going to do the normal things (Alcatraz, Sausalito, Berkeley, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown) and we're going to try and hit up the Raps @ Warriors on the 13th if possible. Suggestions?
San Francisco is a food lover's haven. I'd recommend Cancun for the burritos. It's in the Mission District and there's a lot of hot spots around there for night life. They are open late night on the weekends to help with the alcohol buzz. Haight Street Golden Gate Park - I recommend going on a Sunday because they close the park off to cars What are some things you're into? Music? Museums Exhibits? Type of food?
Great, thanks. I travel a lot and my favourite thing to do is basically to leave in the morning with little or no plan as to what to do, spend the whole day walking around and stumbling across stuff, and getting back as late as possible. The last thing I like to do is spend time in the hotel. Not too concerned with food, I'm sure we'll find good stuff for dinner but we usually try to go as cheap as possible for breakfast and lunch.
Ok, and yeah, we're probably going to go to that. Is it easy enough to get from Fisherman's Wharf to Oracle?
You'll enjoy San Francisco then. Union Street & Chestnut Street Haight Street Downtown SF Clement Street South of Market Mission Street A lot of places to discover in those areas. Enjoy. Not sure if you enjoy coffee but if you do then definitely get a cup of Blue Bottle coffee.
Yes, you can take the BART train. It takes about 20 minutes and will cost $7.60 round trip per person from the Embarcadero Station to the Coliseum/Oakland Airport Station. Jump on either the Dublin or Fremont train. When you arrive, just follow the herd, I mean crowd, over the bridge and around the Coliseum (where the A's and Raiders play). The Oracle Arena is the next big round building.
Yeah we went to the game. We took the BART from Embarcadero to the Oracle and back. No problem on the way there but it was super packed on the way back. There were a lot of homeless around Embarcadero station, as warned. None of them were aggressive though. One started yammering at me when I was at the machine but I couldn't understand him. My brother brought his DSLR and nearly had to miss the game because the lens was almost 3", which is the limit. He took the filter off and convinced the security usher it was short enough (we had no idea there was a limit beforehand). It might've been a tough situation because he told us to go put it in our car and come back but since we took the train that wasn't an option. We might've been able to find a locker to put it in but my brother was pretty hesitant to trust a locker in Oakland with his camera. The game itself was good for about three quarters then the Raps gave up. I wore my Right to Play Jose Calderon shirt and he happened to have a great game so I wasn't embarrassed at the end. We wound up sitting beside two other Raps fans but were in a section of season ticket holders. At one point they were shooting shirts into the crowd with a cannon and one of the season seats guys leaned over to catch one and dumped his beer on a woman in front of us. Her husband was not thrilled. Coming out of the arena we ran into a friend from home which was bizarre. We tried not to linger in Oakland. I can't imagine what it is like when the Raiders are playing--must be a madhouse. The trip itself was really good. We got to travel around the Bay Area to San Jose, Berkeley, Monterey/Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pebble Beach, Sausalito, Tiburon, etc.. Pebble Beach was gorgeous. Berkeley (where some of my family is from) is a shitty little town but UC Berkeley was nice. Went up into the hills for a fun drive. Went to Alcatraz... um, the girls went to the Ballet one night when we took my buddy to Hooters for his 18th birthday... spent a lot of time on the piers... went to Chinatown... Museum of Modern Art, De Young Museum, California Academy of Sciences... spent a day walking along Marine Drive (the weather was mostly perfect, warm/20-deg/sunny every day). Had several very good meals. We mostly stayed in North SF/Fisherman's Wharf. Didn't venture very far below GG Park except for coming/going to the airport. Only drove by Candlestick/AT&T. Overall it was a great time and I will visit again.
Dunno about the Oakland station but I know in the BART stations in SF homeless people sit by the machines and help people use them expecting some change as a reward. They're surprisingly well received as many people absolutely hate using the machines. Luckily I live in the same zone as SF so I never have to deal with figuring out how many zones I'm traversing and what not when buying a ticket.
