The Bears aren’t panicking about their lack of depth at quarterback.

But it’s safe to say the roster now contains the least-experienced group of backup quarterbacks in the league. The club officially signed Matt Gutierrez -- who has thrown just two passes in three years in the NFL -- Wednesday to add to a position group that includes an injured Caleb Hanie, who has played in two games and thrown seven passes as a professional, in addition to rookie Dan LeFevour.

Somehow the inexperience doesn’t appear to jibe with the complexity of Mike Martz’s offensive scheme. But the club doesn’t appear to be overly concerned. The Bears decided to bring aboard Gutierrez to take up some of the repetitions usually reserved for No. 2 quarterback Hanie, who suffered a shoulder injury in the preseason opener at San Diego.

Hanie’s timetable for a return isn’t yet known.

“We need a quarterback, No. 1. We looked out there,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “[Gutierrez] had some experience; some of our coaches are familiar with him. I don’t know a lot about him, but he’s a quarterback who’s played in the league. We’re going to give him a chance. We started the process today. We had meetings with him, trying to catch him up, so he knows what to do, so we can really get a chance to see what he can do.”

They were talking about signing someone the other day. What happened to that? It was on the radio when I was on my Chicago Stadium Adventure.
