Warriors Acquire Troy Murphy And 2012 Second Round Draft Pick From New Jersey
Team Sends Brandan Wright & Dan Gadzuric To Nets

The Golden State Warriors have acquired forward Troy Murphy from the New Jersey Nets, along with the Nets’ 2012 second round draft pick, in exchange for forward Brandan Wright and center Dan Gadzuric, the team announced today.

Murphy, 30, has appeared in 18 games this season for the Nets, averaging 3.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per contest. Originally drafted by Golden State with the 14th selection in the 2001 NBA Draft, Murphy has appeared in 639 regular-season games over 10 seasons with Golden State, Indiana and New Jersey, averaging 11.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 29.0 minutes per contest.

Wright, who the Warriors acquired from the Charlotte Bobcats in a draft night trade on July 28, 2007, has appeared in 21 games this season, averaging 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest. For his career, the 23-year-old has appeared in 98 regular season games over three-plus seasons and currently owns career averages of 5.7 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest.

Gadzuric, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks on October 20, 2010, appeared in 28 games for the Warriors this season, averaging 2.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest. The 33-year-old center, who has appeared in 511 regular-season games over eight-plus seasons with Milwaukee & Golden State, currently owns career averages of 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

I must admit, I don't really understand the financial intricacies of the trade, but I don't seem to mind it as much as some of you. I don't think it's a great trade, I don't think it's a bad trade, but I don't think it's gonna hurt us. I think that Murphy will more than replace BW & Gadz' production for the remainder of the season, then he's gone. If we buy him out, whatever, we didn't lose much anyway and we get a pick out of it. Murphy can help spread the floor and grab a couple rebounds. It's not like he's gonna be starting or taking anybody's minutes. The team needs depth, and this gives us a little more. Not a big Murphy fan, but worst case scenario he can hang out with Lin and Bell at the end of the bench.

There's nothing financial about it unless you count about a million and some change of additional cap space. It's about getting a draft pick for what would otherwise have been BWright/Gadz walking (as UFA's) for nothing.

I would have rather finished the season with BWright and Gadzuric than Troy Murphy and a 2nd rounder that might not even be worth giving up BWright for.

I sure hope this is part of a bigger deal.

The deadline's here and Murphy is still a Warrior (again). Welcome back Murph!!!

Murphy wouldn't be so bad if we played pick and roll. He's better in that regards I think.

Anyway, this primes the pump for a trade with New Jersey in 2012 for Deron Williams. We should have time to gather the pieces and be a playoff contender by then.

The Warriors do play pick and roll. Curry and Lee run it practically every other play.

Although, it wouldn't make much difference because Murphy would not provide much there anyway, and besides GS was/is planning for a buyout the whole time.

Riley on KNBR just said their reason was just to get the 2nd round pick. Their reasoning is they are willing to give up on Wright because they want to give the minutes to Udoh. Which makes no sense at all, seeing that Udoh has played almost entirely at the C spot this season.

Riley confirmed that GS had called "every" team in the league this deadline, and confirmed that they did go after guys like Granger, Iggy, Kaman, etc, but didn't want to give up very much.

Then he went on for 5 minutes to tell Tolbert about how good a 2nd round pick is...

I doubt there will be anyone in the 2nd round of the 2012 draft with as much potential as B Wright.

This is really a pretty senseless trade, but whatever. It's done. Welcome 2nd round pick! POs here we come...

I knew I be ragged on because I wanted Murphy back earlier. Maybe we can draw a semi-circular Murphy line ten feet from the basket and tell Murphy that's where you're going to stay during practice and games -- rebound, shoot, block out and eat your Capt'n Crunch. We can get one of those metal chains and dog collars to make sure he doesn't wander .

Are you purposely ignoring the fact that Murph is gonna get bought out?

Oh come now. This is all Larry Riley's fault. One of the biggest weaknesses of the Warriors is rebounding. So what does Larry Riley do before the trading deadline? He sends two of our bigs out for a second round pick and a guy who's been getting dub-dubs, but he says that he's gonna buy his contract out because he's already been here. That's really idiotic on Larry Riley's part and why Larry Riley should be fired posthaste. Not only that he says that he's going to release Troy Murphy before the trading deadline. That's another idiotic thing to say. If he did not say it, then there was a possibility that someone would trade for him. For example, what's wrong with offering Dorell Wright and Murphy to the Celtics for Kendrick Perkins? Wright's much better offensively than Jeff Green and shoots the 3-ball much better .

    UPDATE:

Again, GM Larry Riley messed it up. He's got the hottest buyout commodity, but Troy does not want to stay here because of his idiotic comments.

"Golden State Warriors forward Troy Murphy: The Warriors were expected to waive Murphy after acquiring him from the New Jersey Nets, but one source said the team is now considering keeping the 6-foot-11 forward because it needs size. Murphy hasn’t played since Jan. 7 after Nets coach Avery Johnson said he didn’t plan to include him in his regular rotation.

Murphy is expected to still push for a buyout. If he’s able to negotiate one, the Celtics will push hard to sign him. The Knicks, Lakers and Heat are also expected to have interest."

Thanks for the link JB. I'm so lost as what to think anymore, it seems like Lacob has 1 knee-jerk reaction after another, but doesn't act on any of them. I saw a writeup from GSOM that says pretty much that and more...

Yeah, I think part of the business side of things was that, in order to impact his market the most, Lacob knew he needed to make it look like he's a maverick, so to speak, bold, and willing to pull the trigger. He knew that this persona would bring in more revenue.

Imagine if the franchise was bought by a Cohan look-alike. It would not have had the same splash in the Bay Area.

Lacob was savvy and shrewd to play the persona of a bold, fan-friendly owner who will do whatever it takes to win. Of course, when your owner wears that persona, you sell more tickets.

Whether or not he can walk the talk... so far all he has to show for it is an over-paid Jeremy Lin and then this Murphy bullshit.

When I'm not sure about something, then I compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. For example with GMs, I compared Riley to a good GM like Sam Presti and see how he stacks up. Look at how Presti collects first and second round draft picks and is able to make timely deals.:
Best transaction: Selected forward Kevin Durant (2nd overall pick) in the 2007 NBA Draft.
