I'm very glad Reinsdorf feels that he has a championship-caliber team. It means he's going to spend to keep the nucleus together and add necessary pieces to further ensure its success.

I do wish the interviewer would have asked what the thinking was behind the "4" though.

Maybe he was just repeating what he'd heard earlier from MJ?

And even made it a more modest prediction (from 6 to 4)?

Do you guys want a conspiracy theory? If you assume that the CBA is going to become more restrictive this off season, this past trading deadline could have represented the last time Bulls personnel decisions risked sending the team into the luxury tax. KC Johnson has stated many times that Reinsdorf told him he'd be willing to go into the tax for a contending team. Connecting the dots, Reinsdorf thus was not able to make a bold prediction before these past two weeks about victories without potentially looking like he went back on his word. So . . . trade deadline passes; new CBA comes into effect; and Reinsdorf can claim he would be willing to go into the tax but it's not allowed under that new pesky CBA.

Huh? How could anything the Bulls have done at the trade deadline send them into LT territory?

Boozer, Melo, Rose, and Noah make $60m. Do the math for the rest of the roster. Like $10m for 8 players unless he busts the LT.

More interesting is if the owners see the Bulls as the business model. Huge profits for the owner.

Courtney Lee and OJ Mayo were likely to get hefty pay increases in two years. Indeed, under a best case scenario they would get hefty pay raises.

Meh... I think if any other owner said this, we'd rightly tear him or her a new one. This is no different than the Heat declaring themselves a dynasty before they've actually one anything.

I agree with the point you make that if any other owner made this prediction we'd tear him a new one. I disagree, to the extent, that this means we should rip Reinsdorf for his prediction.

The Bulls are in a position unto themselves. I love this clip of Jalen Rose and Skip Bayless talking about the Bulls' playoffs chances because it perfectly illustrates how this team has been sold outside of Chicago:

    link

Ex-players never give credence to the chances of young up start teams and they're probably right to be reticent. They're have only been a handful of championship teams in the last thirty years so it's a relatively good bet to say that it's going to be one of the teams that has already won. Players key in on this and for them it seems to be a situation where you're never really a contender up until the point you've won a championship. I think there's a lot to be said for that approach.

Then . . . the national media plays off this and reads the Bulls' lack of playoff chances based out of, as Skip Bayless states, "a lack of star power." In other words, the Bulls can't be an NBA champion because they don't have their own page on ESPN.com, which is inane.

In this bizarre media environment I don't mind Reinsdorf saying what he did. It's his job to get his city excited about the team. ESPN is way too invested in the Heat for them to provide a buzz and support is not going to come from ex-players unless the team actually wins a championship; so the only one left to let people know about the team is yourself (and the best way to do it is through anticipating multiple championships, not only one.)

Understand that, but you said this

If going into the LT-zone isn't allowed in the new CBA, then he wouldn't have been able to pay Mayo or Lee those elevated contracts. Unless of course your unstated assumption is that a team can go over to re-sign their own players.

Teams aren't making moves that would suggest you can't sign your own players. Teams are making moves like the MLE might be gone. How else can you explain Corey Brewer to Dallas on a multi-year deal.

Oklahoma Thunder may have something to say about 4+ titles. They looked fantastic last night. I love their core. It's better than ours although we have an easier opportunity to improve (think Bogans) then they do.

Yeah, wow. How fun is that team now? Perkins fits in perfectly to the extent that you can't even believe he's new. Starting Perkins leaves OKC a little light on offense in their starting lineup, with three players who are marginal scorers. But Ibaka looks like the second coming of Horace Grant in so many different ways and I expect him to improve like Horace did. It's almost freaky how much their games are alike -- Ibaka is even a little more athletic though.

I think the Thunder have the lineup of a championship contender. I don't think they have much of a chance to beat LA this year though because their defensive schemes kind of suck. (I have no idea where the fans or organization like Scott Brooks, but it looks to me, just from watching his schemes, that he has to be on borrowed time.) Once they get a better coach, watch out!

We have three starters (much of the time) and a few bench players who are marginal scorers.

I couldn't disagree more. The Bulls are generating plenty of buzz, and if anything, have been positioned as the good guys and up and comers as opposed to the Heat, who've pretty much openly embraced the role of being cads (at least until it got hard).

Reinsdorf, by making exactly the sort of statement you'd expect from the Heat, dilutes that "brand" instead of letting it build on the natural foundation of success.

On a somewhat related note, are there any two more abhorrent people on ESPN than Skip Bayless and especially Jalen Rose?

Grant Hill is an Uncle Tom? Really Jalen?!? Fuck you. Just plain old fuck you.

You know I usually like Rose. Agree with you on the comment though. It's way too close to "a black child with a book is acting white" for me.

So, if MJ says it about us (6 championships) its cool. If Reinsdorf says it, it's deserving of castration/anal extirpation?

    Does not compute.

And Jalen is a goombah, but I think the comment was about what he thought when he was 17. And SST, I think it's saying exactly what you think it's saying -- and I'm 100% sure that's what Jalen thought -- when he was 17.
