This seems like a no-brainer this year. We have the 2nd pick, and the consensus is that it's an Oden/Durant situation where we'll pick whoever between Rendon and Gerrit Cole that Pittsburgh doesn't take. Here are some write-ups:
There's also a shot that Bubba Starling (great name) overtakes one of them.

Really like Gerrit Cole, but I can't see Strasburg 2.0 like some are suggesting. He's got nowhere the velocity or the placement. I like him, but his upside seems slightly overrated.

I like the idea of Starling, but meh, I like Rendon a more safer pick.

If Starling said something like "I want to play baseball, but I'll play football if you low-ball me" then I think he'd have a shot. As it is, he won't say that and you might waste your pick on a guy who's going to play football, giving very little from this draft. At least Rendon or Cole has a shot at being in your lineup in mid-2012.

We have some decent young pitching. But watching this team hit for the last 2 years has me gouging my eyeballs out. Can't wait for June for Ackley to come up...hopefully we're not 20 games out by then/

I actually don't mind if we're bad one more year. There's another great prospect likely to come out next year, and we're getting deeper in prospects with our amazing farm team.

We're clearly not ready to make a run at a world series anytime soon, and Dustin Ackley looks promising.

With that said, Starling has (far and away) the highest ceiling, i'm really iffy on taking a chance on him.

I honestly don't see him as an elite prospect. He's the safest pick, but meh...i'm really getting into Starling.

If he's smart, baseball money >>>>>>> basketball money >>> football money

well, if he's smart, then baseball longevity for toolsy CF/P >> basketball longevity (unless you're Kareem or Karl Malone) >> NFL. And the added bonus that you might live and walk unaided past 50. But he's made it sound like he wants to go to college.
Complicating that, though, is that his family (which seems pretty normal) is having some financial difficulty with his dad being recently laid off. With Scott Boras and Bob Brower "advising" him, he'll get paid, or go to school after turning down a ridiculous offer.

I'll ask this, though...with the M's looking like another Top 5 pick is in their future for next year, would you take the risk on a lower-ceiling, "safer" pick who'll start for you at 3rd base by mid-2012, or would you try to get Bubba, have him go to Nebraska, lose your pick from this year for nothing and have, say, the 2nd and 5th pick next year? I don't know that we can afford to take years off without getting high-caliber talent into the farm system.
