Recap: Quakes come back again in wild 3-3 tie with FCD
    [IMG]

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Goonies’ legend just keeps growing – as does FC Dallas’ frustration.

Steven Lenhart bagged a late brace, including a 95th-minute equalizer, as the San Jose Earthquakes came back twice in the second half to force a 3-3 tie with FC Dallas on Saturday.

Lenhart headed home a ball flicked on by Alan Gordon, from a cross by Justin Morrow, to keep San Jose’s unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium intact. The Earthquakes have gone 11-0-6 at their primary venue since Aug. 13, 2011.

San Jose (18-6-7) inched to three points ahead of Sporting Kansas City in the Supporters’ Shield standings. The Quakes need to hold on for three more matches to claim their first hardware since returning to the league as an expansion team in 2008.

    Recap:
Wondo hat trick paces Quakes to 4-1 win vs. Rapids

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Chris Wondolowski’s record-breaking hat trick helped the San Jose Earthquakes to an easy 4-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night while helping San Jose take a step closer to the Supporters' Shield on an unseasonably brisk evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Wondolowski’s three goals helped him break San Jose’s franchise record for all-time goals scored, and also helped the Earthquakes move six points above Sporting Kansas City for the Supporters Shield with two games to go, although Sporting plays Columbus Sunday afternoon and have three games left on their schedule. The win did, however, clinch the top spot in the Western Conference playoffs for San Jose.

    Recap:
Wondo gets No. 26 as Quakes, Galaxy draw 2-2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — One goal back, one game to play.

San Jose Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski moved to within one goal of tying the MLS’ all-time single-season scoring mark, heading home his 26th of the season to force a 2-2 tie against the LA Galaxy on Sundayat Buck Shaw Stadium.

Wondolowski, who also hit the post twice in as many minutes during the second half, needs two goals next weekend at Portland to beat the current mark of 27 goals, set by Tampa Bay’s Roy Lassiter in 1996.

Wondolowski moved into a tie for second place on the league’s all-time scoring list, matching the 26 goals tallied by Stern John for Columbus in 1998 and Mamadou Diallo for Tampa Bay in 2000.

Robbie Keane scored his 12th goal in 15 matches and Edson Buddle, making his first start since since May 26, nodded in his third of the season to stake the Galaxy to a pair of second-half leads.

Quakes get Fucito from Timbers for second-round pick
    [IMG]

Thursday's MLS SuperDraft action got off to an early start as the Portland Timbers sent well-traveled forward Mike Fucito down the West Coast to San Jose for the Earthquakes' second-round pick (No. 34 overall) in the draft.

The Quakes now have the right of first refusal to Fucito and may negotiate a contract.

Fucito, 26, joined the Timbers via trade from the Montreal Impact on April 20, 2012, and appeared in 12 games (three starts) for Portland during the 2012 MLS regular season. The four-year MLS veteran has played 36 career regular-season matches for Seattle Sounders FC (2009-11), Montreal (2012) and Portland (2012), recording three goals and two assists.

    OPPONENT INFO

New York Red Bulls Scouting Report

The New York Red Bulls return to Buck Shaw Stadium for the first time since San Jose hosted the first leg of an Eastern Conference Semifinal on Oct. 30, 2010. The 2012 MLS Cup Playoff qualifiers boast a potent attack with Designated Players Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill combining with offseason acquisitions Juninho and Fabian Espindola. The Red Bulls were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw against the Portland Timbers during Week 1. Real Salt Lake incomers Espindola and Jamison Olave accounted for the scoring as New York jumped out to a 3-1 lead on the road, but the Timbers tallied twice in the second half to rally for a draw.

Last Game vs. New York Red Bulls

Earthquakes 2, New York Red Bulls 2; April 14, 2012; Red Bull Arena, Harrison, N.J.

The Earthquakes twice fell behind by a goal on the road, but fought back each time to earn a valuable 2-2 tie on the road against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Chris Wondolowski continued his sterling play with a goal and an assist, while Rafael Baca also scored for San Jose. The Quakes fell behind early as Thierry Henry found Kenny Cooper in the box and Cooper finished past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch for a 1-0 lead. However, San Jose responded quickly with a great combination play. Wondolowski found Khari Stephenson on the right wing and Stephenson crossed it for Baca. Baca coolly hit the back of the net to even the game in the 15th minute. After Dax McCarty scored to put New York ahead a second time in the first half, San Jose again had a response. Steven Beitashour curled in a left-footed cross to the back post, where Shea Salinas slid to pull the ball back to the front of the goal. Wondolowski then headed the ball past Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara for his seventh goal of the season.

History of the Quakes - New York Red Bulls Rivalry

Traditionally, the home side has had the advantage in the all-time series between two of the 10 original MLS clubs from the league's inaugural 1996 season, when these teams were named the San Jose Clash and New York/New Jersey MetroStars ... The Earthquakes had a 10-game unbeaten streak against New York from Aug. 9, 1998-July 2, 2003, posting a 6-0-4 record during that stretch ... That 10-game unbeaten streak is the third-longest against a single opponent in San Jose club history ... New York and San Jose had a pair of classic shootouts in 2003 and 2004 ... On July 2, 2003, the Quakes and then-MetroStars tied 4-4 at Giants Stadium, with Landon Donovan tying the game in stoppage time ... The following year, the two teams combined for 10 goals in a 5-5 draw at Spartan Stadium on May 8 ... The two teams met in the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time on Oct. 30, 2010, at Buck Shaw Stadium in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, as the Red Bulls won 1-0 on a goal by Joel Lindpere ... They faced off again on Nov. 4, 2010, and the Earthquakes defeated top-seeded New York at Red Bull Arena, 3-1, with Chris Wondolowski's 81st-minute goal assuring the Quakes of continuing their improbable postseason run that year in advancing 3-2 on aggregate to the Eastern Conference Championship ... Most recently, the Red Bulls took a 3-0 home decision last April 16, with the teams playing to an entertaining 2-2 draw at Stanford Stadium on July 2 in front of 41,028 spectators, the largest single-game crowd in club history ... With the league's unbalanced schedule in 2012, the two sides played just once, a 2-2 draw at Red Bull Arena on April 14.

Earthquakes Leaders vs. New York Red Bulls

Chris Wondolowski has two goals in eight match-ups overall with the Red Bulls, including one goal (in 2010) in five games as a member of the Quakes, and one goal (in 2009) in three games with the Dynamo ... Ramiro Corrales has three assists in 18 games against the Red Bulls as a Quakes player ... Steven Lenhart has two career goals in five games against New York, with one in four games as a member of the Columbus Crew, and one in his only appearance as a Quakes player on July 2, 2011 ... Khari Stephenson has one goal in three appearances against New York for the Quakes ... Steven Beitashour has one assist in one game ... Among two appearances against New York with FC Dallas, Marvin Chavez posted his only multi-goal MLS game to date, notching a brace in a 2-2 draw at Red Bull Arena on July 23, 2011 ... Jon Busch is 8-5-3 with four shutouts in his MLS career against New York, and 0-2-1 as the Quakes goalie.

New York Red Bulls Leaders vs. San Jose

Forward Thierry Henry has two goals and one assist in two career games against the Quakes ... Forward Kenny Cooper has four goals in five career games against San Jose, with two in three games with FC Dallas and two more in two matches with Portland a year ago ... Midfielder Joel Lindpere ahs two goals and one assist in four games for New York against the Quakes Midfielder Dane Richards has one goal and two assists in six games ... Defenders Jan Gunnar Solli and Teemu Tainio each have one assist in two games, while defender Roy Miller has one assist in four matches ... Rookie goalkeeper Ryan Meara has yet to appear against San Jose.

Earthquakes - New York Red Bulls Connections

San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch was born in Queens, N.Y., and San Jose defender Jason Hernandez was born in New York City, N.Y. ... Hernandez, who played at Seton Hall University (2001-04) in South Orange, N.J., which is less than six miles away from Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., was selected by the MetroStars in the first round (No. 6 overall) of the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft, and appeared in three games for the club during the 2005 season ... Quakes defender and captain Ramiro Corrales played parts of three seasons for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, appearing in 56 games with five assists from 1998-2000 ... Earthquakes midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy played for the Red Bulls from 2010-12, appearing in 51 games while scoring four goals and recording four assists ... Former Earthquakes defender and current Earthquakes Youth Development Academy technical director Chris Leitch had two stints in New York, one from 2003-05, and another from 2007-08 ... Earthquakes first round SuperDraft pick Tommy Muller (2009-12) and Red Bulls midfielder Ian Christianson (2009-12) played together for four years at Georgetown ... Earthquakes forward Mike Fucito, Red Bulls defender Kosuke Kimura and Red Bulls midfielder Eric Alexander played together in Portland in 2012 ... MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Reserve League: Earthquakes 0, Real Salt Lake 1

Real Salt Lake topped the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in Reserve League play on Monday at the Earthquakes Training Facility in San Jose. Real Salt Lake (1-0-0, 3 pts.) put the lone goal on the board in the 42nd minute as Joao Plata found Devon Sandoval with an open look at the net. Sandoval slotted the ball past Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham for the game winner. San Jose (0-1-0) had a few chances in the second half including an opportunity in the 51st minute. Alexandre Gonzalez Emerson broke free down the sideline, beating his defender before firing a shot that sailed just wide. The Earthquakes return to Reserve League play on Monday, April 15 against the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field.

    Three Join San Jose's Roster

The Earthquakes announced a trio of acquisitions on Friday ahead of their game against Real Salt Lake. The group included rookie signings Adam Jahn and Tommy Muller as well as a trade with Seattle Sounders FC for Trinidadian Cordell Cato. Cato, 20, had one assist in eight appearances during his first MLS season in 2012 for Seattle. The Trinidad and Tobago native also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 result for Sounders FC against the Earthquakes during U.S. Open Cup play in July. All told, the speedy Trinidadian had one goal and two assists in four U.S. Open Cup matches last year. Muller, 21, was San Jose's first round pick (No. 15 overall) in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. He captained a Georgetown squad that reached the 2012 NCAA College Cup Final in Hoover, Ala. The 5-foot-11 center back was a three-year starter, scoring four goals and recording four assists in 64 career appearances. He was an All-Big East Third Team selection in 2012. Jahn, 22, was a four-year starter for Stanford before the Earthquakes selected him in the first round (No. 15 overall) of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. The target man had 16 goals and 10 assists in 65 career appearances for the Cardinal. He was an All-Pac 12 and All-Far West Region selection as a junior in 2011 and a senior in 2012.

    Debut Efforts

Four players made their Earthquakes debuts in a 2-0 loss against Real Salt Lake on Sunday. That list included starts from former Toronto FC defender Ty Harden and former Portland Timbers forward Mike Fucito. Midfielder Cordell Cato, previously of Seattle Sounders FC, came off the bench in the 79th minute to make his first San Jose appearance while rookie Adam Jahn took the field for the first time in his MLS career in the 83rd minute.

    Rebound Performances

San Jose might have lost its first game of 2013, but history shows that the club is due for a rebound performance in Week 2. The Earthquakes are 4-2-2 all-time when playing their next match after losing a season opener. That stretch includes a 3-1-0 mark since the Earthquakes returned to MLS in 2008.

San Jose Earthquakes Rally Late for 2-1 Win against New York Red Bulls

Late goals from Chris Wondolowski and rookie Adam Jahn rallied the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-1 win at Buck Shaw Stadium Sunday night in front of a sold out crowd.

Jahn, a 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft pick out of Stanford, opened his professional scoring account in the 83rd minute and won a penalty in stoppage time to key the comeback. The win improved the Earthquakes to 1-1-0 on the year heading into their first road trip, a date with Columbus next weekend.

While San Jose put pressure on New York early, it was the Red Bulls who found the first goal. Thierry Henry floated a cross into the mix that glanced off of Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez's head to the feet of Red Bulls midfielder Eric Alexander. Alexander finished on the doorstep for his first goal of the season.

Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop inserted Jahn into the lineup in the 66th minute for midfielder Rafael Baca. The fresh target man proved to be the difference maker, starting with an 83rd minute equalizer. Midfielder Sam Cronin lofted an inch-perfect cross to the back post where Jahn slid and volleyed home his first professional goal.

Jahn was again the center of attention as the game entered stoppage time. The rookie rose and headed a ball toward goal that caught Red Bulls defender Roy Miller on the arm, earning the Earthquakes a penalty. Wondolowski had his first attempt blocked, but a New York player entered the box early, allowing a retake. The reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player tucked his next attempt away low and to the right, sealing the game for San Jose.

The Earthquakes were known for their late-game heroics in 2012. They set an MLS record with nine second-half stoppage-time goals, eight of which earned a win or draw.

San Jose returns to action on Saturday, March 16 against the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Earthquakes Use Comeback Magic Again to Earn 1-1 Draw

The San Jose Earthquakes pulled off another late comeback to tie the Columbus Crew 1-1 to pick up a valuable road point at Crew Stadium Saturday night. Justin Morrow played the role of hero with a left-footed blast from just outside the box to level the game in the 73rd minute. Glauber scored the only goal for the Crew. San Jose is now unbeaten in its past six matches against Columbus.

After a tight first half, the Quakes came out strong in the second half and created a number of chances. Shea Salinas had a right-footed drive saved by Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and Chris Wondolowski had a shot cleared off the line by the Crew defense.

However, the Crew struck first through a set piece. Federico Higuain swerved in a corner kick to the near post and Glauber powered through a few defenders to head home the game's opening goal in the 68th minute.

The Quakes struck back just five minutes later as Morrow, playing in his home state of Ohio, netted the equalizer. Ramiro Corrales found Morrow with nice pass at the left edge of the box and he smashed a left-footed shot past a diving Gruenebaum just inside the far post.

With the match level at 1-1, Sam Garza nearly struck for the winner late in the match. Adam Jahn got the ball at the top of the box and slipped Garza in with a through ball. Garza's shot beat Gruenebaum but just missed the far corner.

San Jose head back home next weekend when they host Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, March 23, presented by Supercuts. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium and will air live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF. Roller banners, presented by Supercuts, will be given out to 2,500 fans.

Wondolowski Winner Sends San Jose Earthquakes Past Seattle Sounders FC 1-0

The San Jose Earthquakes made it four in a row against Seattle Sounders FC with a 1-0 win Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Chris Wondolowski supplied the firepower for the Earthquakes (2-1-1, 7 pts.) with a first-half stoppage-time goal. San Jose is unbeaten in its last three since dropping their season opener on March 3 and has defeated Seattle in four consecutive meetings dating back to last season.

The Earthquakes are known for their second-half stoppage-time goals, but on Saturday it was extra time in the first half the provided the game's key moment. Goalkeeper Jon Busch started the scoring play with a drop kick from his box near the end of the 45th minute. Rookie Adam Jahn won the ensuing header, flicking the ball toward the box. Wondolowski was next, snaring the ball with a deft touch to set up a booming right-footed shot from the top of the box, beating Sounders FC (0-2-1, 1 pt.) goalkeeper Michael Gspurning at the far post.

The Earthquakes had several quality looks at goal in the second half, forcing Gspurning into four saves. That clip included a trio of diving stops, a pair on Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas and another on a point-blank shot from defender Ty Harden off a corner kick.

Busch and the Earthquakes picked up their first clean sheet of the season. The veteran goalkeeper made four saves on the night, the biggest of which came on a sequence in the 75th minute. Busch first dove to his right to stop a Mauro Rosales shot destined for the net and then blocked David Estrada's follow-up attempt, preserving San Jose's 1-0 lead.

San Jose returns to action on Saturday, March 30 against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Draw 1-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Chris Wondolowski scored his third goal of the season as the San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC in front of a sellout crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

San Jose (2-2-2, 8 pts.) found the scoreboard first, finally breaking through in the 18th minute after a series of dangerous chances to open the game. Wondolowski stole the ball in Vancouver's defensive third before Shea Salinas found Alan Gordon at the top of the box. Gordon deftly chipped a pass to Wondo on the run and the reigning Volkswagen MLS MVP buried his shot in the top shelf at the near post.

Vancouver (2-2-1, 7 pts.) would find an equalizer from Corey Hertzog in the 62nd minute. San Jose was playing down two men with Alan Gordon and Victor Bernardez waiting to be waived back to the field after switching cleats when Daigo Kobayashi's shot was deflected to the feet of Hertzog. The striker took a touch and then finished for the game's final goal.

The Earthquakes peppered Vancouver's goal to close the match and had several chances nearly find the net. Sam Cronin broke loose in stoppage time and beat Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Joe Cannon, but watched his shot hit the post. Wondolowsi found the rebound, but had his shot blocked by a defender on the doorstep. San Jose had four corner kicks in a row after that series; Dan Gargan had the best look during those spot kicks, heading a shot on target, but Cannon made a leaping save to preserve the draw.

Among the other highlights for San Jose was the return of forward Steven Lenhart. The fan favorite received a standing ovation when he entered the game in the 69th minute for Ramiro Corrales.

San Jose returns to action on Sunday, April 14 against the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on NBC Sports, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Rally for 2-2 Road Draw against Chivas USA

Cordell Cato's first career MLS goal was a timely one, rallying the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on Saturday.

The Earthquakes (2-3-4, 10 pts.) pressed the action for most of the night, out-shooting Chivas USA (3-3-2, 11 pts.) 21-7 while holding a 58-42 percent advantage in possession. However, after taking an initial 1-0 first-half lead, the hosts scored a pair of early goals in the second stanza to put the pressure on San Jose.

Chris Wondolowski tallied for the fourth time in 2013 to open the scoring on Saturday. He broke loose at the far post on a spot kick from Shea Salinas in the 40th minute, tapping in a looped cross from close range for a 1-0 lead.

Chivas USA scored the next two in a four-minute span out of the break. Jorge Villafana sent a cross into the 6-yard box that Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch tried to punch away in the 47th minute. However, the deflection came off of Chivas USA's Mario de Luna and back into the goal to knot the match at 1-1.

Tristan Bowen capped Chivas USA's scoring in the 51st minute with a blast from inside the area. Eric Avila rolled a cross across the box and found Bowen open on the far edge. The striker punched his shot through traffic to beat Busch at the far post, giving Chivas USA a 2-1 lead.

San Jose peppered Chivas USA's frame for the remainder of the second half, but the equalizer didn't come until the 67th minute. Cato, who came on for Marvin Chavez in the 67th minute, made a darting run to the near post to finish a Salinas cross from the wing. Nana Attakora was also credited with an assist on the play after chipping a ball past the back line to Salinas in stride.

The Earthquakes hit a pair of milestones during the match, including a new club record for corner kicks in a game with 15. Additionally, defender Justin Morrow made his 50th career MLS start.

San Jose returns to action on Saturday, May 4 against the Montreal Impact at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Rally from Two-Goal Deficit to Tie Montreal Impact

The San Jose Earthquakes rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw the Eastern Conference-leading Montreal Impact 2-2 at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

San Jose (2-3-5, 11 pts.) out-shot the Impact 16-6 and had a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks, but had to settle for a tie with the top team in the East. Midfielder Sam Cronin sparked the comeback with an assist and a stoppage-time equalizer, his first goal of the season and second of his four-year career with the Earthquakes.

The Earthquakes controlled the early tempo of the game, but found themselves behind when Impact midfielder Justin Mapp unloaded from 35 yards out in the 34th minute for his first goal of the season. The veteran winger would connect again just two minutes into the second half, getting on the other end of a cross from forward Andrew Wenger for an easy tap-in at the far post.

Rookie forward Adam Jahn pulled one back in the 59th with his third goal of the season. Marvin Chavez located Chris Wondolowski at the top of the box, sliding a pass that was quickly redirected to the feet of Cronin. The center mid calmly took a touch and then slipped a through ball on the run to Jahn, who trapped and buried his shot toward the far post.

The Earthquakes waited until stoppage time to find their game-tying goal. Walter Martinez sent a ball into the mix that found Wondolowski open with his back to the goal. Wondolowski headed a pass back to Cronin near the edge of the area where the former Wake Forest product took a touch and fired through traffic and past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Troy Perkins to tie the game.

Cronin's goal was San Jose's third of the season in second-half stoppage time (the club set an MLS record with nine in 2012). The rally also marked the fifth time the Earthquakes have come from behind to draw or win a match in 2013.

Also of note for the Earthquakes, Martinez and forward Marcus Tracy made their MLS debuts. Martinez came on for Rafael Baca in the 62nd minute while Tracy entered in the 76th for Chavez.

San Jose returns to action on Wednesday, May 8 against Toronto FC at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Come from Behind to Top Toronto FC 2-1

The San Jose Earthquakes scored twice in the second half to rally past visiting Toronto FC on Wednesday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Adam Jahn and reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player Chris Wondolowski each found the net as San Jose (3-2-5, 14 pts.) snapped a six-game winless streak. The result was the sixth game this season that the Earthquakes have come from behind to win or tie in the second half.

The Earthquakes fell behind early as Justin Braun found the net in the 14th minute. Irish defender Darren O'Dea sent a free kick into the mix where Doneil Henry rose and won the header. Braun positioned himself in front of a San Jose defender and volleyed home the goal from six yards out.

Jahn found an equalizer just three minutes into the second half. Dan Gargan started the play with a throw-in to Wondolowski. The Danville native flicked a pass to Jahn who stepped over the ball and then fired with his left foot to beat goalkeeper Joseph Bendik.

That goal set the stage for another dramatic comeback. Marvin Chavez teed up a corner kick in the 83rd minute, sending the ball near post to countryman Walter Martinez. The Honduran international flicked a no-look header into the keepers' box where Wondolowski redirected the ball into the net with his thigh.

San Jose dominated the stat sheet with a 17-7 advantage in shots and 59.5 percent of the possession.

After Wednesday, Wondolowski is tied for second in MLS with five goals while Jahn leads all rookies with four.

Meanwhile, the Earthquakes are unbeaten in their last five games against Toronto FC with a 3-0-2 slate during that time. Additionally, Wondolowski now has seven goals and two assists in his last six games against the Canadian side.

Also of note, Gargan made his 100th career MLS start on Wednesday. The traveled veteran defender has made stops with Colorado, Chivas USA, Toronto FC, Chicago and San Jose during his eight-year MLS career.

San Jose returns to action on Saturday, May 11 against Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. Kickoff is 1 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Fall 4-0 on Road vs. Seattle Sounders FC

The San Jose Earthquakes fell 4-0 against Seattle Sounders FC in front of a crowd of 38,880 on Saturday at CenturyLink Field, snapping a four-game winning streak against their hosts.

Seattle forward Lamar Neagle opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Eddie Johnson played Mauro Rosales in the middle of the area where the Argentine midfielder used his chest to lay a pass off for Neagle. Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch nearly pushed the ensuing shot wide, but the powerful blast careened off his hands and into the net.

Rosales doubled Seattle's haul moments before the halftime whistle. Earthquakes midfielder Rafael Baca was whistled for a foul and issued a yellow card after he was deemed to have taken Brad Evans down just outside the box. Rosales capitalized, sending the free kick off the post and into the net.

Neagle tallied his second of the match in the 54th minute. After pressuring Seattle to start the second half, the Earthquakes allowed Neagle a slim opening on a Sounders FC counter attack. Neagle took advantage, slamming his shot off the post and into the net.

Obafemi Martins tacked on Seattle's fourth goal two minutes into stoppage time, polishing off a close-range shot after Justin Morrow's attempted clearance deflected off a San Jose defender and to the feet of the Nigerian Designated Player.

San Jose returns to action on Saturday, May 18 against the Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw Stadium for Health & Wellness Night, presented by Kaiser Permanente. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Chavez's Stunning Free Kick Rallies San Jose Earthquakes to 1-1 Draw

Marvin Chavez struck from 30 yards out on a free kick to rally the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The result was the seventh time the Earthquakes (3-4-6, 15 pts.) have come back to win or tie a match in the second half this season, tops in MLS. Additionally, San Jose extended its unbeaten streak against the Rapids (4-4-4, 16 pts.) to five games - 3-0-2 since a 2-1 loss at Buck Shaw Stadium on Aug. 13, 2011.

The Rapids were first to the scoreboard thanks to strike from Nathan Sturgis. Martin Rivero swung a corner kick to the near post where Sturgis won position and volleyed home his first goal of the season in the 24th minute.

Once again, the Earthquakes found an answer in the waning moments of the second half. Chavez teed his shot up in the 78th minute, knuckling a shot past Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin for his first goal of 2013.

Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez made his first appearance since March 30, starting and playing the full 90 minutes. The veteran center back missed seven matches due to a concussion suffered against the Houston Dynamo on March 30 and a calf strain he picked up during training in April.

San Jose returns to action on Saturday, May 25 against FC Dallas in Texas. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Drop 1-0 Road Result against FC Dallas

The San Jose Earthquakes fell 1-0 against Western Conference leading FC Dallas on Saturday. San Jose outshot their hosts 17-10 and out-possessed them, but came up short thanks in part to several key saves from FC Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez.

FC Dallas (8-2-3, 27 pts.) scored the game's only goal midway through the first half. David Ferreira carried the ball for half the length of the field on a counterattack before finding Fabian Castillo open on the right wing. Castillo cut back toward the goal and then placed a shot to the far post that narrowly eluded Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch.

San Jose (3-5-6, 15 pts.) had its chances in the second half, including a pair from reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player Chris Wondolowski. The first came in the 81st minute as Shea Salinas floated a cross to the back post where Wondolowski volleyed a shot that was bound for the net if not for a reaction save by Fernandez. Wondolowski had another chance minutes later, sending a header low toward the near post, but Fernandez was again game to the challenge with a diving stop.

The Earthquakes return to action on Tuesday, May 28 against the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium in South Carolina for the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. PT with a livestream available at www.uslnation.com (http://www.uslnation.com/) . San Jose's next MLS match is Saturday, June 1 against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium.
