I'd say it was more the characters. Looking back on this trilogy, I can't help but think how much better the character development could have been if it was an HBO series (or some equivalent). Nolan really crams a lot of characters into these films and with his major plot shifts toward the ends of the films a lot of characters seem underdeveloped.

Cabin in the Woods - 9/10 Doesn't understand the hate it's getting from the average viewer. The last 20 mins really made the film for me.

The Campaign -- 7/10 -- some funny moments but it will feel very familiar and tired to fans of Will Ferrell/Adam McKay films
Casa de mi Padre -- 5/10 -- doesn't find a consistent comedic tone to hang it's hat on though it has some originality
Lockout -- 6/10 -- exactly what you'd expect to the point where you wonder if it is a sci-fi action movie or a parody of one
The Expendables 2 -- 4/10 -- an onslaught of gunshots and cameos, in-jokes, and cliches, to the point where you wonder if any of the actors give a shit

    Apollo 18 - 3/10.

Blair Witch Project rehashed on the moon.

I didn't like Blair Witch Project either.

Rise of the Zombies -- 3/10 -- Lots of locations and some known actors don't make this derivative zombie movie anything new or exciting. Danny Trejo will be in ANYTHING.

Super -- 8/10 -- Small-budget counterpart to Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass. Super is original and has good performances. Should've done better than it did--hopefully DVD and Blu-Ray sales made up for a lackluster box-office performance.

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises was about a 4/10. The fact that Catwoman, "Robin" & Bane were able to figure out who Batman was from the jump was pathetic. Also, Batman couldn't fight Bane at all in the beginning but all a sudden he comes back and can deliver blows. I feel this last installment of the cool Batman series was very disappointing and left a bad taste. The producers really just couldn't seem to top Batman The Dark Knight with the introduction of Joker. Boooo!

Avengers was a 10/10. I'm a returning die-hard Marvel Superheroes fan and this movie resurrected my love for it all. The action was intense, lines weren't cheesy and I seriously can't wait for Avengers 2. Marvel is back on the map!

Skyfall (IMAX) -- 8/10 -- I liked it. I thought it was the most enjoyable film of the new series. Campy and fun. Javier Bardem was hilarious.

Django Unchained -- 10/10 -- Likely the last of Tarentino's revenge series of films, Django represents the most traditional story arc he's told but it never feels well worn or cliched. In typical fashion it contains very tense moments, very funny moments, and a lot of tremendous dialogue. Waltz stands out, obviously, in a role a little more subtle than The Jew Hunter but equally as riveting. DiCaprio is hammy but not terribly distracting.

Dredd (3D) -- 8/10 -- A modern take on the Die Hard style of action movie. Very lean film. Blows through under 90-minutes in no time. The action sequences are over the top without being exhausting, back-stories for characters are set up quickly and relevant, foreshadowing leads to satisfying call-backs, and Karl Urban somehow delivers a good performance despite having a mask on for literally the entire film. I liked it. Loses a point for the very first word of dialogue being Urban pronouncing America as "Ameri-kerr". Dude, really?

Apparently Tarantino will make a third and final "re-imagining history" flick FWIW.

Also saw Django, I'd give it an 8.5/10.

^ Yeah I guess Kill Bill 3 is on again so he'll have at least one more revenge movie with the tables getting turned on Bea this time.

The Killer (1989) -- 6/10 -- I got tired of hearing about this one without ever having seen it. While the gunfights are exciting and well put together, as you'd expect, the sappy story line and a truly pathetic female lead (only woman in the film) keep it from being on the same level as Hard Boiled. A run of awful American films in the 00's behind him, Woo is now back in Hong Kong where I hope he can figure out what went wrong (casting!) stateside and get back to what made him a legend there.

13 Assassins -- 8/10 -- Takashi Miike's take on Seven Samurai revolves around a group of samurai reluctantly forced to assassinate the sadistic brother of the Shogun before he plunges Japan back into war on a whim. The story is very simple with the badly outnumbered group facing down the Lord and his personal guard in a fortified village. As you might expect from Takashi, the violent imagery can be shocking but it never gets in the way of the story. If you like Seven Samurai or The Magnificent Seven you'll probably like this one, so long as you have the stomach for it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey -- 8/10 -- As a nerd I relish any time I get to spend in Peter Jackson's take on Middle Earth. I can understand why people are calling this series bloated--The Hobbit isn't a very long book so Jackson has incorporated material from LOTR and other stories and poems by Tolkien to fill it out--but I can't get enough. I didn't watch this in 48fps or 3D so I have no take on whether that adds to or detracts from the film.

Stake Land -- 7/10 -- horror is the easiest genre for filmmakers. What's trickier is to make a genre film like a vampire movie on a small budget and still have it feel original and interesting. Great atmosphere, a nice, slow-burning story, great scenery, and balanced performances make this one worthwhile. Loses a point for having a ludicrous final boss fight.

The Grey -- 6/10 -- I thought this movie was about Liam Neeson fighting wolves with knife hands? Without him it wouldn't have been watchable. Another slow-paced thriller with great atmosphere. Sadly there just isn't a whole lot going on in this one and we've seen movies like The Edge before. Neeson props the whole thing up with his sad, rumbling voice and commanding presence.

Cockneys vs. Zombies -- 6/10 -- derivative of Shawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later, obviously, but has a few things going for it: the cast is good, especially Alan Ford (Brick Top from Snatch), it looks pretty good (save for shitty digital muzzle flashes), and there are enough humourous moments to keep it from going cold. Sadly it isn't very funny or exciting and it never really seems to gain a foothold between wanting to be a parody or a horror comedy (if that makes sense).

Grave Encounters -- 2/10 -- sucks. Imagine if The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and The Ring had a low-budget baby: you're picturing Grave Encounters. I don't even like those other movies but would rather watch someone trying to do something new than people just rehashing the latest tropes.

Chernobyl Diaries -- 4/10 -- what diaries? Who's diary? Even Romero made a diary movie lately. Diaries are for little girls, not horror movies. If you want to watch a bunch of pretty teenagers run around a dark industrial site for an hour, pick this one up.

Hard Ticket to Hawaii -- 3/10 -- Red Letter Media reviewed this one and it looked like campy fun so I got it. It's an unapologetic not-quite-softcore T&A movie with a couple of insane moments (the rocket launcher & the snake) but not much else.

Miami Connection -- n/a -- Can't really give this one a rating since it is an abysmal failure from a film-making standpoint. Student films are put together better than this one. However it is a gloriously bad film that has so much going wrong that it comes back around and becomes something fun and entertaining. Bad editing, terrible acting, nonsensical plot, scenes that go nowhere and serve no purpose, and no concept of tone. It's as if they made two movies: friends in a band going to college and training TKD, and ninjas and bikers in a drug war, then mashed them together haphazardly. Wonderful, wonderful schlock.

Oldboy -- 9/10 -- Spike Lee is remaking this (ugh) so I thought I'd go back and have another look. Great mindfuck thriller.
