Looks like he may not want to sign with the Lakers. I mean, look how crappy that team is and he's not even the primary guy. There's talk that he may put the Lakers in a position where they would have to trade him or see him walk for nothing. Maybe they'd go for Noah and Boozer? Something like this works: http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=a8soh7d Obviously Howard would have to agree to extend his contract with the Bulls before we'd make such a deal. This would leave us with a starting lineup of: Rose, Belinelli Howard Taj, Deng With Kirk, Jamison, Butler, and Nate Robinson as our bench. In terms of salaries, we're sending out $26M and getting back whatever Howard requires. Looks like Howard for 3 year extension would be $20.5M to start, $23.6M the last year. For a 5 year FA contract, he'd be $20.5M to start, $26.7M the final year. A 4 year FA contract would be $20.5M to start, $23.3M the last year. The contracts of Morris and Jamison are expiring. Figure Rip's gone next season, too. So we'd be in a $10M better situation than today. I think it's a win for both teams. LA gets two players who play every night and help them get better. They're going to lose Howard anyway. We're going to amnesty Boozer anyway. Losing Noah is tough, but we're talking about Dwight Howard taking his place. The guy's a perennial DPOY candidate, and can be as dominant a C as there is. He reminds me of a young Shaq or Moses Malone.
I can't blame him. The entire organization is imploding and everyone is scurrying around to find a scapegoat.
Correct me if im wrong but because dwight opted in this year I believe he cannot be extended and must be resigned. A player also cannot agree to sign with any team, even the team he is currently playing for, prior to his contract expiring. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Rule 30, NBA CBA FAQ Teams and players are not allowed to negotiate terms a new contract (other than an extension) prior to the July 1 when the player becomes a free agent. Rule 58 Extensions to contracts that are not rookie scale contracts (i.e., veteran extensions) may be signed up to June 30, the day before the player would have become a free agent. A contract that contains an Early Termination Option (ETO) cannot be extended if the ETO is exercised (ending the contract early). A contract with an option can be extended if the player opts-in. A contract with an option can also be extended if the player opts-out, as long as the extension adds at least two new seasons onto the contract (excluding any new option year) and the salary in the first year of the extension is not less than the salary in the non-exercised option year. See question number 57 for more information on options and ETOs.
I'm not correcting you if you're wrong. This is just what I found, and I may be misreading it or not finding some other rule that makes it not possible to extend Howard.
