No doubt the Giants have rocked...all I'm saying is that it should be surprised to see people chirping about other teams because this is the one time of year that everyone can have some hope. Go Cubs! We're in first place!!! Whoo hoo!

That said, beware of the woof gods, Giant fan. They have a way of changing things fast. Tim's haircut may also have PO'd the gods lol

Curious to see how Giants do. I cant say I have kept close tabs on them or anything, but have they added much this off-season?

Another sign that I'm getting old, I think the whole flat brim thing going on with baseball hats is ridiculous and that the look is dweebish.

You don't go about announcing a deal before it's done. Especially one like this, due to it's length and dollars, and with a player like the King.

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/spring2013/s...eattle-mariners-officially-agree-new-contract

"There were "minor concessions" made because of the concern for his elbow, a source told Olney."

Opt out after 3 years is not a minor concession. He got his money, and prob if he is injured the money will be deffer to some extent.

:) I just saw this and your following post. What do you think is a minor concession?

You think the King would commit to a 7 year deal, only if he can pitch? That is the point of MLB contracts, to protect players against declining performances, and injuries. And for teams to lock in players at XYZ rate, with the potential to market them.

As my last comment says. He's better off waiting to get those years and dollars from the Mariners or someone else, instead of giving in to arm trouble stipulations in his contract. According to the article, the years and dollars were as first reported.

Zdurencik didn't "announce" anything until today. It wasn't even the Seattle Beat writers. It was a USA today article that everyone (including ESPN) ran with.

Have you read any of Buster Olney's stuff this past week? He had a pretty good article about how, recently, many big-ticket contracts (especially with players with "red flags") have had protections for the team put into place. Many of those he talks about haven't been needed, but one (Lackey's) has.

And Felix has always said he wants to retire a Mariner. Additionally, 175M in the hand (with team protections for catastrophic injury) seemed to be better for him than whatever he might get 2 years from now. That's actually a bit telling to me, but I'm happy for it.

Every year I try to get into baseball but I find it boring to watch. I don't know how anyone can sit and watch a full game of baseball on TV.

I haven't read the article you are referring to. I guess we have to wait to see what the stipulation is. It could very well be team-friendly, but that is on Felix. He's the type of player that could wait, and then get that very same contract from the Dodgers, the Cubs, the Yankees, perhaps the Red Sox and the Mets to name a few teams whom might be interested. Putting him in the class of Lackey is kinda insulting no? I don't see a top 5 player having to take such a clause unless he wanted to, as you noted to protect his team.

My guess is that it's deferred cash if he's injured. He's too good to have to settle for less cash. You really think he's gonna give years and dollars away if he's injured? What purpose is there to 'contracts' then?

Best case is to be at the game, second best option is radio and third best is television, in my book. Game on the radio while you're driving, out for a jog or doing whatever is good stuff. Playoff baseball is actually great TV, but admittedly it isn't as good during the regular season when less is on the line.

Not a huge baseball fan but I got to go to opening day in Cincinnati yesterday. Im here for work and got company tickets. It was fun but fucking COLD! I only made it through 9 innings (went to 12 I think).

Also Yu Darvish is perfect through 7 with 12 strikeouts. He's going to have a monster year.
