Report: RSL acquire Findley's rights in trade with Portland
    [IMG]

Soccer By Ives is reporting that RSL have acquired the rights to striker Robbie Findley from Portland via trade, laying the groundwork for the return of the forward who scored 29 goals for the Claret-and-Cobalt from 2007 to 2010.

RSL declined to comment on the report when contacted by MLSsoccer.com.

Portland selected Findley in the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft, securing his MLS rights should a return materialize. His best season came during RSL's 2009 MLS Cup-winning campaign, as he scored 12 goals and added four assists in 27 appearances.

That season, along with a call-up to the United States' World Cup squad, fueled a move to Championship side Nottingham Forest, where he has scored six goals in 25 appearances since signing with the club in December 2010. More recently, the 27-year-old spent time on loan with League Two's Gillingham, tallying one assist in seven games after joining in September.

Real Salt Lake Draw Colorado Rapids 1-1 in 2013 Home Opener

Real Salt Lake (1-1-1, 4 points, T- West) played Rocky Mountain Cup Presented by Mark Miller Subaru rival the Colorado Rapids (0-2-1, 1 point, T- West) to a 1-1 draw in its 2013 home opener at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday.

RSL controlled Saturday's match, holding a 70-30 possession edge and creating a number of good chances. Despite that, the Claret-and-Cobalt didn't score until the 80th minute, when FW Alvaro Saborio bagged one to tie the game at 1-1. Rookie FW Deshorn Brown had Colorado's goal, putting the Rapids up 1-0 in the 37th minute.

Real Salt Lake started the match strongly, registering its first chance of the game in just the third minute. Captain Kyle Beckerman had the look, hitting a shot from distance that Colorado GK Matt Pickens tapped over the bar.

Pickens went down with an injury just one minute later; breaking his left forearm after it collided with the head of RSL DF Kwame Watson-Siriboe. GK Clint Irwin came in for Pickens, subbing on in the sixth minute to make his MLS debut.

Colorado had the next chance, with Brown forcing RSL GK Nick Rimando into a save in the 24th minute. The sixth-overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Brown collected the ball on the left side before cutting along the endline and firing a close-range shot that Rimando parried away at the near post.

Brown put the Rapids on the board in the 37th minute. The Jamaican attacker stripped RSL DF Chris Schuler deep in the Claret-and-Cobalt's defensive third, running into the right side of the box before firing a low shot inside the far post from 15 yards out.

Brown nearly doubled Colorado's advantage in the 39th minute, collecting a through ball and running into the middle of the box for a 1-v-1 chance before firing a shot that Rimando stopped nicely.

RSL MF Luis Gil almost equalized in the 41st. The U.S. Under-20 international collected a MF Sebastian Velasquez pass at the top of the box, turning a firing a shot toward the top-left corner that Irwin made a diving stop on.

RSL had another look in the 44th, when Velasquez curled a Saborio lay off inches wide of the top-left corner from 15 yards out.

The Claret-and-Cobalt made one change at the break, bringing on MF Ned Grabavoy - who had missed RSL's first two matches while dealing with a family matter - for MF Khari Stephenson, who suffered a mild sprain to his left knee in the first half.

Grabavoy nearly had an assist in the 64th minute, getting to the endline on the left side and firing a cross through a goalmouth scrum to wide open DF Tony Beltran at the back post. Beltran looked poised to put the chance away, but his 15-yard shot was stoned by Irwin, who ran quickly off his line and parried the shot away.

Colorado had a golden chance on the counter in the 68th, when substitute MF Nick LaBrocca ran in on Rimando on a breakaway. The former Chivas USA player couldn't take advantage of the opportunity, hitting a weak shot right at Rimando, who held comfortably.

Rimando had a big save in the 78th minute. Colorado FW Tony Cascio slalomed through the RSL defense on the left side, firing a low shot from 10 yards that Rimando dove to parry away.

Saborio made Rimando's saves count when he equalized in the 80th minute. Gil started the play, picking up a loose ball on the edge of the area before finding substitute FW Joao Plata in the right side of the box. Plata turned and played Saborio through to the right edge of the six, allowing the Costa Rican international to slam a low shot home inside the far post.

Saborio had a good look at a winner in the 83rd. Substitute FW Devon Sandoval laid a lofted long ball off of his chest to an open Saborio at the top of the box, but the 30-year-old striker couldn't quite corral it, sending his half-volley well over the bar.

The Rapids had a final look on the counter in the 89th minute. FW Atiba Harris had the chance, dribbling into the left side of the box before firing a close-range shot that hit Rimando flush in the chest. LaBrocca followed up the shot, collecting the rebound and firing a low effort toward goal that Schuler blocked.

RSL will take a couple of days off before returning to training on Tuesday ahead of its March 23 road game at FC Dallas. The Claret-and-Cobalt next plays at home on March 30, when the team will take on Seattle Sounders FC at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Real Salt Lake Reserves Down Colorado Rapids Reserves 2-1

The Real Salt Lake Reserves (2-0-0, 6 points) moved to 2-0-0 in the Reserve League season on Saturday night, when they downed the Colorado Rapids Reserves (0-1-0, 0 points) 2-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Saturday's Reserve League match kicked off minutes after the conclusion of RSL's 1-1 MLS regular season draw against Colorado and drew a crowd of roughly 1,000 Claret-and-Cobalt faithful.

Real Salt Lake FW Devon Sandoval - who played 10 minutes in the first-team match on Saturday afternoon - scored RSL's first goal, nabbing the ball from the feet of Colorado GK Steward Ceus at the top of the box and calmly slotting home into an empty net. Sandoval now has two goals on the Reserve League season after scoring the lone goal in the RSL Reserves 1-0 win at San Jose on March 4.

The Claret-and-Cobalt went down a man in the 59th minute, when MF John Stertzer - who entered the match in the 45th minute for injured DF Carlos Salcedo - was shown a suspect straight red card for a tackle on Colorado DF Davy Armstrong.

RSL regular DF Nat Borchers subbed off in the 69th minute. Saturday's Reserve League match was Borchers' first game action of 2013 - the veteran center back is still recovering from offseason surgery on his right quad. Borchers was replaced by RSL GK Lalo Fernandez, who played forward with the Claret-and-Cobalt bench very thin due to injuries.

RSL-Arizona Academy MF Coco Navarro put the Claret-and-Cobalt up 2-0 in the 84th minute. FW Olmes Garcia started the play, picking up a ball at midfield and streaking down the center of the pitch before playing Navarro through on the right side. The 18-year-old Marquette University commit did the rest, dribbling into the right side of the area before firing his shot inside the far post.

Colorado MF Dillon Serna scored a screamer of a consolation goal in the 89th minute, picking up a loose corner kick 25 yards out and rifling a shot into the top-right corner.

The RSL Reserves next play on Sunday, March 31, when they'll take on the Seattle Sounders FC Reserves at 11:00 a.m. MT at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.

First-Half Goals from Findley & Gil Give RSL Victory

Real Salt Lake (2-2-1, 7 points, West 4th) got first-half goals from FW Robbie Findley and MF Luis Gil to down Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders FC (0-3-1, 1 point, West 9th) in front of a sold-out crowd at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night.

RSL completely dominated the match, outshooting Seattle 25-8, putting 10 shots on goal to Seattle's 4 and keeping the Sounders on their back foot throughout the 90 minutes.

Real Salt Lake came out of the gates firing, nearly going ahead in the fifth minute. MF Ned Grabavoy slipped Findley into the left side of the box and the speedy striker cut in on his right foot before firing a shot that nearly deflected off of a Seattle player and in.

RSL had a double chance in the seventh. Claret-and-Cobalt DF Abdoulie Mansally hit a fantastic early cross from the left to FW Devon Sandoval in the right side of the area, putting him in for a 1-v-1 chance that Sounders GK Michael Gspurning blocked. MF Sebastian Velasquez pounced on the rebound at the top of the 18, cutting in on his left foot before ripping a shot that Gspurning deflected out of bounds.

The Claret-and-Cobalt broke through in the eighth minute. A long RSL throw from the right corner started a goalmouth scramble, with Findley eventually pouncing on a Sandoval block just two yards from goal. Gspurning stopped Findley's first shot, but couldn't do anything about the rebound, with Findley toe-poking the ball in from two yards out. The goal was Findley's first of the year and his first with RSL since returning to the team this offseason after a two-year stint at English Championship club Nottingham Forest.

Unfortunately, Findley strained his left adductor during the goal play and had to be subbed off for FW Joao Plata in the 14th minute.

Gspurning stood on his head again in the 34th minute, miraculously turning away a RSL triple chance to keep it 1-0. Plata started the play, bringing the ball down on the left side and playing Sandoval through into the middle of the box. Sandoval's shot was blocked by an onrushing Gspurning; Gil picked up the rebound, firing a shot off a Seattle defender; Velasquez pounced on the loose ball, firing a shot toward the top corner that Gspurning deflected over the bar.

RSL scored on the ensuing corner kick, with Gil finishing off a pretty set play to put the Claret-and-Cobalt up 2-0. Velasquez rolled the corner from the right side along the end line to Grabavoy, who chipped the ball toward the top of the box with his first touch, allowing Gil to smash a long-distance header inside the far post.

Plata nearly made it 3-0 RSL in first-half stoppage time, running onto a long ball over the top of Seattle's back line and getting into the box before hitting a 1-v-1 shot that Gspurning saved.

Seattle had its first really good look immediately after Plata's chance, with FW Eddie Johnson collecting a long ball at the top of the box before dribbling into the left side of the area and hitting a low shot that RSL GK Nick Rimando kept out with a diving save.

The Sounders had the first chance of the second half, forcing Rimando into another diving stop in the 54th minute. MF Steve Zakuani crossed from the left wing to MF Brad Evans, who snapped a header from the middle of the box to the far post that Rimando stopped.

Gspurning came up big again in the 55th minute, stopping another Plata 1-v-1 chance. Sandoval created the opportunity, springing Plata in on the left side of the box with a neat flick from the top of the area.

Evans pulled one back for Seattle in the 57th minute. MF Mauro Rosales laid DF DeAndre Yedlin's cross off to Evans at the top of the box, with Evans ripping a deflected shot off the right post and into the back of the net.

RSL MF Javier Morales made his 2013 debut in the 62nd minute when he came on for Gil. Morales - who missed the Claret-and-Cobalt's first four matches while recovering from preseason knee surgery - was given a standing ovation from the sold-out Rio Tinto Stadium crowd when he entered the game.

Seattle had its best look at an equalizer in the 72nd minute. Johnson and substitute FW David Estrada both got on the end of a Yedlin ball at the left post, but neither really connected on a shot, allowing Rimando to pick up the loose ball to end the dangerous opportunity.

RSL was denied in its shout for a penalty in the 85th minute. Morales thought he had earned a spot kick after Seattle DF Jhon Kennedy Hurtado bodied him off the ball in the box, but referee Mark Geiger waved it away.

Real Salt Lake plays again on Monday, when it will host Brigham Young University in an exhibition match at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to MLS play next Saturday, April 6, taking on Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup rivals the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Real Salt Lake Falls 1-0 at Colorado Rapids

Real Salt Lake (2-3-1, 7 points, West #4) dropped the second leg of the 2013 Rocky Mountain Cup Presented by Mark Miller Subaru on Saturday night, falling 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids (1-3-2, 5 points, West #7) at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Real Salt Lake now trails Colorado by three points in the Rocky Mountain Cup standings with just one RMC game remaining. The Claret-and-Cobalt will need to beat the Rapids in Colorado on Aug. 3 in order to retain the Rocky Mountain Cup for a seventh-consecutive year.

Colorado MF Atiba Harris put the Rapids on top in the fifth minute. MF Nick LaBrocca started the play, crossing from the left side to FW Edson Buddle at the top of the six-yard-box. Buddle held the ball up and toe-poked it to Harris at the far post, setting up the former RSL man for a left-footed finish from close range.

RSL had its best chance at an equalizer just minutes after Harris's goal. Referee Chris Penso whistled Colorado MF Dillon Powers for a foul in the box on Claret-and-Cobalt captain Kyle Beckerman, giving the Utah side a penalty kick. FW Alvaro Saborio took the spot kick, but had his shot denied by Colorado GK Clint Irwin, who tipped Saborio's low drive to the right side off the post and out of play. The save moved Saborio to 12-for-13 all-time on penalty kicks in his RSL career.

Real Salt Lake continued pressing after Irwin's penalty save, registering a pair of chances in the 18th and 22nd minutes. FW Devon Sandoval had the first opportunity, heading a DF Tony Beltran cross at Irwin from eight yards out. Saborio had the second look, heading a corner kick wide of goal.

The game settled down after that, with neither side registering another opportunity until the 40th minute, when Harris nearly doubled Colorado's lead. Harris collected a long diagonal ball in the left side of the box, taking a touch toward goal before slamming a half-volley that RSL GK Nick Rimando saved nicely at the near post.

Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jason Kreis made a pair of changes at halftime, bringing MF Javier Morales on for MF Sebastian Velasquez and FW Olmes Garcia on for Sandoval.

Despite the changes, it was Colorado that came out of the locker room on the front foot, nearly scoring in the 49th minute. LaBrocca got on the end of a Buddle cross at the top of the box, hitting a volley just wide of the right post.

Saborio had chances in the 54th and 65th minutes. The first chance saw the Costa Rican international head a Morales corner kick wide of the mark; the second saw his long-distance drive parried out for a corner by a diving Irwin.

Colorado had another near miss in the 74th minute. Brown got on the end of DF Chris Klute's cross just inside the penalty spot and flicked a shot toward goal that flashed inches wide of the right post.

Rimando made a great save to keep RSL in the game in the 81st minute. LaBrocca played MF Jamie Smith through in the middle of the field, with the substitute MF running toward the top of the box before firing a right-footed shot that Rimando stopped with an acrobatic leap.

RSL pushed desperately for an equalizer in the game's final minutes. The Claret-and-Cobalt had a shout for a penalty in the 89th, when it appeared that Klute pulled Saborio down by the jersey inside the box.

Real Salt Lake had one final chance in the 93rd minute, when Beckerman crossed from the right wing to Saborio at the back post, only for the Costa Rican international's header to fly wide of the far post.

RSL's next match is next Saturday, April 13 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Claret-and-Cobalt will play three home games in a row following next week's match at BC Place.

Real Salt Lake Draw 1-1 at Vancouver

Real Salt Lake (2-3-2, 8 points, West #5) picked up a hard-earned road point on Saturday, tying Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-1 (2-2-2, 8 points, West #4) at BC Place.

RSL FW Olmes Garcia scored his first career MLS goal in the 66th minute to put the Claret-and-Cobalt ahead, curling an absolutely gorgeous 20-yard shot into the top right corner from the left side of the box. Vancouver FW Camilo equalized in the 84th, burying a penalty kick after RSL DF Nat Borchers was whistled for an innocuous hand ball in the box.

RSL started the match on the back foot, ceding a number of early opportunities. Vancouver had its first chance in the ninth minute, when DF Y.P. Lee uncorked a blast from the right side of the box toward the far post that RSL GK Nick Rimando parried out for a corner kick.

Rimando came up huge on the ensuing corner, making a double save on Camilo before the Brazilian attacker fired over from close range. Camilo got on the end of Vancouver DF Brad Rusin's header eight yards out, heading shot on goal that Rimando saved. Camilo picked up the rebound, hitting a shot that Rimando stopped before picking up another rebound and sending his third effort over the bar.

Rimando had another good stop on Camilo in the 19th minute, parrying the Brazilian's 20-yard curling free kick over the bar and out of danger. Rimando turned away Camilo yet again in the 26th, diving to his left to push a low long-range effort around the post.

Real Salt Lake was dealt a blow in the 31st minute, when MF Kyle Beckerman had to be subbed off due to a slight rib injury. He was replaced by MF Yordany Alvarez, who filled in admirably for the Claret-and-Cobalt captain.

RSL had its first good move of the game in the 35th minute, when FW Joao Plata had a goal called back for offside.

RSL's next chance came in the 50th minute. After some nice combination play in the area, Plata hit a short cross from the left side of the box to FW Alvaro Saborio at the near post, with the Costa Rican international toe-poking his close-range effort off of a Vancouver player and out for a corner kick.

Rimando made another huge save in the 55th minute. Vancouver MF Nigel Reo-Coker collected a Rimando punch near the top of the box, slamming a shot on goal that Rimando made a very nice diving stop on.

Garcia - who subbed on for Plata in the 55th - had a good look at goal in the 61st. Morales got to the end line in the right side of the box, cutting the ball back to the center for Garcia, who stung Vancouver GK Joe Cannon's gloves with a hard 15-yarder.

Garcia put RSL ahead with a marvelous goal in the 66th. The 20-year-old Colombian collected a Morales pass on the left wing, cutting in on his right foot before curling a delectable 20-yard effort inside the far post. The world-class goal was Garcia's first in MLS after signing with the Claret-and-Cobalt this preseason.

Vancouver pressed hard for an equalizer following Garcia's goal, eventually finding it in the 84th minute. Referee Drew Fischer whistled Borchers for a hand ball in the box in the 83rd after the veteran center back slipped in the box and fell on the ball. Camilo made no mistake with the spot kick, sending Rimando the wrong way and burying the penalty off the left post and into the back of the net.

RSL had a great chance to break the tie late in second half stoppage time. Saborio earned a corner kick with some hard work in Vancouver's box and Borchers nearly buried it, heading MF Luis Gil's set piece toward the top left corner before Cannon tipped it over the bar.

The Real Salt Lake Reserves will play the Vancouver Reserves on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. MT at UBC Thunderbirds Stadium.

RSL will return to MLS action next Saturday, April 20, when it will host Chivas USA at Rio Tinto Stadium. A limited amount of tickets are available for the match and can be purchased at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office, online at www.RealSaltLake.com/tickets or over the phone at 801-727-2700.

Real Salt Lake Match Notes - RSL 1-1 VAN

    * Saturday's result breaks Real Salt Lake's three-game road losing streak. After beating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium in the season opener on March 3, the Claret-and-Cobalt lost 1-0 at D.C. United on March 9, 2-0 at FC Dallas on March 23 and 1-0 at the Colorado Rapids on April 6.

    * Saturday's match was RSL's fifth road game in its first seven matches. The Claret-and-Cobalt will now play seven of its next 10 matches at home in the friendly confines of Rio Tinto Stadium.

    * RSL FW Olmes Garcia's 66th minute goal was his first in MLS after signing a five-year deal with the Claret-and-Cobalt in the preseason. Garcia was shown a yellow card for removing his shirt while celebrating the goal. The 20-year-old Colombian had a picture of a deceased friend on his undershirt.

    * Garcia's goal broke RSL's 275-minute road scoreless streak. The Claret-and-Cobalt hadn't scored on the road since FW Alvaro Saborio found the back of the net in the 85th minute of RSL's 2-0 season opening win at San Jose on March 3.

    * RSL MF Javier Morales started and played 79 minutes on Saturday. It was Morales's first start of the season. The Argentine playmaker missed RSL's first four games and came off the bench as a second half sub in its last two while recovering from preseason knee surgery.

    * RSL MF Kyle Beckerman had to be subbed off in the 31st minute due to a slight rib injury. Beckerman left training early on Friday due to the injury.

    Real Salt Lake wins

Real Salt Lake (3-3-2, 11 points, West #2) started its three-game home stand on the right foot on Saturday night, getting a goal from MF Javier Morales to beat Chivas USA (3-3-1, 10 points, West #3) 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Morales scored the game's lone goal in the 53rd minute, heading a FW Alvaro Saborio cross inside the far post from just inside the penalty spot. RSL GK Nick Rimando continued his strong start to the season on Saturday night, stopping a penalty kick in the first half and making five saves total to register his second clean sheet of the season.

RSL came out of the gates firing, nearly going ahead in the sixth minute when FW Olmes Garcia hit the crossbar. The 20-year-old Colombian - who was making his first MLS start - hit a shot from just outside the 18 that deflected off of a defender, sailed over Chivas GK Dan Kennedy and bounced off the bar.

Garcia was at the heart of another chance just a minute later, collecting Morales's through ball on the right wing before crossing to open MF Ned Grabavoy at the back post for a header that missed the frame.

RSL had two more good looks in the 15th and 16th minutes. Saborio had the first chance, collecting a Morales ball in the left side of the area before sending a chip shot over Kennedy and wide of the far post. Kennedy made a big stop on RSL MF Luis Gil one minute later; diving to the ground to block the U.S. Under-20 international's sliding 15-yarder.

The Claret-and-Cobalt had another great look in the 32nd minute. Garcia created the chance, getting behind the Chivas defense on the left side before squaring a ball to Saborio at the top of the box. The Costa Rican international quickly hit a shot toward goal, only for it to be blocked by sliding Chivas USA DF Mario de Luna.

The game turned in the 34th minute, when referee Jorge Gonzales whistled Grabavoy for a handball inside the box, giving Chivas USA a penalty kick. As he's so done has over the years, Rimando saved the day for RSL, reading Chivas USA MF Edgar Mejia like a book before diving to his left to block the spot kick. RSL's defense stood strong in the ensuing goalmouth scramble, blocking no less than three shots from inside eight yards to turn Chivas away.

The Goats had another good look in first half stoppage time. Rookie MF Carlos Alvarez picked up a ball in the left side of the box, rifling a low shot from 15 yards inches wide of the far post.

Like the team did in the first half, RSL came out of the break firing, with Garcia hitting the crossbar for a second time in the 52nd minute. Garcia blazed past Chivas USA DF Bobby Burling to collect a long, bouncing ball in the right side of the box before chipping a 12-yard effort over Kennedy's outstretched arms and off the bar near the far post.

RSL finally found pay dirt in the 53rd minute. Morales started the play, picking up a loose ball near midfield and quickly finding a teammate. The ball eventually made its way to Garcia, who found Saborio in the right side of the area with a neat through ball. Saborio squared up and crossed to the open Morales just inside the penalty spot, allowing the Argentine playmaker - so often the RSL player delivering crosses - to head home inside the left bar.

Morales nearly doubled RSL's advantage 10 minutes later, collecting a lay off from Gil outside the 18 on the right side and chipping a curler that glanced off the top of the far post.

Saborio and Morales had a chance each in the 87th and 88th minutes. Saborio had the first opportunity, running onto Morales's through ball in the middle of the attacking third before rolling a shot just wide of the left post from a yard outside the box. Morales forced Kennedy into a fine save one minute later, curling a 25-yard free kick toward the top left corner that the Chivas 'keeper tipped over the bar.

Chivas went down to 10 men when Mejia was shown a straight red card for an off the ball foul on Grabavoy in second half stoppage time.

RSL will return to action on Monday night, when it will host USL Pro club Phoenix FC at Rio Tinto Stadium in MLS Reserve League action. Tickets to Monday's Phoenix FC match - part of this year's groundbreaking partnership between MLS and USL Pro - are $8 for RSL Pride Season Ticket Holders and $12 for the general public. Real Salt Lake Beat By La Galaxy

The LA Galaxy were without several of their top veteran players, but that proved to be no problem for the back-to-back defending MLS Cup championsas they cruised to a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night.

Mike Magee and rookie Charlie Rugg both found the back of the net against RSL inside the opening 13 minutes and untested goalkeeper Brian Rowe came up big on a few occasions in his pro debut to make sure the young Galaxy side went back home with all three points. The win moved LA to 4-1-2 on the year and dropped Real Salt Lake to 3-4-2.

Both teams played without some of their top players. The Galaxy were missing Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane, Todd Dunivant and Carlo Cudicini while RSL lost forwards Alvaro Saborio and Robbie Findley to injuries sustained during pre-game warm-ups

Even without their key veterans, LA did not seem to miss a beat.Magee beat Tony Bletran to a spot just outside the six-yard box and deftly headed a ball sent in from a free kick by Juninho past a helpless Nick Rimando in the sixth minute and thingsonly got better from there for the visitors.

In the 13th minute, Rugg doubled the defending champs' lead. After some quality hold-up play from Marcelo Sarvas, the midfielder sent the ball out to the right side to Hector Jimenez, who hit a hard one-time bullet across the middle to a streaking Rugg. The 22-year-old, who was making his pro debut, outraced Beltran to the ball and hammered home the goal from close range

Giving a team that defends as well as the Galaxy a two-goal lead pretty much decided the game before the quarter-hour mark, as LA put as many as seven and eight men back in the box to defend.

RSL were able to possess the ball for long stretches but they were unable to break down the compact and well-positioned Galaxy defense, settling instead for shots from distance that sporadically challenged Rowe.

As the match played out, the stats were heavily in RSL's favor but the Galaxy protected their lead well thanks to the defense of the likes of Sean Franklin and Omar Gonzalez. On the few occasions that Real Salt Lake did pose a threat, poor finishing usually cost the hosts.

Opta Chalkboard: Mike Magee contributes on both sides off the ball to help lead Galaxy to victory

The Galaxy did receive a bit of bad news early in the second half, as promising youngster Jack McBean left the match in the 52nd minute with what appeared to be an injury to his collarbone or shoulder.

The Galaxy return to the Home Depot Center to face the Houston Dynamo next Sunday. RSL, meanwhile, will play the last match of their three-game homestand next Saturday against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Real Salt Lake Vanquishes Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0

Real Salt Lake (4-4-2, 14 points, T-2 in West) closed out its three-game home stand in style on Saturday night, getting second half goals from MF's Luis Gil and Javier Morales to beat Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2-4-3, 9 points, #8 in West) 2-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Gil gave RSL the lead in the 47th minute, finishing off a textbook counterattack that began with a goal kick from Claret-and-Cobalt GK Nick Rimando. Morales doubled RSL's lead in the 71st, putting the exclamation mark on a nice buildup with a slotted finish from 12 yards out. FW Joao Plata assisted on both plays, giving him four helpers on the season, the most in MLS.

Real Salt Lake controlled the match from the start, setting the tempo and controlling possession throughout the first 45 minutes. The Utah side couldn't quite pick out the final ball, however, and struggled to create many clear-cut opportunities in the opening frame.

RSL's best first half chance came in the 39th minute, when DF Chris Schuler nodded a Morales corner kick just wide of the far post from six yards out in the left side of the area.

Oddly enough considering its first half possession advantage, RSL's opener came on a counterattack. Rimando started the play, rifling a goal kick to Plata on the right side. The Ecuadorian attacker collected the ball and took one touch before curling an inch-perfect cross to Gil in the middle. The U.S. Under-20 international did the rest, padding his header past onrushing Vancouver GK Joe Cannon, off of the right post and into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, Gil suffered a right ankle contusion on the play and had to be taken off due to the injury seven minutes later.

Vancouver livened up a bit after falling behind, holding more of the ball and creating a couple of decent looks at an equalizer.

Whitecaps FC's first good look came in the 59th minute, FW Camilo curled a teasing effort just over the bar after picking up a loose corner kick 15 yards out. Vancouver had an even better opportunity in the 62nd minute. FW Corey Hertzog ran onto a long ball behind the RSL defense on the right side and beat Rimando with a shot from six yards only for RSL DF Nat Borchers to slide in and heroically clear the ball off the line.

Morales doubled RSL's lead in the 72nd minute. The Argentine playmaker started the play, chipping a ball from the center circle to substitute MF Sebastian Velasquez on the right side. Velasquez cut in and played a fine left-footed pass to Plata on the right side, allowing the diminutive attacker to square a ball to Morales for a slotted finish from just to the right of the penalty spot.

Real Salt Lake saw out the rest of the match with relative ease. The Claret-and-Cobalt will play two games at Eastern Conference opponents next week, taking on the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, May 8 before heading north of the border to take on the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo on Saturday, May 11.

Real Salt Lake Sends GK Jeff Attinella on Short-Term Loan to Ft. Lauderdale Strikers

Real Salt Lake on Wednesday sent GK Jeff Attinella on a short-term loan to the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers of the second-division North American Soccer League (NASL).

Signed by Real Salt Lake in December 2012, the 24-year-old Attinella has not appeared in any of RSL's first-team matches this year. The third-year pro has seen action in the Reserve League, allowing just one goal in 135 minutes of action across three games.

Attinella spent the first two years of his professional career in NASL with the Tampa Bay Rowdies, which he helped lead to the 2012 NASL title. The Clearwater, Fla. native is the second RSL player to be sent on loan to a NASL side in the last 10 days; MF Enzo Martinez was sent on-loan to the Carolina RailHawks on April 30.

Currently in seventh place in the NASL, the Strikers have three remaining league games in May.

RSL still has three goalkeepers on its active roster in Nick Rimando, Josh Saunders and Lalo Fernandez.

Real Salt Lake will return to action on Wednesday, when it will take on the New England Revolution at 6:00 p.m. MT at Gillette Stadium. The Claret-and-Cobalt will play again on Saturday, traveling north of the border to take on the Montreal Impact at 12:00 p.m. MT at Stade Saputo. Both Wednesday's and Saturday's games will be broadcast live on CW30, ESPN700 AM and 102.3 La Gran D FM/1600AM.

Real Salt Lake Downs New England 2-1 in Dramatic Fashion

Real Salt Lake (5-4-2, 17 points, West #2) opened its three-game road trip in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes and getting a stoppage time penalty kick save from GK Nick Rimando to down the New England Revolution (2-4-3, 9 points, East #8) 2-1 at Gillette Stadium.

New England MF Ryan Guy opened the scoring in the 51st minute, volleying a 15-yard shot inside the right post to put the Revs on top. RSL responded well after falling behind, getting an equalizer from first-time scorer FW Devon Sandoval in the 77th minute and a winner from FW Olmes Garcia in the 89th.

Rimando secured all three points in second half stoppage time, making a heroic penalty kick stop on Revolution FW Saer Sene after RSL DF Carlos Salcedo was whistled for a handball in the box and shown a second yellow card to drop the Claret-and-Cobalt down to 10 men. Rimando is now 19-for-60 (31.67 percent) against regular season penalty kicks, the best such mark in MLS history.

The first half was relatively quiet, with the majority of the action coming in the opening 15 minutes. New England had the half's best chance in the sixth minute. FW Jerry Bengston got behind the RSL defense in the left side of the box but couldn't get a shot off; instead laying the ball off after Rimando came off the line to turn him around. MF Diego ***undez had a good look at the pass but let the ball roll to MF Lee Nguyen, who eventually got it back to Bengston for a close-range effort that was deflected out for a corner kick.

RSL had half chances in the 11th minutes and 29th minutes. MF Luis Gil had the first look, collecting a ball on the left side before cutting in on his right foot and firing a 20-yard shot just over the bar at the far post. MF Ned Grabavoy had the second opportunity, volleying DF Tony Beltran's cross just over the bar from 15 yards.

Things picked up in the second half, with Rimando making a big save to keep New England off the board in the 48th minute. ***undez had the chance, forcing Rimando into a fine diving stop with a low 15-yard smash that looked ticketed for the lower right corner.

The Revs took the lead three minutes later. MF Kelyn Rowe took advantage of a botched RSL clearance on the right wing, carrying the ball to the end line and crossing to Guy in the middle. Guy made no mistake with the chance, running onto Rowe's lofted ball and nailing a right-footed volley inside the near post from 15 yards out.

Real Salt Lake responded well after conceding, registering decent looks in the 58th and 73rd minutes before nearly equalizing in the 76th. Grabavoy started the play, wriggling free on the left flank and lofting a cross to the middle. Sandoval got on the end of it, heading the ball toward the lower left corner only for New England GK Bobby Shuttleworth to come up with a solid diving stop.

Sandoval made amends one minute later, outmuscling a Revs player to pounce on a rebound and finish for his first career MLS goal. Substitute MF Sebastian Velasquez collected a Grabavoy pass in the left side of the box and fired a shot on goal that Shuttleworth parried away. Sandoval somehow got around his mark to get on the rebound, sliding forwards and burying the five-yarder to tie the game 1-1.

Garcia scored the dramatic winner in the 89th minute. MF Javier Morales lofted a high corner kick to MF Kyle Beckerman at the top of the box, with the Claret-and-Cobalt captain smashing a volley out of the air and on goal. Shuttleworth made an acrobatic stop on Beckerman's rip, but couldn't do anything about Garcia's follow up effort, with the 20-year-old Colombian slipping free from his man and sliding to his right to clinically finish inside the near post from 12 yards out.

Garcia's goal wasn't the end of the drama, however. Referee Jose Carlos Rivero inserted himself into the equation in the 90th minute, when he gave New England a penalty kick after whistling RSL for a handball in the box. The questionable call was made even more controversial when Rivero misidentified Salcedo as the player who handled the ball and sent him off with a second yellow card.

Thankfully for RSL, Rimando - as he's done so many times throughout his career - came up huge on the ensuing spot kick, diving to his right to block Sene's penalty. Beckerman cleaned up after Rimando, beating Sene to the ball and clearing it out for a corner kick.

Real Salt Lake has a quick turnaround ahead of its next match, traveling to Canada on Thursday ahead of Saturday's MLS contest against the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo.

Real Salt Lake Match Notes - RSL 2-1 NE

    - RSL GK Nick Rimando is now 19-for-60 against regular season penalty kicks in his illustrious career. Rimando's 31.67 save percentage on regular season penalty kicks is the best such mark in league history. The early Goalkeeper of the Year candidate is 2-for-3 on penalty kicks in 2013, allowing a successful PK in RSL's 1-1 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 13 and stopping a spot kick in the Claret-and-Cobalt's 1-0 home win over Chivas USA on April 20.

    - Rookie RSL FW Devon Sandoval's 77th minute goal was the first goal of his career. The 29th overall pick in this January's MLS SuperDraft, Sandoval started and played all 90 minutes on Wednesday for his eighth appearance and fourth start of the season.

    - RSL DF Carlos Salcedo made his first career start on Wednesday night, making it into second half stoppage time before being sent off due to a controversial second yellow card. The 19-year-old Salcedo - who became the first Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy product to play in a MLS match when he came on as a late game sub in Saturday's home win over Vancouver - is the first ever RSL-AZ product to start a MLS match. RSL will appeal Salcedo's second yellow card.

    - Wednesday's victory was RSL's first comeback road win since March 31, 2012, when the Claret-and-Cobalt got late goals from MF Kyle Beckerman and former RSL MF Jonny Steele to beat the Portland Timbers 3-2 at JELD-WEN Field.

    - Wednesday's victory is RSL's first road win since March 3, when it beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium in the 2013 season opener. The Claret-and-Cobalt is now 2-3-1 on the road this season.

Real Salt Lake Concedes Two Late Goals to Fall 3-2 at Montreal Impact

Real Salt Lake (5-5-2, 17 points, West #2) lost a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, giving up two late goals to fall 3-2 to the Montreal Impact (6-2-2, 20 points, East T-2) at Stade Saputo.

Captain Kyle Beckerman put RSL up 2-1 with a 77th minute goal, but the Claret-and-Cobalt couldn't hold the lead, with Montreal FW Marco Di Vaio equalizing from an offside position in the 80th minute before Impact DF Matteo Ferrari found the winner in the 93rd.

RSL - which beat the New England Revolution 2-1 on Wednesday night - is 1-1-0 through the first two games of its three-game road trip. The Claret-and-Cobalt will close the trip next Sunday, May 19, when it will take on Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center.

Real Salt Lake began the game brightly, registering chances in the third and sixth minutes before going ahead through a Ferrari own goal in the seventh. DF Lovel Palmer created the opportunity, collecting a Beckerman through ball on the right flank before ripping a long-range shot that deflected off of Ferrari inside the box and into the back of the net.

RSL nearly made it 2-0 in the 15th minute. MF Sebastian Velasquez danced around a few Montreal defenders in the right side of the box, eventually hitting a low cross to the near post that slipped into the middle of the area. FW Olmes Garcia pounced on the loose ball, firing a right-footed shot with his first touch that somehow deflected off of the leg of Montreal GK Troy Perkins and out for a corner kick.

The game stayed wide open throughout, with Montreal getting a good look at an equalizer in the 17th. MF Felipe found MF Justin Mapp wide open in the right side of the area but Mapp - who had RSL GK Nick Rimando caught off his line - cut back into traffic on his left instead of shooting with his right and saw his shot blocked.

Real Salt Lake had another chance in the 24th minute. MF Javier Morales slipped FW Devon Sandoval into the right side of the area, but the rookie striker couldn't keep his shot on frame, driving his effort over the bar from 15 yards out.

Felipe brought the Impact level in the 39th minute. Mapp collected a DF Jeb Brovsky through ball on the right wing, racing forward for a couple of touches before hitting a cross into the middle. Felipe made a hard-charging run through the box to get to the ball, slotting home inside the far post from eight yards with his first touch.

Felipe's equalizer took the sides into halftime. Like it did in the first, RSL started the second half well, with Morales forcing Perkins into a good stop with a shot from distance in the 47th before Beckerman ripped a 25-yarder inches wide of the right post in the 48th.

Montreal hit back with an opportunity of its own in the 50th minute. FW Andrew Wenger got free on the right wing, dribbling into the box before cutting back on his left foot and firing a low shot that a diving Rimando held.

The match settled down after that, with both sides battling in the midfield and struggling to create chances until Beckerman reclaimed the lead for RSL in the 77th. The goal came off of a Morales corner kick, with Garcia flicking a header from the near post to DF Chris Schuler at the penalty spot. The ball eventually made its way to Beckerman left of the spot, with the Claret-and-Cobalt captain toe-poking a 10-yarder past Perkins and inside the near post.

Unfortunately, RSL's lead was short-lived, as Di Vaio controversially equalized just three minutes after Beckerman's goal. DF Maxim Tissot started the play, dribbling through the middle of the RSL defense before finding Wenger at the top of the box. The 2012 MLS SuperDraft No. 1 pick flicked Di Vaio through in the left side of the box for a scuffed finish off the near post and in. Replays showed that Di Vaio was in an offside position when Wenger played him through.

RSL had a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the 85th minute. Substitute FW Joao Plata - who had only come on seconds earlier - was played behind the Montreal defense by Javier Morales, but the Ecuadorian couldn't beat Perkins, who came well off of his line to deny Plata's shot from 15 yards.

That miss would come back to haunt RSL in the 93rd minute, when substitute MF Blake Smith's corner kick squeaked through multiple players before falling to Ferrari for a solid right-footed finish from just inside the spot.

Real Salt Lake will now return to Utah, where it will put in a full week of training ahead of next Sunday's match at Western Conference foe Chivas USA.

Real Salt Lake Match Notes - RSL 2-3 MTL

    - Real Salt Lake's starting back line of DF Chris Wingert, DF Kwame Watson-Siriboe, DF Chris Schuler and DF Lovel Palmer had never played a match together before Saturday's game. Regular RSL DF Tony Beltran was rested on Saturday and did not start while regular DF Nat Borchers missed the match due to illness.

    - Real Salt Lake was also without injured FW's Alvaro Saborio and Robbie Findley on Saturday. The starting striker pair of FW Olmes Garcia and FW Devon Sandoval was the ninth starting forward pair that RSL has used in nine games this season.

    - Real Salt Lake MF Luis Gil did not play on Saturday. Gil, who is nursing a bit of a right ankle injury, had started all 11 have RSL's matches prior to Saturday's loss. RSL DF Chris Schuler is now the only Claret-and-Cobalt player to start/feature in all 12 of the Utah side's MLS matches this year.

    - Real Salt Lake DF Kwame Watson-Siriboe returned to the 18 on Saturday after missing RSL's last two matches while attending to a family matter. The fourth-year center back went all 90 minutes for the Claret-and-Cobalt on Saturday.

    - Before Saturday's game, the last time that Real Salt Lake conceded three goals or more was on July 14, 2012, when the 10-man Claret-and-Cobalt lost 5-0 at the San Jose Earthquakes. Coincidentally, Allen Chapman was the head referee in both matches.

Saborio Scores in Return from Injury, but RSL Can't Hold On for Win

Real Salt Lake (6-5-3, 21 points, West #3) couldn't hold on against the Chicago Fire (2-7-2, 8 points, East #8) on Saturday night, giving up an 84th minute equalizer to tie the Eastern Conference side 1-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

RSL FW Alvaro Saborio put the Claret-and-Cobalt ahead in the 78th minute. The Costa Rican international - who came off the bench in the 62nd after missing the last five games due to injury - rose above two defenders to head MF Ned Grabavoy's cross past Fire GK Sean Johnson and inside the far post. Unfortunately for RSL, substitute FW Quincy Amarikwa equalized six minutes later, acrobatically poking a flicked header off of a long throw in home from close range.

Real Salt Lake dominated the match, holding a 68-32 percent possession advantage and outshooting the Fire 20-12. Johnson kept the Men-in-Red in the game, making eight saves - several of them spectacular - to hold RSL to just one goal.

RSL had its first chance of the match in the 22nd minute. Grabavoy ran onto a ball in the right side of the area, playing a back heel pass to RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman at the top of the 18. Beckerman hit a hard right-footed shot toward the left post, but Johnson was all over it.

Beckerman had another look one minute later, curling a 25-yard effort just wide of the left post.

RSL continued pressing, registering chances in the 28th and 29th minutes. FW Joao Plata had the first opportunity, collecting a MF Javier Morales through ball just left of center before firing a 30-yard shot that Johnson parried out for a corner. Plata created the second chance, curling a cross in from the left wing that Grabavoy headed on target from the near post for another Johnson save.

Johnson came up big again in the 32nd minute. RSL FW Robbie Findley collected a ball on the right flank, cutting in on his left foot before curling a 20-yarder toward the far post that Johnson tipped wide.

The Fire had its first good look in the 36th minute. MF Joel Lindpere collected a FW Patrick Nyarko pass in the left side of the box, running onto the ball and firing a 15-yard effort just high and wide of RSL GK Nick Rimando's net.

Nyarko was at the center of another opportunity in the 39th minute. The Ghanaian attacker stripped Morales in RSL's defensive third, dribbling into the box before hitting a 10-yard shot that RSL DF Carlos Salcedo blocked nicely.

RSL started the second half strongly, nearly going ahead in the 50th minute. Plata crossed from the left corner, lofting his ball over a Fire player and to an open Findley at the top of the six. Unfortunately, Findley couldn't keep his header on target, nodding the cross just wide of the left post.

Johnson made one of his best saves of the night in the 57th minute. RSL DF Chris Wingert ran onto a layoff 25 yards from goal, ripping a low left footer with his first touch. The ball looked ticketed for the back of the net, but Johnson had other ideas, diving to his right to parry the ball out for a corner.

Johnson topped his stop on Wingert in the 76th minute, cruelly denying a Morales free kick to keep the game level. RSL's Argentine playmaker stepped to a dead ball just outside the 18 on the left side, curling a right-footed beauty that Johnson somehow got to and miraculously tipped off the crossbar.

RSL finally broke through in the 78th minute, going ahead through Saborio. Substitute MF Sebastian Velasquez started the play, dribbling into the left side of the area before slipping Grabavoy through on the outside. The Chicago-area native served a perfect ball with his first touch, curling a cross into the middle that Saborio headed home powerfully.

Amarikwa equalized for Chicago six minutes later. DF Jalil Anibaba launched a long throw into the box from the right side. DF Austin Berry got on the end of it in in the right side of the area, flicking the ball toward goal to allow Amarikwa to jump up and acrobatically finish past Rimando.

RSL pushed for a winner in the final minutes, but failed to create any true clear cut opportunities.

The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to action on Tuesday, when it will begin its run in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a third-round match against the NASL Atlanta Silverbacks at 7:30 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL will return to league play next Saturday, June 1, when it will host the San Jose Earthquakes at 7:30 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium.

RSL Scores Three in First Half to Cruise to 3-0 Win

Real Salt Lake (7-5-3, 24 points, West #2) extended its run of hot form on Saturday night, getting three first half goals to cruise to a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes (3-5-6, 15 points, West #8) at Rio Tinto Stadium.

MF Javier Morales, MF Ned Grabavoy and FW Robbie Findley scored for RSL, which moved into sole possession of second-place in the Western Conference with Saturday's win. The Claret-and-Cobalt is now 5-1-1 in its last seven matches across all competitions.

Morales opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Findley collected a ball on the right flank and ran in on goal, firing a 10-yard shot off of diving San Jose GK Jon Busch. Morales pounced on the rebound, calmly slotting his eight-yard effort inside the left post to give RSL the early lead.

The Claret-and-Cobalt continued pressing after scoring the opener, controlling possession and keeping San Jose in its own half. The nonstop pressure came to a head in the 33rd minute, with Grabavoy scoring a fine goal to double RSL's advantage. Findley again started the play, finding Morales on the right wing with a through ball. The Argentine playmaker curled a low cross to the middle toward FW Joao Plata, who brilliantly let the ball through to Grabavoy at the back post. The former 'Quake did the rest, running onto Plata's dummy and blasting a 15-yarder into the top-right corner from the left side.

Findley made it 3-0 just five minutes later. Plata got to the end line on the left side, hitting a low cross into the middle that a San Jose player cleared right to Findley in the left side of the area. The 27-year-old speedster controlled the ball nicely, taking one touch before curling a low, right-footed laser past a diving Busch and inside the far post from 15 out.

Shell-shocked, San Jose Head Coach Frank Yallop made two changes in the 40th minute, bringing FW Steven Lenhart on for MF Sam Cronin and MF Rafael Baca in for MF Adam Jahn.

The changes paid minor dividends in the opening minutes of the second half, with San Jose controlling stretches of the game and registering a couple of decent looks on goal. The 'Quakes first good chance came in the 58th minute, when MF Marvin Chavez unleashed a long-range rocket that RSL GK Nick Rimando parried away. San Jose DF Steven Beitashour latched onto the rebound just outside the six, but hit his right footed shot over the bar.

Rimando made another good stop in the 65th minute. 2012 MLS Golden Boot winner FW Chris Wondolowski collected a Baca pass in the right side of the box, firing a low 10-yarder to the near post that Rimando parried out for a corner.

Grabavoy had a half chance in the 68th and San Jose had another decent look in the 74th. Lenhart collected a loose cross in the right side of the box and hit a side volley toward the near post that Rimando punched away nicely.

RSL and the 'Quakes will meet again on Sunday in MLS Reserve League action, with the Real Salt Lake Reserves taking on the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves at 11:00 a.m. MT at America First Field in Sandy. The match is open to the public and free to attend.

The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to MLS action next Saturday, June 8, when it will take on the LA Galaxy at 7:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL will host the Charleston Battery in the fourth-round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Real Salt Lake Scores Two Late Goals to Down LA Galaxy 3-1

Real Salt Lake (8-5-3, 27 points, West #2) extended its unbeaten streak to five games across all competitions on Saturday night, getting a late brace from FW Olmes Garcia to beat the LA Galaxy (6-6-2, 20 points, West #5) 3-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Garcia blew things open in the final 10 minutes, putting RSL up 2-1 with a fine headed goal in the 84th minute before scoring the Claret-and-Cobalt's third goal to ice the game in second half stoppage time. Real Salt Lake MF Khari Stephenson opened the scoring in the 44th minute only for LA FW Landon Donovan to equalize in first half stoppage time.

Real Salt Lake is now 6-1-1 across all competitions since losing 2-0 to LA at Rio Tinto Stadium on April 27. The Claret-and-Cobalt is now just one point back of Western Conference foe FC Dallas in the Supporters' Shield race and is third in MLS in points per game, trailing only the Montreal Impact and Dallas.

RSL controlled most of Saturday's match, outshooting LA 17-8 and holding a 60.1-39.9 percent possession advantage over the Galaxy. The Utah side started brightly, registering the first chance of the game in the fifth minute. MF Javier Morales slipped FW Joao Plata through in the left side of the box, allowing the diminutive attacker to fire a 10-yard effort on frame that LA GK Brian Rowe blocked.

The Claret-and-Cobalt had another decent look in the 22nd minute. MF Ned Grabavoy collected a ball near the top of the box and laid a pass back to Stephenson, who rifled a shot just over the bar from 25 yards out.

Stephenson came even closer to giving RSL the lead in the 26th, ripping a free kick off the post from 30 yards out. Grabavoy touched the dead ball to the powerful Jamaican, who ran onto it in the middle of LA's defensive third and ripped a low right-footer past Rowe and off the inside of the left post.

LA rattled the woodwork just three minutes later. FW Jose Villarreal collected a ball on the break and blasted a 30-yard left-footer over RSL GK Nick Rimando and off the bar.

Villarreal had another chance in the 37th minute. The U.S. Under-20 international stepped to a LA free kick just outside the arc, curling a left-footer toward the top left corner that Rimando parried away nicely.

Stephenson put RSL on top in the 44th minute, collecting a FW Robbie Findley pass from the left wing in the middle and blasting a low right-footer toward the left post. Rowe got a hand to the 25-yarder but couldn't keep it out, palming the ball inside the left side netting as the Claret-and-Cobalt went up 1-0.

Unfortunately, RSL couldn't see out the half, giving up an equalizer deep into stoppage time. Donovan scored for LA, collecting the ball just inside the right side of the 18 after an unlucky bounce off of RSL DF Nat Borchers and slamming a half-volley inside the far post to tie the game 1-1.

The second half started quietly, with neither side registering a chance until RSL had a decent look in the 59th minute. Findley had the opportunity, collecting a long ball in the left side of the box and cutting in on his right foot before hitting a 15-yarder that Rowe saved.

RSL had another opportunity in the 64th. Garcia - who came in for Findley in the 61st minute - played a neat through ball from the top of the box to Morales in the right side of the area, setting up the Argentine playmaker for a good look at goal. Unfortunately, Morales couldn't take advantage, slipping slightly before hitting a shot wide of the near post.

LA had its best chance of the second half in the 81st minute. Substitute MF Robbie Rogers got to the end line in the left side of the box, hitting a low left-footed ball across the face of goal. Donovan got an outstretched foot to the ball, but couldn't quite keep his shot on frame, sending the difficult chance wide of the right post.

Garcia gave RSL the lead in the 84th minute. RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman laid a ball to Morales on the left wing, allowing him to curl a cross into the middle. Garcia used his strength to muscle past a LA defender and get on the end of it, flicking his header inside the right post to put the Claret-and-Cobalt up 2-1.

Garcia killed the game off in the 92nd minute. Substitute FW Devon Sandoval started the play, finding Morales in the middle of the field on the break. Morales quickly played Garcia through, slipping the 20-year-old Colombian behind the LA defense with a marvelous through ball. Garcia did the rest, dribbling into the box and putting his shot through Rowe's legs to give RSL the 3-1 lead.

RSL will return to action on Wednesday, when it will host the USL Pro Charleston Battery in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round. Tickets to Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. kickoff are still available and can be purchased at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office, online at www.RealSaltLake.com/Tickets or over the phone at 801-727-2700. The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to MLS action on June 22, when it will host Seattle Sounders FC at 7:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Real Salt Lake Rolls over Seattle Sounders FC 2-0

Real Salt Lake (9-5-3, 30 points, West #1) gained sole possession of the Supporters' Shield lead on Saturday night, beating Seattle Sounders FC (6-5-3, 21 points, West #6) 2-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium to move past FC Dallas and into first-place in MLS.

Captain Kyle Beckerman and FW Robbie Findley scored in the 41st and 46th minutes for RSL, which turned in a dominant defensive performance, holding Seattle to a mere two shots and allowing zero clear-cut chances.

Saturday's win was the fifth-straight in all competitions for RSL. The Claret-and-Cobalt is now unbeaten in its last seven and 8-1-1 in its last 10 games across all comps. RSL leads the league in both goals scored with 26 and goal differential with a +10 mark.

The game got off to a slow start. RSL held a sizable possession advantage early on, but Seattle stayed organized in the back, not allowing the Claret-and-Cobalt any real opportunities for the majority of the first half.

That changed in the 41st minute, when Beckerman scored a fine goal to give RSL the lead. Seattle fouled FW Alvaro Saborio outside the box on the left side to give RSL a dangerous free kick. MF Javier Morales stepped to the 23-yard dead ball, hitting it off the wall and into the right side of the box. Beckerman ran onto it at the corner of the six, side-volleying his first-time shot over Sounders GK Michael Gspurning, off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

It didn't take RSL long to double its advantage, with Findley putting the Claret-and-Cobalt up 2-0 just seconds into the second half. Morales started the play, slipping Findley into the left side of the box with a through ball. Gspurning punched the speedy striker's initial 10-yard effort away, only for it to fall to Saborio at the top of the 18. The Costa Rican international quickly hit a shot that went directly at Findley, who collected the ball, turned and fired inside the far post from the top left corner of the six to put RSL up 2-0.

The Claret-and-Cobalt continued attacking after Findley's goal, registering a pair of half chances in the 61st minute and seeing a goal called back for offside in the 69th. DF Nat Borchers had the disallowed strike, tapping a ball home from close range before the linesman correctly raised his flag.

Seattle had its best chance of the game in the 82nd minute. FW Obafemi Martins ran onto a long ball in the area, dribbling wide of RSL GK Nick Rimando before turning and chipping an off-balance shot off the side netting from a tough angle.

Saborio nearly made it 3-0 in the 87th minute. The Costa Rican international got on the end of a Morales corner kick at the left post, heading his shot across the face of goal and inches wide of the far bar.

Real Salt Lake will return to action on Wednesday, when it will host the NASL Carolina RailHawks in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match at 7:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to MLS action next Saturday, June 29, when it will travel north of the border to take on Toronto FC.

Real Salt Lake Extends Winning Streak to Seven with 1-0 Win at Toronto

Real Salt Lake extended its club record winning streak to seven games across all competitions on Saturday, getting a goal from MF Yordany Alvarez to beat Toronto FC 1-0 at BMO Field. The win was RSL's first-ever in Canada; the Claret-and-Cobalt was winless in 10 matches in all competitions north of the border prior to Saturday's victory.

RSL is now 10-1-1 in all competitions since the start of May. Saturday's win completed a perfect month for the Utah side, which was 6-0-0 in MLS and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play during June. The Claret-and-Cobalt now stands alone atop the MLS table, three points ahead of the second-place Portland Timbers for the Supporters' Shield and Western Conference leads.

Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jason Kreis ran out a bit of an unusual starting lineup on Saturday, resting several regulars as he navigates the team through a busy stretch of four games in 12 days. The Claret-and-Cobalt also changed formation, departing from its usual 4-1-2-1-2 setup in favor of a 4-3-3.

RSL got off to a bit of a slow start as it settled in to its new lineup and formation. Toronto nearly took advantage in the 13th minute, when MF Bobby Convey had a very good look at goal. MF Jonathan Osorio picked up a loose pass in RSL's half, slipping FW Danny Koevermans through just outside the right edge of the area. Koevermans quickly crossed to Convey at the top of the box, who took a touch toward goal and flicked a left-footed shot just wide of the far post from the spot.

RSL MF Javier Morales had a decent look in the 16th minute, picking up a loose ball just outside the box on the left side and forcing TFC GK Joe Bendik into a diving save with a 20-yard curler.

Toronto had another good look in the 29th. DF Ryan Richter crossed from the right wing to Koevermans in the middle of the box, but the Dutchman couldn't generate any pace on his shot, rolling the ball right to RSL GK Nick Rimando for a comfortable save.

Alvarez scored his first career MLS goal to put RSL up 1-0 in the 45th minute. DF Tony Beltran collected a ball on the right wing, cutting into the box and passing to FW Olmes Garcia at the top of the box. Garcia smartly laid the ball off to Alvarez, who froze Bendik with an absolute laser of a shot that found the inside of the far post from just outside the top right corner of the box.

The second half started slowly, with neither side registering a clear cut opportunity until Bendik punched away a 25-yard free kick from Morales in the 72nd minute.

Things got heated in the 78th minute. Toronto MF Luis Silva got into it with Beltran, kicking out at the RSL right back's leg after going down. Beltran took exception to Silva's shenanigans, shoving the TFC substitute to the ground. Toronto DF Doneil Henry then escalated things, flying in to the fracas and shoving Beltran to the ground from behind. Referee Chris Penso showed Beltran and Henry straight red cards for their role in the incident and gave RSL FW Robbie Findley a yellow for pushing Henry after he shoved Beltran.

Toronto nearly equalized on three separate occasions in stoppage time, but Rimando came up with two huge stops and RSL DF Nat Borchers made a goal-line clearance to preserve the three points.

Toronto's first look came in the 93rd minute. A cross from former RSL FW Justin Braun took a deflection on its way in from the left side and FW Jeremy Brockie got on the end of it, flicking a header on goal from the top left of the six only to be cruelly denied by a nice reflex save from Rimando.

Brockie was denied again in the 95th. Toronto lumped a ball forward out of the back, and Brockie beat an onrushing Rimando to it in the box, flicking the bouncing ball over the RSL "˜keeper and on target. The ball looked ticketed for the back of the net, but Borchers had other ideas, racing back to clear the ball off the line.

Rimando came up big again in the 96th. A Toronto corner kick from the right side was flicked on to the back post to DF Steve Caldwell, who had an open look at goal from three yards. Thankfully for RSL, Caldwell couldn't quite control the ball, scuffing a shot on frame that Rimando saved with a dive.

Real Salt Lake will return to action on Wednesday, when it will host the Philadelphia Union at 8:00 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium. Tickets to the match - which will feature postgame fireworks - can be purchased at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office, online at www.RealSaltLake.com/Tickets or over the phone at 801-727-2700.
