ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- In a battle of the last twoWestern Conference champions, the Edmonton Oilers turned to acouple of rookies to get a much-needed jolt of confidence.

Rookie Andrew Cogliano scored a shorthanded game-tying goal withless than two minutes left in regulation and the Oilers scoredtwice in the shootout to hand the Anaheim Ducks a difficult 3-2loss on Sunday at the Honda Center.

Edmonton, which advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals two seasonsago before bowing out to the Carolina Hurricanes, entered thecontest in last place of the Northwest Division with eightpoints.

Trailing, 2-1, the 20-year-old Cogliano notched the secondshorthanded goal in his young career at 18:33 of the thirdperiod when the Oilers took advantage of some sloppypuckhandling on the Ducks' power play.

Left wing Geoff Sanderson, who was at the right faceoff circle, found Cogliano in the middle of the ice. The Toronto nativethen spun to his left and fired a shot that scooted past Ducksgoaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to knot the game, 2-2, forcingovertime.

After an uneventful overtime, the teams faced off in a shootoutwhere another rookie, 18-year-old center Sam Gagner, worked abeautiful double-deke move to notch the first tally forEdmonton.

Ducks right wing Corey Perry was denied on his first attempt ofthe shootout and following another unsuccessful shootout attemptby left wing Chris Kunitz, Edmonton right wing Alex Hemskyended the game the Oilers second tally, sending Anaheim to itsthird consecutive setback.

The comeback win rewarded the efforts of Edmonton netminderMathieu Garon, who posted 30 saves to get his second win of theseason.

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - The Anaheim Ducks won the StanleyCup title last season, but that seems like a distant memorythese days.

The Ducks' winless streak was extended to four games on Sundayin a 3-2 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers in front of 17,174at Honda Center.

Edmonton, which had lost seven of nine coming into the contest, was outshot, 32-22, and trailed by a goal late in the thirdperiod when it tied the game on a Andrew Cogliano's shorthandedgoal with 1:27 remaining in regulation.

In the shootout, the Oilers' Sam Gagner and Alex Hemsky scoredwhile Edmonton netminder Mathieu Garon stopped Anaheim's CoreyPerry and Chris Kunitz.

"I guess we found a way to lose tonight," Anaheim goaltenderJean-Sebastien Giguere said. "So it's disappointing, but youbuild with positives and I think there were a lot more positivestonight than negatives. I thought we deserved to win and if wekeep playing that way we'll get a lot more wins than losses."

Edmonton's shorthanded goal came when the Ducks got a littlesloppy with their puck-handling on the power play after SteveStaios was sent off for high-sticking with 2:57 to play in thethird period.

The Oilers carried the puck deep into the Anaheim zone andSanderson skated it out near the blue line where he let go of aslap shot that Cogliano tipped in from the slot.

"I went to the front of the net," Cogliano said. "We've beentalking about going to the net a lot, and I just got a stick onit."

Garon, the backup to Dwayne Roloson, finished with 31 saves andthe most acrobatic came late in the second period when he wassprawled on his stomach, but reached behind his back with hisglove hand to knock Brad May's backhand shot out of the air. Hewas also face-down on the ice when he denied Kunitz in theshootout.

"I remember facing these guys maybe four or five times in thelast few years in shootouts," said Garon, who was playing forthe first time in 16 days. "I think maybe we won half of them. They have good shooters, but when you score two goals in theshootout you make it easier on the goalie."

Kunitz and Perry scored for the Ducks, who fell behind 1-0 inthe first period then rallied behind a strong defensive effort.

"We didn't have a very good start to the game," Ducks coachRandy Carlyle said, "But we got our game going. We played fairlywell. We just seem snake-bitten. If something can go wrong forus, it goes wrong right now."

Edmonton scored first on Hemsky's third goal of the season at12:41 of the first period. Shawn Horcoff won a faceoff and sentthe puck toward the point where Hemsky stepped into a slap shotthat blew past Giguere high to his glove side.

In the second period, Anaheim notched the equalizer when Perrywon a battle for the puck in the corner and threaded a passbetween the legs of Oilers defenseman Steve Staios to Kunitz, who steered it home for his fifth goal of the season at 11:51.

Perry put the Ducks ahead at 7:53 of the final period with aslap shot from just outside the top of the right circle.

Anaheim and Edmonton, the last two teams to represent theWestern Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals, have struggled outof the gate this season.

The Oilers entered the game in last place in the NorthwestDivision. The Ducks are in fourth in the Pacific, trailed onlyby Phoenix, which beat them at the Honda Center on Thursday, snapping Anaheim's 10-game home winning streak against theCoyotes.

Only Phoenix has scored fewer goals than the Ducks among WesternConference teams this season.

Edmonton's power-play woes continued as Anaheim successfullykilled off four penalties, making the Oilers 3-for-48 on powerplays this season.

Dustin Penner of Edmonton played his first game in Anaheim sinceleaving the Ducks as a free agent to sign a five-year, $21.25million contract in the summer. He did not figure in thescoring. When he was shown on the video board during the firstperiod, it drew a loud chorus of boos.

"I didn't know what to anticipate," Penner said. "You neverfully understand what it is going to be like until you comeback. That first period was a lot of emotions and memoriesrunning through my mind."
