Robert Earnshaw scores twice in Reds' 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City.

TORONTO – Forward Robert Earnshaw scored an early brace and Toronto FC were able to hang on for a 2-1 win in their home opener against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre.

Earnshaw capitalized on an errant back pass by MLS Defender of the Year Matt Besler to score after three minutes and the Welshman also buried a penalty kick to give Toronto an early 2-0 lead. Although Sporting KC Designated Player Claudio Bieler pulled one back late, Toronto sealed their first win in 15 league matches dating back to the 2012 season and the first in the tenure of new manager Ryan Nelsen.

The result handed Sporting KC their first regular-season loss in 13 matches, also dating back to 2012, and left them one match short of tying their all-time club record of 14 straight undefeated.

Sporting KC Falls 2-1 at Toronto FC

Sporting Kansas City fell 2-1 to Toronto FC on Saturday at the Rogers Centre, suffering the team's first defeat in 14 MLS regular season games dating back to last August. Designated Player Claudio Bieler scored his second goal in as many games for the club off of a volley in the 77th minute, but a pair of first half goals from Toronto FC forward Robert Earnshaw earned the full three points for Toronto FC in their first home match of 2013.

Toronto FC started the match strong, notching a goal in the third minute of play when Earnshaw intercepted a pass in the defensive third and capitalized on the chance with a well-taken shot from the right side of the penalty area for his first MLS goal.

Sporting KC responded four minutes later when Chance Myers made an overlapping run and cut the ball to Benny Feilhaber, who chipped it just wide of the goal.

Earnshaw doubled Toronto's lead in the 20th minute from the penalty mark after Paulo Nagamura was judged to have fouled newly-acquired midfielder John Bostock inside the box. With Nielsen guessing to his left, Earnshaw slotted his shot to the opposite side for the eventual match-winner.

Toronto FC nearly claimed a third goal in the 31st minute when Reggie Lambe sent in a swinging shot from the top of the box that was just wide of the far post. Sporting KC got in one last look at goal before the end of the half when Collin was on the receiving end of a free kick, but his glancing header was just wide of the near post.

Myers gave Sporting KC their first scoring opportunity of the second half in the 52nd minute when his glancing header was just wide of the left post. Nine minutes later, halftime substitute C.J. Sapong nearly netted a goal for Sporting Kansas City when he won a header from a Graham Zusi free kick only to see it rattle off the crossbar.

Claudio Bieler provided a much-needed lifeline to Sporting Kansas City with under 15 minutes remaining. Sapong flicked on a long service from Jimmy Nielsen and the Argentinian striker took a shot from distance that blazed past Joseph Bendik.

The 89th minute nearly saw an equalizer for Sporting Kansas City when a long throw-in from Besler bounced around the box and fell to Bieler at top the top of the area, but his right-footed volley was punched out by Bendik.

Six minutes into stoppage time, Sporting KC came close again when Zusi sent in a free kick that Collin headed just wide of the goal on a last gasp attempt at salvaging a road result. Sporting Kansas City will return to KCto KC for their first home match of the year at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 16 at Sporting Park against the Chicago Fire. The match will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports..

Tickets are available in limited supply through Ticketmaster and at Sporting Park Box Offices.

    QUOTES

Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes

    Thoughts on today's game...

I thought Toronto came out flying. It was their home opener, the crowd was good for them. They pushed the game and they made the most of their opportunities. We made a big mistake early on to get them into the game that gave them some confidence. Getting the second goal early on put us behind the eight ball pretty early. Two goals is a big deficit to come back from. I thought they closed the half out well, they slowed the game down and didn't give us much to get into the rhythm or anything. The second half I thought our guys did a very good job of changing the pace of the game and pushing the tempo a little bit. We created quite a few opportunities, maybe a little unlucky here or there, but at the end of the day they did well in the first half we did well in the second half, they got two and we got one. It was a good one.

Did you say anything to your team at half?

Quite a few things. The biggest thing was that our movement off the ball wasn't good enough. We were letting them dictate the tempo. They guys did a good job in the second half so that was a good thing.

Was the substitution made at the half intended to give your team more size and speed up front?

We definitely needed to change something, I don't know if whether it was a change for a different mentality or it was the difference in the way everyone was playing, but it wasn't just one guy. C.J. (Sapong) was a good spark for us at half, kind of changed a lot of the game for us so it was good to see.

Is it difficult to scout a team with players that you haven't seen before?

Yeah, you don't really know what their tendencies were as a group so you don't know coming into the game who is going to play where. I would say that regardless of that you still have to be able to play your game and you should still have good fight and intensity in you and I think in the first half they had it a little more than we did.

    Sporting KC captain Jimmy Nielsen

    Thoughts on today's game...

I thought we didn't play very well in the first 45 minutes. We lost it in the first 45. I think we played a very good second half. I hope that will be a lesson for us, everybody would have that in their minds, what to do and what not to do. It's definitely not what to do what we did in the first half. Absolutely a great performance by our side in the second half but unfortunately not enough, we gave it away in the first half with a very, very unacceptable and sloppy 45 minutes. It's very disappointing.

Did coach say anything during the half to get the team going in the second half?

It was not a question about tactical, about the quality of what we did, it was our attitude on the field that was wrong. We were not ready to battle; we were not ready to fight. That surprised me a lot because that is what we talked about just before we went on the field. We should be ready right from the first whistle but it took us 45 minutes to get ready.

What is the difference in the Toronto team from last year to this year?

We got to give them some credit too. It's not just bad stuff from us in the first half. It was their home opener, coming out full of energy and we gave them a lot more energy. They were all over us at one point and we didn't have any response to that.

Was it something that Toronto's defens e or the lack of finish from your players that kept the team to one goal?

It was a mix. I think the second half we created a lot of good chances, we created enough opportunities to get a point, unfortunately we didn't get that equalizer. But again, this should be a lesson for us.

Toronto FC Head Coach Ryan Nelsen

    Thoughts on the game?

We're still a long way away from where we want to be. More importantly it was a step forward. I think there was improvement in Vancouver, there is improvement today and we got to take baby step to become a very good team. This will help in a lot of ways but we've still got a lot of work to do. We need to improve the team. We need to improve everything and we will still be working very hard to do it.

Did the team press as much as you wanted after the first twenty minutes?

It's something that naturally happens when you are up two nil sometimes you kind of sit back on it. They weren't really breaking us down in open play. Corners and set pieces were obviously a major factor, but they weren't really breaking us down. It's a very good Kansas City team, Peter (Vermes) has done a fantastic job with them and they'll be there about the top this season. You can't get too greedy.

What vibe did you get from the fans?

It was an amazing turn out. Considering what has happened in the past for them to come out in those number the whole team can't thank them enough. I think it really helped to see them over the finish line. I know a lot of the guys were saying at half time and afterwards how much they wanted to do it for the fans because they have been with them through thick and thin. I'm pleased in that they can have a good night on the town with a win behind them.

    Toronto FC defender Danny Califf

On the second-half pressure from Sporting KC...

I would have rather had a clean sheet and not had the stress at the end. I think that says a lot about the character of the group of the guys. We talked about culture change and the first step in that process is not to lose and I think we've shown through preseason and especially tonight that we took a step in the right direction. The quality of the group and the personalities of the group are such that we just need a few of these and build up the confidence and feel that we can go anywhere and win.

On the physical nature of the game...

Yes a little bit, they were whining a little bit which is standard when things aren't going your way. I think we did a good job standing up for ourselves and not feeling intimidated.

    Toronto FC forward Robert Earnshaw

    On the victory...

We needed to step it up. We said before the game to forget about last weekend, we worked hard did well and lost so we just needed to step it up today.

    On the penalty kick...

I was very happy about it because I changed my mind right at the last minute because I just saw the goalie take a step and it was nice because I was thinking of going to that side and I just changes my mind the last minutes. Overall I think it's just a day I think we can all celebrate because there was a lot of hard work there, a full team effort.

Re: Sporting KC Falls 2-1 at Toronto FC

How big is Montreal vs. Toronto?
A new supporters record will be set Saturday

“We absolutely expect to beat that record on Saturday,” Toronto FC senior director of business operations Paul Bierne told MLSsoccer.com by phone on Monday afternoon. “We worked with the front office in Montreal to arrange for a special allotment of tickets to be made available to TFC fans. As a result, over 5,000 tickets have been requested. We’ll see how many actually travel to Montreal. After this week’s win against Sporting Kansas City, I expect it will be a good solid number.”

“Montreal is a team that we always want to beat,” former TFC captain and current assistant coach Jim Brennan told MLSsoccer.com. “The two cities are quite close. We have different cultures. When it comes to any sport, we always want to get one up on Montreal. We think we are the big city, which we are, the one where everything happens. I don’t think they can handle that.”

Added Impact assistant coach and former player Mauro Biello: “It’s always an important game for us. It’s always a little bit more than only a soccer game. It’s always about proving which team is the best in Canada, every single time we face each other.”

Away Support Mark Set To Fall Saturday

Traveling TFC fans expected to nearly double their own record set in 2008

Montreal Impact vs. Toronto FC still might feel like a fairly new rivalry to many MLS fans given their recent additions to the league as expansion teams.

But the history runs deeper than you think. Here’s all you need to know about this weekend’s Rivalry Week matchup at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium (4 pm ET, TSN/RDS in Canada, MLS Live in the US): A soon-to-be-new MLS record 4,200 traveling supporters will be making the trek from Toronto (TFC fans already hold the all-time MLS record for traveling supporters with 2,400 in Columbus back in 2008).

Toronto FC Acquire Israeli International Ben Haim

Toronto FC announced Thursday that it has acquired Israeli international defender Tal Ben Haim on loan from English Premier League (EPL) club, Queens Park Rangers F.C. (QPR).

"Tal Ben Haim has been one of the top defenders in the EPL for nearly a decade. He captains his national team and Ryan thinks the world of him," said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne. "He's exactly the sort of veteran defender we need."

Ben Haim, 31, joins Toronto FC after signing with QPR in January; he made six appearances for the club in all competitions. He has made over 300 appearances during nine seasons in England, eight of which have been in the EPL.

Ben Haim began his youth career at Israeli Premier League club, Maccabi Tel Aviv and went on to sign for the first team. He made his professional debut in April 2001 and was part of the club's Israeli Premier League title winning side in 2002-03. Ben Haim was named club captain in his final season at Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2003-04. He signed with EPL side Bolton Wanderers F.C. ahead of the 2004-05 season and remained with the club for three seasons, making 110 appearances across all competitions. He signed with Chelsea F.C. (Chelsea) for the 2007-08 season and was part of the club's second place finish in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Ben Haim left Chelsea and signed with Manchester City F.C. (City) the following season. After 15 appearances for City, he was loaned to Sunderland F.C. for the remainder of the 2008-09 campaign. He signed with Portsmouth F.C. (Portsmouth) in August 2009 and made 24 appearances as the club was relegated at the conclusion of the season. Ben Haim was then loaned to West Ham United F.C. for the start of the 2010-11 season and later returned to Portsmouth in January 2011. He remained with the club until the conclusion of the 2011-12 season.

Ben Haim has earned 71 caps to date for the Israeli National team. He made his international debut against Germany in a friendly match in February 2002. His most recent cap came on March 26, 2013 in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Northern Ireland.

    Oduro the Difference in Toronto

In a first half that saw both sides squander multiple chances, it was Dominic Oduro's tally just before the halftime whistle that lifted the Crew (4-4-3) to a 1-0 road victory over Toronto FC (1-6-4) on Saturday evening at BMO Field. Argentine playmaker Federico Higua - n found a seam between two Toronto defenders to lob the game-winning assist to the speedy Ghanaian striker to set the tone heading into the halftime break.

"It was a great ball by Higua - n," Oduro, who leads the Crew with five goals this season, said after the match. "I think that we were able to make that eye contact.

"The goalie narrowed the angle on me, but I saw the opening when the ball went in front of me and I was able to lace it right there."

The win ended a two-match skid for the Crew after losing back-to-back home matches to the New York Red Bulls and Colorado Rapids. Though the Black & Gold were unable to dictate the possession and play as they did in the home losses, they were able to secure the all-important three points at the end of the 90 minutes. The victory marked the Crew's third road win already in 2013.

"We did okay," Oduro admitted. "I don't think it was one of our best games on the road, but at the end of the day we were able to grind it out and come out with the three points. That's what was really needed."

The forward continued: "During the other games that we lost, I don't think we really played that bad. We were just unfortunate. This is an occasion of how good we are, especially on the road. We just have to keep believing in ourselves and keep [playing well on the road] and we should be fine."

GEHRIG PERFORMS WELL IN PLACE OF MARSHALL

Third-year pro Eric Gehrig made his first start of 2013 in central defense on Saturday to replace an injured Chad Marshall. Gehrig performed well alongside Gl=A1uber in the backline, helping the Crew to its third shutout of the season.

"[Gehrig] was very solid," Head Coach Robert Warzycha said. "Maybe in the first half he had a couple times he was hesitating to clear the ball or deciding where he was going to pass it, but the second half was very clean."

Gehrig had been patiently awaiting an opportunity this season, sitting behind established veterans Marshall and Gl=A1uber on the Crew's depth chart.

"I was excited for the opportunity," Gehrig said. "This is my third year as a pro, and I've worked really hard along with a lot of other guys in this locker room. I was happy that I got the call. It's hard not having regular games here and there, but at the end of the day you can't have any excuses.

"We got the shutout. We won, so I must've done something right."

Warzycha will be forced to make changes yet again to his backline as Gl=A1uber picked up his fifth yellow card of the season to result in a one-match suspension and leftback Tyson Wahl left with a knock. However, Warzycha is relishing the Black & Gold's victory instead of worrying about next week.

"We just won the game," he said. "We'll see next week who's available and who will make the team."

Toronto FC and Monaco lining up $10 million bids
    for Carlos Tevez

It is being reported in Italy and Brazil that Toronto FC are looking to bring Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez over to play in MLS.

This report on Lancenet claims that Toronto FC and Monaco have made similar offers for the striker with a reported transfer value of $10 million USD. They also suggest that the contract offered to the player would be in the range of $85 million over three years. That number would be a drop in the bucket for Monaco who are throwing cash around to sign anyone available in recent weeks but for MLS it would be completely unheard of.

Toronto FC coughs up another late goal in draw with Philadelphia

It’s as if some endless loop of soccer horror is playing out for Toronto FC — heart-breaking, gut-wrenching, soul-sapping.

“Gutted” was a word that flowed from coach Ryan Nelsen.

“Absolutely devastated” was how he described it.

Same old, same old, many others had to be thinking.

Once again leaving points on the pitch thanks to a last-second faux pas, a 10-man unit had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union at BMO Field on Saturday, the latest in a seemingly never-ending series of late-game disappointments.

Goals hard to come by as Toronto FC holds New York Red Bulls to 0-0 draw

The statistics are still bleak in terms of wins and goals, but credit Toronto FC with a gritty performance Saturday in a 0-0 tie with the New York Red Bulls.

    Another TFC overhaul
Have they learned from past mistakes?

What can you say about a team that only has seven total shots on target in eighteen games from the midfield? Either the team is playing some weird 6-1-3 formation or the team is very bad. TFC haven't played a 6-1-3 this year, so yes, they are very bad. Despite only doing slightly worse than projected in the standings, the team has done it in a very boring, and in many ways, a scared fashion.

Let’s be honest. Like Johnston, Preki, Klinsmann (to a different extent), Winter, and Mariner, MLSE have been scammed again by a coach who was totally unprepared and provides zero assets to the club, as well as by a new President and General Manager whose greatest skill is knowing when to leave a sinking ship. DC United, who by the way last won the title almost 10 years ago, are probably the only greater disappointment this season than the Reds.

    Reds Win!
Osorio levels, Wiedeman wins it late in 2-1 BMO Field triumph.

TORONTO - Jonathan Osorio and Andrew Wiedeman each scored a late goal to spearhead a dramatic comeback victory Saturday afternoon, as Toronto FC defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1 for their first league victory at BMO Field in over a year.

The win also snapped a six-game winless streak for Toronto FC (3-10-8), who had won just once in 17 league matches against the Crew all-time before their heroics in the final seven minutes, played in a torrential downpour.
