    Texas going to up-tempo offense

Mack Brown and Texas, after two years of attempting to play the SEC's smashmouth style, have decided to join college football's whiplash crowd.

Maybe the Longhorns won't play at the same breakneck pace as Oregon, at least not at first. Think Oklahoma State -- that type of speed, that type of physical offense, and that type of scoring ability.

"[Up-tempo offense] has changed our game completely, and we are going to get right in the middle of it," Brown said.

Texas used to be the team that was at the top of the scoring charts. With Colt McCoy and the spread offense, the Longhorns were fifth and third, respectively, in offense during the star quarterback's last two seasons.

    Sooners' Kendal Thompson arrested

Kendal Thompson, who is vying to win Oklahoma's three-way quarterback competition, was arrested Friday morning on misdemeanor complaints of public intoxication and interference with official process, according to the Norman Police Department.

Thompson, 20, was arrested about 2:15 a.m. after police responded to a loud party call. As they approached the apartment complex where the party was, police noticed Thompson passed out on a nearby hill. According to police, Thompson's "speech was very slow" and "not making sense with incomplete sentences."

West Virginia football spokesman Mike Montoro on Monday confirmed McCartney's return.

McCartney left for personal reasons last November after making nine catches for 112 yards in his junior season. McCartney was third on the team in 2011 with 49 catches for 585 yards.

    College Football Rivalry Renewed

College football fans, especially those in Virginia, will be happy to hear that the coveted Black Diamond Trophy will soon be up for grabs again. In 2021 the Virginia Tech Hokies and the West Virginia Mountaineers will renew their rivalry with a home-and-homes series.

The Mountaineers will host the game in 2021. The Hokies will host the next matchup the very next year in 2022.

"During my three years as Athletic Director at West Virginia University, I have heard from legions of Mountaineer fans, particularly those in the Southern part of the state, who have expressed their strong sentiments to renew the football rivalry with Virginia Tech," West Virginia AD Oliver Luck said in a statement.

Re: Texas going to up-tempo offense

Mack Brown has the talent in the players, just not the talent in the coaches. Diaz has no clue to defending the BiGXII offenses.

Jake Waters to start for Kansas State

Coach Bill Snyder has had success before starting a junior college quarterback at Kansas State. This season, he'll try for success with another.

Snyder announced Monday that Jake Waters will be his starting quarterback Friday when the Wildcats open against North Dakota State. Waters got the starting nod over Daniel Sams for the spot vacated by Heisman finalist Collin Klein.

    Colorado tabs QB Connor Wood

Connor Wood emerged from spring ball as the Colorado Buffaloes' starting quarterback for the second straight season. Unlike last year, he kept that title in the fall, fending off flashy freshman Sefo Liufau.

    Arizona benches Ka'Deem Carey

Ka'Deem Carey, the nation's leading rusher last season, sat out Arizona's season opener against Northern Arizona on Friday night.

The school said Carey was not playing "per team policy."

The punishment apparently stems from the trouble Carey encountered in the offseason.

Big 12 unveils bowl game lineup

The Big 12 will have three bowl games against SEC teams each postseason.

Big 12 officials Friday announced their future seven-game bowl lineup, which is highlighted by the previously announced 12-year Sugar Bowl partnership for the leagues to match their champions. If one or both champions make it into the new College Football Playoff, other top league teams would be selected for the game in the Superdome.

All of the deals start next year, coinciding with the new playoff. Other than the Sugar Bowl, all the agreements are for the 2014-19 seasons.

A deal with the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando gives the Big 12 a game in Florida. There are also new agreements in place with the Liberty Bowl in Memphis and the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas. There are renewed deals with the Alamo, Texas, Buffalo Wild Wings and Heart of Dallas bowls.

Walk-on Baker Mayfield has five touchdowns in Texas Tech win

Those BCS youngsters for Texas Tech had quite a debut.

Baker Mayfield, believed to be the first walk-on true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for a BCS school, accounted for five touchdowns in a 41-23 victory over SMU on Friday night in the Red Raiders' first game under Kliff Kingsbury, at 34 the youngest head coach at a BCS school.

J.W. Walsh helps No. 13 Oklahoma State beat Miss. State

The No. 13 Oklahoma State Cowboys have been known more for their offense than their defense.

The Cowboys' defense, however, kept Oklahoma State in the game long enough for their offense to wake up Saturday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

J.W. Walsh threw for 135 yards and ran for another 125 and a touchdown to lead Oklahoma State to a 21-3 win over Mississippi State in the Texas Kickoff.

David Ash tosses 4 TDs as Texas rolls New Mexico

In his first two seasons, two first-half interceptions and a deficit to a big underdog could have easily sent Texas quarterback David Ash to the sideline as someone else took over for the Longhorns.

Not Saturday night. Texas stuck with Ash this time and the junior quarterback made the big plays to first spark a rally, then delivered the knockout punch as the Longhorns overcame a slow start to roll over New Mexico State 56-7.

Trevor Knight, Sooners give coach Bob Stoops 150th career win

As much as anything, Trevor Knight's legs won him the job as Oklahoma's starting quarterback, and he showcased his running ability Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe.

Knight, a redshirt freshman, rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries and threw three touchdown passes -- two to Jalen Saunders -- and No. 16 Oklahoma beat the Warhawks 34-0 on Saturday night.
