This was a first. Kyle Long declining an opportunity to talk?

On the way off the practice field Thursday at Halas Hall, the Bears rookie told a swarm of reporters he just wasn't interested in doing interviews.

The horde laughed, knowing Long shies away from attention the way Sean Hannity shies away from an argument.

But Long was serious, just not in the mood to wax poetic on blocking schemes or 3-0 starts or Lions antagonist Ndamukong Suh.

"I don't mean to be a (jerk)," Long said. "I've just got a lot to focus on this week."

Had this suddenly become a different approach for the energetic guard as he prepares to face a Lions defensive front that's aggressive, active and led by a menacing All-Pro in Suh?

In some ways, sure. But that wasn't the reason Long was uncharacteristically dodging the spotlight.

"No," he said later in the locker room. "I just don't want to talk to the media."

But why did this week include more to focus on than the previous three?

"I'm a starting right guard in the NFL," Long answered. "If you're going to tell me there's not a lot to focus on and that's your position, then you'd be lying."

Long readily acknowledges the difficulties Suh presents and knows assertiveness will be a must this week. After a Week 1 win over the Bengals, Long noted that trying to block defensive tackle Geno Atkins was like trying to move a fire hydrant.

Handling Suh may be more like trying to tame a junkyard Doberman.

"He's just relentless," Long said. "Big, strong physical guy. Great player. And he also has great players around him. So even when he doesn't show up statistically, a lot of times he'll take on two blockers and leave someone else unblocked."

This could be one very nasty battle inside. Look for Suh to pull a cheap shot if Long is holing his own.
