It is difficult to blame the Bears defense for a three-touchdown outburst by the Lions in a 3 minute, 26-second span of the second quarter.

But faults in the defense are showing through a 3-1 start. If the first quarter of the season is a snapshot of what lies ahead, it may be difficult to call this an elite unit by the end of the year. It wasn't just what happened Sunday. There have been signs through the first month.

The Lions blew open what turned into a 40-32 victory Sunday at Ford Field by scoring three times on only seven snaps as they put 24 unanswered points on the board to take a 30-10 lead. It wasn't like Matthew Stafford marched the Lions up and down the field.

Sure, Reggie Bush's 37-yard touchdown run was an example of what was wrong much of the game. Center Dominic Raiola and right guard Larry Warford created a big hole and Bush shook an arm tackle from rookie Cornelius Washington and hurdled Major Wright as the safety made a diving effort at his feet. From there, Bush sped into the end zone with a pursuing Charles Tillman too late to cut him off.

It was pretty obvious the defense was having issues that were obscured by the turnovers. They were ranked 26th before yesterday's game, and they will probably fall further today. That's way too low a ranking for a team supposedly in contention for a playoff berth.
