Re: UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos III [TONIGHT!!]

Didn't agree with the Boetsch decision over Dollaway. I have no fondness for The Doberman but the judging in that fight was questionable. Boetsch was the one coming forward but he was out-struck and out-grappled.

The Eye/Kaufman fight was much closer. I think everyone agreed that Eye won the first and Kaufman the third. Kaufman was very stiff in the first two rounds but looked much better late in the fight. No doubt she would've won a five-rounder. She didn't look to be in great shape but her cardio and late surge suggested otherwise.

Lombard's KO of Marquardt was a warning shot to the welterweight division. I'd like to see him fight Ellenberger or Erick Silva next.

Amazing fight card, so glad I took the weekend off to enjoy this fight.

The Mexican world war, as dfw so idiotically labeled it, was awesome. Much love and respect to both fighters for going balls out.

Boetsch won? Wtf I stepped away from my tv for the decision and had assumed all night that CB unfortunately won. Whoa what a horrible judgement call. I may have to watch that again.

Time for Big Country to go back to fighting mid level guys and bringing the excitement. He's a good fighter but not elite. If he had taken training more seriously in his younger days, he could have been a major threat. He's still a fan favorite and an exciting fighter so give him good matchups on Fox cards.

Nothing to say about Cain that hasn't already been said. The guy is the best heavyweight in the world. His gas tank is unbelievable and his fight plans are amazing. His pressure is out of this world. After dominating JDS for 10 rounds,
I am convinced that the first fight was just a very lucky punch. This fight should have been stopped in the 3rd. The cornermen and doctors did a bad job IMO. Nobody is beating Cain for awhile.

The stoppage? I think JDS just fell full force on his head and his body gave out at the same time. I think his body just shut down. Can't blame him though.

Diego Sanchez was much more lucid in the post-fight press conference. Seems his Octagon interview was just a combination of things conspiring to make him sound like Larry Holmes. Whoever stitched up his forehead gash made it almost invisible over his brow.

I wouldn't say it was a "lucky punch". The Cain-JDS matchups are essentially a test in whether Cain can control JDS before Dos Santos drops a bomb on him. Cain got caught early in their first fight, and he also got cracked on the very first exchange of this fight as well (and several times thereafter, but JDS had already slowed down by that point). JDS's pace falls off noticeably after 2 or 3 rounds, if Cain makes it that far then hes most likely going to win, but we saw JDS still has pretty impressive power even when hes gassed and beat to hell.

And yeah I would never knock JDS for stopping. He should have been put away about 6 or 7 minutes earlier and was still going on pure heart. Like others have said already, his body was just done and its impressive he lasted as long as he did.

JDS has massive power, but that punch in the first fight was more lucky than anything else, IMO. Cain has shown that he can eat Junior's punches in the 2nd and 3rd fight before he gets to impose his will. Junior has scary good power, but after seeing 10 rounds of domination by Cain, that punch just looks like a lucky punch that JDS landed.

I stood up when Diego landed that crazy uppercut(?) on Melendez and knocked him down. I definitely thought Diego had the fight right there but Melendez amazingly got up right after and recovered. One of the best and most intense fight I have seen in a long time.

Thanks to all for the recaps and impressions of the fight.

(Damn, I did not order the fight. In Ptd there was a Duck, Beaver and Timber game all at the same time as the fight. Went with the free options to feed my adrenaline rush.)

Apparently JDS has no recollection of anything past the 3rd. According to his manager, JDS thought he was KO'd in the 3rd and doesn't even remember giving the post fight interview. So much for Cain hitting like a girl.

me too! I was rooting for Sanchez to complete the comeback but for some damn reason he went for the choke when following up with a flurry would have been his best chance to end it.

Anyone else incensed when they announced the score cards and one judge had it 30-27? No fucking way Melendez won that 3rd round.
