    Notre Dame
Temple push back 2014 season opener one year

As Notre Dame scrambles to clear a logjam in their ’14 football schedule, news from our friends at CSNPhilly.com give us an update on another big change. With the Irish set to open the regular season against Temple in just over a month, Notre Dame planned on returning the favor with a visit to Philadelphia to play the Owls at Lincoln Financial Field. While that game is still set, it’s been pushed back a calendar year to ’15 to accommodate the Irish.

Notre Dame doesn’t comment on schedules until they’re finalized, but Swarbrick has openly discussed the challenges of making preexisting commitments work with the new scheduling pact with the ACC. But the move of the Temple game seems like one of the final chess pieces that need maneuvering.

Notre Dame Could Face ACC Teams In Shamrock Series
    [IMG]

The 2014 Shamrock Series game has not yet been announced, but it could feature one of the Irish’s ACC opponents, according to a report by Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune.

“I think you will see that a lot in the future, where we take a game that you would think of as a ‘regular’ game and take that game somewhere as part of the Shamrock Series,” Notre Dame Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick told the Tribune. “I can certainly anticipate future ACC opponents being opponents in a Shamrock Series game.”

Swarbrick specifically mentioned North Carolina, Louisville, and Wake Forest as games that could be candidates for the Shamrock Series in 2014.

Notre Dame is still in the process of finalizing their 2014 football schedule. They recently trimmed their slate down to 13 games after moving their trip to Temple to the 2015 season.

One more game will have to be postponed or cancelled in order for the Irish to get down to the NCAA maximum of 12 regular-season games. The most likely candidates for movement are Northwestern, Purdue or Rice.

No. 21 Notre Dame scores 21 in 4th quarter, rallies past Purdue

Notre Dame receiver DaVaris Daniels staggered Purdue with two late touchdowns. Three plays after his second score, teammate Bennett Jackson delivered the final blow -- a 34-yard interception return for a score.

On a night No. 21 Notre Dame faced a stiff challenge from its oldest in-state rival, the late scoring flurry from Daniels and Jackson finally knocked out the Boilermakers 31-24 on Saturday night.

    Ross Browner had foot amputated

    Print

Ross Browner, a star defensive end on Notre Dame's 1973 and 1977 national championship teams, had his left foot amputated in March.

The 59-year-old Warren, Ohio, native and 1999 College Football Hall of Fame inductee developed an ulcer in the foot after he says he was bitten by a brown recluse spider in 2000 while on vacation in the Virgin Islands. This led to multiple infections and 22 operations.

Browner was diagnosed with diabetes in 1994. About 10 to 15 percent of people with that disease can develop a foot ulcer at some point in their lives, according to studies.

No. 22 Notre Dame gives first loss to Michigan State

The mistakes led to all of Notre Dame's points in the 17-13 victory, including two on the game-winning drive after a pass by Michigan State receiver R.J. Shelton led to an interception by safety Matthias Farley, setting up the go-ahead touchdown.

Notre Dame snaps five-game home losing streak to USC

Notre Dame has finally snapped its long, miserable home losing streak to USC.

    It sure wasn't easy.

The Fighting Irish outlasted Southern California in a game of attrition Saturday night as Tommy Rees threw two touchdown passes in a 14-10 victory that ended a five-game home skid to their rivals that dated to 2001.

Louis Nix III out against Air Force

Tommy Rees' neck turned out to be the least of Notre Dame's health concerns this week, as nose guard Louis Nix III is out for Saturday's game at Air Force and right guard Christian Lombard is out for the season, coach Brian Kelly said Thursday.

Nix, a redshirt junior, will not be making the trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., because of knee tendinitis, while Lombard underwent surgery to remove a herniated disk in his back that will sideline him for the rest of 2013.

    Everett Golson reapplies to ND

Everett Golson has applied for readmission to Notre Dame, coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"That application process has been submitted from what I know of," Kelly said, according to the newspaper. "And decisions relative to admissions happen in middle of December."

    Louis Nix undergoes knee surgery

    Louis Nix's season is over.

Notre Dame's charismatic nose guard underwent surgery Thursday on a torn meniscus, coach Brian Kelly said, meaning that the redshirt junior will miss the Fighting Irish's final two regular-season games and their bowl game.

He is expected to graduate from Notre Dame in December and has one year of eligibility remaining, though he is undecided on his future.

Louis Nix III will enter NFL draft

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says nose guard Louis Nix III has signed with an agent and will forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft, where he is projected by many to be a first-round draft pick.

Nix's season came to an end Nov. 21 when he underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The 6-foot-2, 349-pound senior also had been slowed by tendinitis in the same knee.

Nix, who didn't play as a freshman, told media at the time he was undecided about whether he would return, saying his focus was on getting healthy. He is expected to graduate from Notre Dame this month.

Notre Dame controls 2nd half to beat Rutgers in Pinstripe Bowl

This nicely sums up Tommy Rees' Notre Dame career.

The senior threw for 319 yards and no interceptions in his final college game, leading No. 25 Notre Dame to a 29-16 victory against Rutgers that was far from pretty but ultimately successful -- and an offensive lineman won the MVP award.

    Irish hire Brian VanGorder

Notre Dame has hired New York Jets assistant Brian VanGorder as the Irish's new defensive coordinator, multiple media outlets reported Saturday night.

VanGorder previously worked with Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly at Grand Valley State from 1989-91.

VanGorder is in his first year as linebackers coach with the Jets after serving as Auburn's defensive coordinator last season. The Tigers went 3-9 with his defense, including 0-8 in Southeastern Conference play.
