Donnie Jones signs extension at UCF

Central Florida basketball coach Donnie Jones has signed a contract extension through the 2017-18 season.

UCF athletic director Todd Stansbury announced the deal Friday, which adds three years to Jones' current pact.

The Knights have registered at least 20 wins each season under Jones, marking only the second time since the program moved up to Division I in 1984 that it's achieved that feat.

Jon Rothstein’s American Athletic Conference Offseason Notebook
Questions, Preseason Power Rankings & Players To Watch

At least four or five. The advantage that the American has over leagues like the Atlantic 10 and the Big East is that this conference has three teams — Louisville, Memphis, and UConn — that all should be ranked in the Top 25 for the majority of the season.

Why is that such a big deal? It’s real simple. Having three teams ranked in the Top 25 means programs on the bubble from the American could all have better RPI’s than potential bubble teams in the Atlantic 10 and the Big East because they’re going to play Louisville, Memphis, and UConn twice during the regular season.

The American will send at least four or five teams to the NCAA Tournament, but that number could stretch to six depending on what circumstances unfold during the course of the season.

    Houston's L.J. Rose granted waiver

The NCAA has granted former Baylor point guard L.J. Rose a waiver that will allow him to play immediately for Houston, Rose's father, Lynden, told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

Rose said in June that he transferred to his hometown school to be closer to his mother, Marilyn, who is stricken with lupus.

    Michael Dixon cleared by NCAA

The NCAA has cleared Memphis guard Michael Dixon Jr. to play this season.

The 6-foot-2 guard, who sat out last season at Missouri after being accused of sexual assault, will give coach Josh Pastner and the Tigers a huge lift. No criminal charges were filed against Dixon.

"We're so thankful to Josh Pastner and Memphis with everything they've done," Dixon's father, Michael Dixon Sr., told ESPN.com. "We're also thankful to the fans at Missouri. It's just a blessing he's able to play this season."

CBS: Eye on College Basketball Conference Predictions

    College Basketball Conference Previews: AAC
"The league is going to be better than people realize, especially at the top. Louisville, Memphis and Connecticut are all Top 25 teams, and Louisville could win the whole thing again. Rick Pitino is the best, and he has some great players. But it's going to come down to how well Chris Jones is at replacing Peyton Siva. He's more talented, and I think he's really good. But you just never know how junior college guys are going to adjust to this level. Memphis is really strong on paper. The addition of Mike Dixon is huge. He might end up being their best player. And don't sleep on Houston. Nobody is going to pick them in the top four. But they're good enough to finish up there. Houston has some good players."

    No 'November' for Chane Behanan

Louisville forward Chane Behanan has been suspended indefinitely from the team because of an unspecified violation of university policy, coach Rick Pitino announced Thursday.

Pitino said athletic director Tom Jurich ultimately made the decision to suspend the 6-foot-6 junior from Cincinnati. He added that Behanan is no longer living in the team dormitory, but he is still housed on campus and enrolled in classes.

    Rick Pitino talks Louisville dynasty

Much of the early talk in college basketball has centered on Kentucky's young stars, but Rick Pitino thinks defending champion Louisville can do something great.

"It's going to be an exciting season," the Cardinals coach said, according to The (Louisville) Courier-Journal. "We are one year away from a potential mini-dynasty -- one year."

Louisville has been to seven straight NCAA tournaments, made the 2011-12 Final Four and then won it all last season.

"If these players rise to the occasion once again -- win another conference championship, go back to the Final Four -- it takes three to have the makings of a dynasty," Pitino said.

Kevin Ware's memory of injury foggy

Kevin Ware has yet to watch the video of the play in which the Louisville guard broke his right leg in March.

"Never," Ware said. "When I'm done playing, I will watch it and see what happened."

Ware said his memories of the incident remain foggy.

"It was all a blur to me," he said. "I honestly don't remember much at all about it."

David Pellom to miss five weeks

Memphis forward David Pellom is expected to miss five weeks after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

Coach Josh Pastner said in a release that Pellom underwent arthroscopic debridement surgery Thursday. Pastner called it "a simple and minor procedure."

    Kevin Ware returns in exhibition

Louisville's Kevin Ware played Wednesday in his first game since suffering a gruesome broken leg 220 days ago against Duke.

Ware entered the exhibition contest against Pikeville at the Yum! Center to a standing ovation. He made his first shot, a 3-pointer, and finished with six points and four rebounds in 10 minutes.

Ware was cleared Sunday to practice with full contact for the first time since the injury, but he wasn't expecting to play Wednesday.
