No. 5 Michigan State escapes scare against Oakland

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo had no idea how Branden Dawson would play after he challenged the enigmatic forward following a disappointing effort against North Carolina.

Izzo got the answer he was looking for on Saturday.

Dawson had 16 points and 13 rebounds, helping the No. 5 Spartans hold off Oakland for a 67-63 victory at The Palace.

Adreian Payne, Michigan State roll past North Florida

Tom Izzo's banged-up Michigan State Spartans needed a game like this.

Adreian Payne scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half, and fifth-ranked Michigan State rolled to a 78-48 victory over North Florida on Tuesday night. The Spartans never trailed despite playing without leading scorer Gary Harris, who has been nursing an ankle injury.

Everybody has days at work where things just seem to be out of sync.

It happened to No. 3 Ohio State on Wednesday night.

LaQuinton Ross scored 19 points, including eight in a decisive 15-0 run in the middle of the game, to lead the lethargic Buckeyes past Delaware 76-64.

No. 3 Buckeyes rally from 8 down in final minute to beat Irish

It looked like Ohio State's winning streak to start the season was over.

The third-ranked Buckeyes were down eight points to Notre Dame with 50 seconds to play and their offense was nowhere to be found.

They still had their tough defense and somehow they were able to turn the game completely around and beat the Fighting Irish 64-61 on Saturday night in the BlackRock Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Adreian Payne's 33 points leads Spartans by Texas

Adreian Payne came through for Michigan State when teammate Keith Appling was having an off day.

Payne scored a career-high 33 points in Michigan State's 92-78 victory over Texas on Saturday, helping the Spartans (10-1) dominate the final 11 minutes of the game after the Longhorns (10-2) controlled the game early on.

"This is probably Adreian Payne's best game of his life and definitely of his Michigan State career," Spartans head coach Tom Izzo said. "We went to him just about every time and he delivered almost every time, with the way he shot from the field, from the 3-point line, from the free throw line, getting nine boards. He did a heck of a job."

Illinois hands Missouri first loss with two late free throws

    - Rayvonte Rice pulled his jersey over his head during the celebration, showing off an Illinois tattoo.

"It was a big game," Rice said after Illinois beat No. 23 Missouri 65-64 in the annual Braggin' Rights game Saturday.

No. 3 Ohio State holds Louisiana-Monroe to 31 points in win

    So much for the undercard.

Now No. 3 Ohio State must take on the heavyweights in the main events remaining on its schedule.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. scored 17 points and LaQuinton Ross added 15 to lead the Buckeyes past overmatched and undermanned Louisiana-Monroe 71-31 on Friday night.

Mitch McGary to have back surgery

Mitch McGary's season is likely over after the Michigan big man elected to have back surgery.

The 6-foot-10, 265-pound sophomore, who was dominant in March in the Wolverines' run to the national title game, has been plagued with back issues since the preseason. He sat out the first two games of the season and is averaging 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds in eight contests this season.

"My back problems have been a daily challenge ever since late August," McGary said in a statement released by the school Friday. "We have worked hard rehabbing the injury, and I thought that everything was proceeding in the right direction until the last two weeks."

    Frosh Luke Fischer leaves Indiana

Indiana freshman big man Luke Fischer, a top-100 recruit coming out of high school, will transfer to another school.

Fischer was injured in the preseason and averaged 2.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13 games this season. Indiana coach Tom Crean has used freshman forward Noah Vonleh in the middle, which has meant limited minutes for both Fischer and sophomore Hanner Mosquera-Perea.

LaQuinton Ross, Buckeyes hold off Boilermakers, improve to 14-0

No. 3 Ohio State relied on a rare commodity to derail Purdue's young shooters Tuesday.

    Experience.

LaQuinton Ross finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, both career-highs, and Shannon Scott added a career-best 18 points to help the Buckeyes pull away for a 78-69 win at Purdue -- a victory that kept Ohio State among the shrinking group of teams that will take a perfect record into 2014.

No. 5 Michigan State rallies past Penn State 79-63

Down at halftime, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo threatened to really leave his listless team behind -- as in an extra night on the road in Happy Valley.

"I told them we were staying here New Year's," Izzo said. "Everything's closed down here. It would have been a good place to keep them."

Truth is, the Spartans were getting on their plane no matter the outcome, and it was only a matter of time before they got rolling against overmatched Penn State.

Branden Dawson scored 20 points, Keith Appling had 14 and No. 5 Michigan State clamped down on defense in the second half to beat Penn State 79-63 on Tuesday night.

No. 22 Iowa beats Nebraska 67-57

Iowa looked shaky at times but Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery will take the win.

Devyn Marble had 15 points and eight rebounds and No. 22 Iowa opened its Big Ten season with a win for the first time since 2006 with a 67-57 victory over Nebraska on Tuesday night.

Nigel Hayes nets career high as Wisconsin cruises vs. Northwestern

Traevon Jackson is paying close attention to Nigel Hayes. Same for Sam Dekker, who thinks the freshman reserve is going to be a big-time player for No. 4 Wisconsin.

Jackson and Dekker are teaching. Hayes is listening, and it's paying off.

Hayes had a career-high 19 points, and the Badgers remained unbeaten with an easy 76-49 victory over Northwestern in their Big Ten opener Thursday night.

It was the substitutes' turn to step into the spotlight for No. 3 Ohio State.

Gary Harris, No. 5 Michigan State whip Indiana

Michigan State guard Garry Harris shouldn't be on the court for more than 30 minutes a game right now, according to Spartans coach Tom Izzo.

The sophomore is still trying to find his way back from an ankle injury that's kept him out of the lineup three times this season and Izzo said he isn't fit or on top of his game.

"I swear he's not what he's going to be," Izzo said.

    Tell that to Indiana.

Harris scored 26 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead No. 5 Michigan State to a 73-56 victory over the Hoosiers on Saturday.

Wisconsin holds off Iowa to remain unbeaten

Ben Brust says they were the hardest foul shots he's ever taken. Regardless of how badly they felt coming off his hand, they all went in.

Brust hit four straight free throws after Iowa coach Fran McCaffery was hit with back-to-back technical fouls, helping turn momentum in Wisconsin's favor as the No. 4 Badgers came back to beat the No. 22 Hawkeyes 75-71 Sunday night.

    Big Ten suspends Fran McCaffery

The Big Ten has suspended Iowa coach Fran McCaffery for one game Tuesday as a result of his outburst that led to his ejection during the Hawkeyes' loss at Wisconsin on Sunday.

The league also publicly reprimanded McCaffery for violating the Big Ten's sportsmanship policy and fined the school $10,000. Neither the suspension nor the fine can be appealed.

McCaffery will miss Thursday's game against Northwestern, and assistant Kirk Speraw will coach the Hawkeyes in his place.
