They don't have to refuse to play, just have everyone on the team go up to the refs before the game starts and call them C.unts. They'll get tossed. No game. But still get paid.

I don't think you are right. The players cannot be forced to work in a hostile workplace. I'm almost 100% certain they cannot be fined, it's a matter of discrimination law.

Whether it is allowed or not, I imagine some players will still do it and they will have support from the public. The NBA may even lose some support from the public for fining players taking a moral stand. In any case, it still means the NBA will lose money.

This is the thing, only the nba, players and other owners will lose. Sterling will make out like a bandit.

We're finally in agreement haha. Sterling is probably leaving with $1B at the end of the day. I think the NBA wins from a credibility standpoint though.

I think he may win the forced capital gains he loses. I see him using anti-trust, which doesn't mean shit on what he said. Hell he could be burning crosses in front of the staples center and it doesn't effect this part of the case.

Realistically, a tiny % of cases end up with a decision. They're settled because one side doesn't want to take the risk of losing.

On one hand, we have a lifetime ban and harshest rebuke. Is a lawsuit and a potential $5 billion loss (with damages, penalties, lawyer fees, etc.) something the owners are willing to risk?

The league was right to step in as quick as possible and to levy the hardest punishment they could. Sterling has gotten under fire from the tap, regardless if it was legally gotten or not, and the players no only wanted something done but where the real threat came in how it paints the league in a negative light. The sponsors pulling out of the Clippers at record time combined with how big this could blow up into is something the League wanted to be on the right end of. Coming down with the hammer looks good to not only sponsors but the players and will keep the league in the best position come the big TV negotiations next year.

If Sterling wants he can, and most likely will, take this to court and fight it for years but if the Owners vote him out and immediately start the selling of the team then is there anything Sterling can do except get more money from the lawsuit?

I wonder if David Stern regrets rigging the Chris Paul trade to the Clippers.

OT: David Geffen Interested in Buying Clippers

    http://online.wsj.com/news/articles...4579532113389840556.html?mod=rss_NBAAndKnicks

A basic rule in the sports business is that high-quality franchises in major markets don't come up for sale very often.

As a result, if the National Basketball Association is able to force Donald Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers, there will likely be no shortage of bidders for a team that plays in a city mad for pro basketball, features two of the league's biggest stars— Blake Griffin and Chris Paul —and shares a home court with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Clippers, like other NBA franchises, are getting a windfall from a new national media deal. In addition, the Clippers' local media-rights deal expires after the 2015-16 season, giving any new owner the opportunity to strike a lucrative, long-term deal at a time when local sports rights have never been more valuable.

The team could fetch roughly $700 million, possibly more, people familiar with the matter said.

With a potential sale on the horizon, attention turned to possible buyers, such as Ron Burkle, founder of private-equity firm Yucaipa Cos. and the owner of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins, and Patrick Soon-Shiong, a doctor and biotech entrepreneur. Both were in talks with potential investors during the bidding for Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011. Neither could be reached for comment.

Entertainment mogul David Geffen —who made a bid for the Clippers several years ago—remains interested in buying the franchise, according to a person familiar with the matter. Mr. Geffen, the multibillionaire music- and film-industry magnate, offered Mr. Sterling $600 million for the team about four years ago, according to people familiar with the matter, but hasn't been in contact with the league for many months, these people said.

Recent sales of the NBA's Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks have sparked interest from former Microsoft MSFT -0.88% executive Steve Ballmer and investor Chris Hansen, who want to move a team to Seattle. They could be interested in the Clippers if they could move the team to the Northwest, which would appear unlikely, as teams don't usually move out of major markets. Mr. Hansen didn't reply to an email seeking comment.

The sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011 attracted a spirited auction that included hedge-fund manager Steven Cohen and longtime cable-industry executive Leo Hindery. Potential investors in the Dodgers, which sold for $2.15 billion, about 2½ times the price for any previous baseball franchise, were largely drawn to the opportunity to launch a regional sports network that Dodgers games could anchor. Guggenheim Partners, the group that bought the Dodgers with NBA hall-of-famer Magic Johnson, is also considered a potential buyer. A spokesman for the firm declined to comment.

Mr. Geffen is among potential bidders for the Clippers after the NBA on Tuesday banned longtime owner Donald Sterling from the league for life, and said he may be forced to sell the team for making racist remarks, which were recorded and released last week on the website TMZ. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said that Mr. Sterling would be barred from contact with the team and the league and would be fined $2.5 million.

They may try to force him to sell, but I wonder how in the hell they think they can force him to pay a fine also?

This whole thing seems sort of weird, I mean the guy has done no crime, harmed no person.
He has offended the shit out of many but.... Does his punishment or desired punishment fit the
lack of a crime? Seems a little like the thought police have reached way far.

David Geffen is as cutthroat as they come in the music world. How many of his artists have had to sue him for money? Plus, he faked having a college degree when he entered the music business. I know he's openly gay, but he's still an asshole.
