    A backup point guard should definitely be our top priority this off season. With the approx 5 mil MLE and the approx 2.5 mil BAE, we should be able to get a couple solid backups.

    Here’s a list of the unrestricted free agent point guards that were backups last year:

    Jannero Pargo, PG (103 DRtg, 0.4 DWS, 4.7 ppg, 1.8 apg, 0.9 tpg, 0.5 spg, 44.1 fg%, 40.0 3p%) 10 yrs
    * Patty Mills, PG (104 DRtg, 2.1 DWS, 10.2 ppg, 1.8 apg, 0.8 tpg, 46.4 fg%, 42.5 3p%) 5 yrs
    Derek Fisher, PG (106 DRtg, 1.7 DWS, 5.2 ppg, 1.4 apg, 0.6 tpg, 39.1 fg%, 38.4 3p%) 18 yrs
    Toney Douglas, PG (107 DRtg, 0.7 DWS, 4.0 ppg, 1.3 apg, 0.7 tpg, 38.4 fg%, 30.4 3p%) 5 yrs
    * Steve Blake, PG (109 DRtg, 1.1 DWS, 9.5 ppg, 7.6 apg, 2.6 tpg, 1.3 spg, 37.8 fg%, 39.7 3p%) 11 yrs
    * Aaron Brooks, PG (110 DRtg, 0.9 DWS, 9.0 ppg, 3.2 apg, 1.6 tpg, 40.1 fg%, 38.7 3p%) 6 yrs
    * Ramon Sessions, PG (111 DRtg, 1.2 DWS, 12.3 ppg, 4.1 apg, 1.8 tpg, 42.9 fg%, 28.2 3p%) 7 yrs
    Devin Harris, PG (111 DRtg, 0.4 DWS, 7.9 ppg, 4.5 apg, 1.5 tpg, 37.8 fg%, 30.7 3p%) 10 yrs
    Beno Udrih, PG (111 DRtg, 0.3 DWS, 4.9 ppg, 2.8 apg, 1.1 tpg, 43.8 fg%, 45.2 3p%) 10 yrs
    Jordan Farmar, PG (112 DRtg, 0.4 DWS, 10.1 ppg, 4.9 apg, 2.3 tpg, 0.9 spg, 41.5 fg%, 43.8 3p%) 7 yrs
    Luke Ridnour, PG (112 DRtg, 0.4 DWS, 4.0 ppg, 2.2 apg, 0.8 tpg, 38.9 fg%, 30.0 3p%) 11 yrs
    Rodney Stuckey, SG (113 DRtg, 0.4 DWS, 13.9 ppg, 2.1 apg, 1.7 tpg, 43.6 fg%, 27.3 3p%) 6 yrs
    (starter) Shaun Livingston, PG (108 DRtg, 1.8 DWS, 8.3 ppg, 3.2 apg, 1.4 tpg, 48.3 FG%, 16.7 3p%) 9 yrs

    DRtg = pts allowed per 100 possessions <lower is better>,
    DWS = wins attributed to defense <higher is better>

    Jannero Pargo has the best DRtg, but a mediocre DWS. Not a big scorer, but shoots at a good %. Meh.

    Patty Mills has a very impressive DRtg & DWS. This is most likely due to the SA system. But none the less, impressive. Very good offensive number, with an a/t ratio greater than 2. Very good for a backup point guard.

    Derek Fisher has amazing numbers considering 18 years in the league. Not interested. Too much Laker history.

    Toney Douglas is a solid defender, but not much punch on the offensive end and less than a 2.0 a/t ratio. Meh.

    Steve Blake has solid defense numbers, solid offensive numbers, and a good a/t ratio. A safe bet for a backup point guard.

    Aaron Brooks has decent defense numbers, good offense numbers, and a good a/t ratio. Another safe bet for a backup point guard.

    Ramone Sessions has decent defense numbers, okay offense number (not a deep threat), and a good a/t ratio. Good backup point guard numbers.

    I think the defensive impact drops off quick after this point, with limited offense to make up for it.

    I listed Shaun Livingston in this list, although he was a starter last year. Good defensive numbers, and very good a/t ratio, with a good short range offensive skill set. I think someone is going to offer him a multi-year deal at starter money that we probably won’t want to risk. I'd love to pick him up using the MLE.

    I’m leaning towards Patty Mills, Steve Blake, Aaron Brooks, or Ramon Sessions as all solid choices to go after as backup point guards. If we’re looking for an offensive spark plug to replace Mo, then Patty is a good choice. If we’re looking for a good solid floor leader that can distribute the ball, then Steve Blake is the choice. Aaron Brooks and Ramon Sessions are somewhere in the middle.

    I'm a big fan of Beno Udrih. He can and has given decent minutes off the bench for playoff teams. He is some one we could get for cheap that would allow extra cap room to get some one big like luol Deng.

    If we ever want McCollum to develop we need some one like Udrih who can be successful in limited minutes.

    I really like Warren Gillis from Coastal Carolina. He's just a junior though and I don't think he declares for this draft.

    Udrich and Brooks are nice options. I'd be happy with either, I think.

    You keep mentioning him. What is it about this kid that you like? Just watched his highlights and the only thing that stood out was that he's all left hand, not very quick, average handles, average leaping ability, and he always jumps off both feet when finishing at the rim (guards can't do that in the league). Granted, it was only a 4 min highlight, but what do you like about this guy?

    He's very smart, doesn't force anything, always makes the right pass, a team player with team understanding on both offense and defense. Often makes a pass that results in another pass that leads to an easy basket. Big for a PG. Rebounds well. I think he can be a Ron Harper type player.

    Patty Mills is my choice here, Aaron Brooks is a headcase, locker room cancer. No thanks! There's a reason he can't stick anywhere. Kirk Heinrich can't throw a basketball in a swimming pool. Beno would be my second choice here but we might look at the D league and see if there's a backup there as well. That's what the Spurs seem to do, find D league talent

    He plays a zone defense. It wasn't his offensive skills that ended his days as an NBA player.

    Sergio is considered the best Point Guard in Europe right now! He has been maybe the best player (including Rudy) for Real Madrid who just beat Barcelona by 38 in the Euroleague semi-final (they play Maccabi Tel Aviv in the final game, tomorrow).
    It's not just that he is more comfortable in Spain, it's that beard he's grown, he's like a modern Samson...

    Should look for Deandre Kane of Iowa State as a potential backup point guard option. Will probably get drafted late in the 2nd round or an undrafted free agent. Averaged 17/7/6 last year. Will be 25 years old.

    Aaron Brooks. Local kid would likely sign for peanuts.

    He's a restricted free agent but the guy I really want is Greivis Vasquez.

    Gives you all of the positives of Good Mo, but even better. Has all of Mo's scoring ability, but he's a real playmaker that won't just pound the rock, can post up smaller PGs, can play next to Lillard or CJ without us compromising our size, and at 4yrs experience and 27 years of age he's not to old that he'll start declining to soon but he's developed enough to contribute right now unlike picking up a younger guy through the draft. He's played with Robin, he's been pretty healthy in his career... great fit overall.

    Only problem is the restricted free agent tag. But Toronto's gotta lock up Lowry and after they pay him, and with Ross and Val's extensions looming next year, it might be to steep a price for them to pay their backup the full MLE.

    I get the sense that Aaron Brooks is not your first choice to replace Mo?

    Sergio (sans beard) always reminded me of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Anything SRV is good enough for me.

    The Blazers already had that guy when his name was Armon Johnson.
