I have a huge mutt. She is mostly a mix between a German Sheppard and a Golden Retriever, she weighs just over 100 pounds. A week or so ago she was limping a little bit but nothing major then my family went on vacation and we let her run wild up at my Wifes Grandmas house out in Otis. The next morning she wouldnt put any weight on her left hind leg at all and seemed to be in great discomfort. After we got into Yachats we and it hadn't gotten any better I made an appointment with a vet and got her into see one yesterday. An audio graph was taken that showed no tearing but the vet was sure its at least a partial tear and really pushed surgery. I read up on surgery and a lot of stories of dog owners and im on the fence about it, im going to see if after 7 days she is doing better on because of the anti inflammatorys she was given and what my actual vet thinks when I can get my dog into see him. What id like to know is if anyone has a dog or knows someone who has a dog thats torn their ACL and how that dog healed either with or without the surgery.
Yeah..I have had to deal with the same issue. My Boxer tore his a year or so ago. The Vet offered to get a specialist to do surgery at a cost of three thousand dollars. He explained the procedure and that the end results were mixed. We also took into consideration that he has epilepsy and how the may complicate the issue. In the end we gave him some pills to relieve the swelling, kept him down for a few days, and made him take it easy. At this point he is at 90 percent. He will never do summer salts again, but he is eight, so I dont expect that. In the end, if he was one or two without other medical issues, I would have done the repair, even taking into account how severe the procedure is, but in Our case, I believe we made the right call.
Our dogs 8 as well DaLincoln which is another reason im against the surgery. Thx for the well wishes fonz.
Shit I'm kinda in the same boat. We thought our gsd had torn something but the vet seems to think it might be some kind of hereditary issue with his knee. Are you guys concerned your dogs wouldn't make it through the procedure? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
no, not the procedure itself, more the post surgery concerns. To repair the knee not only do the cut on him, but they break the leg and change the angle so that it uses a different portion of the joint.
