    Says it all imo

Sounds like a coordinator to me. No balls like Big Balls Chip.

Helfrich just doesn't belong on this stage. A Heisman quarterback is going to waste.

100% agree. I would also like to add Scott Frost to that mix as well. With all the jobs that he's interviewed for, there's a reason as to why he's still here and it's because no-one else will take him.

We shouldve hired someone known and respected. Helfrich is a good guy but he needed to go head coach a sun belt team or something before getting a shot at a top 10 program.

I think it's a great topic to bring up.

I have to go back a couple of years when Kelly left and sanctions were looming in the air to the point of uncertainty. I wonder if Helfrich was given the job with the University believing it was going to face harder sanctions then what they received and he provided a feel good story to get the fan base through the sanctions? If you think about it for a second; Oregon had to get a head coach and it was before the sanctions came down. Why would you go out and spend a lot of money on a coach when you are facing NCAA sanctions that reduces revenue?

As a Beav I was very pleased with the hires of Helfrich and Pellum. Helfrich is an OC, not a head coach. Pellum is a position coach, not a coordinator.

It's an attempt to keep the status quo, but they aren't leaders.

Helfrich was calling the plays on offense under the Kelly reign so he can dial up offense and he can coach, further he's a scary judge of talent "found Marcus and Mahalak". Our main problem is we have no O line and they're being taken advantage of out there and so is Marcus. Trust me, if we had Fisher and Johnstone out there Marcus would have another second in the pocket and that's all he needs. Further the gaps for Royce would be much bigger for him to get through and do damage. We'll get Fisher back next week and Johnstone will hub the O line next year.

As for defense, get rid of Aiken who's a crappy line coach and RECRUITER and if this D stays this painful all year, phone up Orgeron to take over the D next year. For those of you who say they've seen this D work well before so why change it? At what level has it been so successful? We don't have a national championship and that's the level we are striving year in and out now. With a new playoff structure and more games our D will have to be even better going forward. How well do you think our D would handle Bama last night or Georgia for that matter with their two amazing backs playing behind basically pro O lines? You want to be a big dog team you need a big dog D and 90th or worse nationally wont cut it. It's starts with recruiting the right type of D line players and we are miserable at that. Our coaches are not connecting with top D line talent, that simple! It's the D philosophy that needs to change to get to the level where our school is taken seriously in the same breath with Bama, OSU, LSU and the like!

Buckner and Armstead aren't top D line talent?

Armstead is a top talent, but he sure doesn't play like it.

it's funny how he wants it both ways and how regardless of the question or results the answer is always the same. On one hand he'll say the above stuff about how bad the DLine is the next he'll tell us how the 2 you mentioned are about to declare early for the draft because they're so good. Like Super Bowl champs in the past they give a variety of looks shifting between 3 and 4 down lineman, often zone blitzing more as the game goes along, yet somehow everything will be all better if they were to commit to his preferred 4-3 look. Nevermind that the Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Redskins, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans all currently regularly feature a 3-4 look, he says it's never been successful. I've seen them bring the house blitzing vs WSU, only to see Halliday flip it out quick for their 1st TD, but somehow we're told they don't blitz. I've seen Buckner aggressively slicing around his man only to have UA's Solomon go through the vacated space for crucial 1st downs, yet somehow we're told they never allow DLineman aggressively pursuit the QB. Him calling for widespread coaching and philosophical changes is a broken record I've come to expect regardless of whats happening on the field

Coach Aiken now joins Chip & Aliotti in having their heads called for by him. Somehow after 17 years in college and 6 years in the NFL, RA can't coach or recruit DLineman. Who cares that he developed All Pros in the League, or that he sent 3 Duck DLineman to the NFL last season or that they've a completely unprecedented for UO three 5* kids (Cowart, Sweat, Green & maybe Beckner too) scheduled for OVs & multiple 4* kids too... he can't recruit or coach :rolleyes2: whatever

    Stomp,

At some point in your regurgitated life I hope you'll know that there is truly a difference between a DT and a DE! Buckner and Armstead are DE's, we need DT's. Oregon has been lousy at recruiting true DT's.

So let's go over this one more time. A DT is one like Vanderchicken or Payne, NGATA, SUH and such. 6'2 to 6'5 range and 300 +. These type of players can get under pad level and create penetration not have their great height negated as often is the case with Armstead who should really be on the O line protecting Marcus this year!

That said, Oregon has not recruited more than 3 DT's Balducci being one in over 4 years. That's a problem. You run a 3-4 if you can get massive penetration from those three, and your LB's are evil and efficient to hit those holes the three nasty create! Neither is the case for Oregon right now. This is fact, 90th or worse D depending on the info you take as accurate.

We either have the wrong players and the right D as you'd like to suggest or our D concept isn't tailored to the strengths of our players, which do you think it is?

Please keep in mind we just let a redshirt freshman QB and a true freshman rb run our defense into the ground. What do you think Stanford going to do with that jumbo package they run? How about Bama or Auburn or Oklahoma for that matter?

    Keep talking mouth!

Over the past few years the NFL has become more of a passing league. The 3-4 makes much more sense. Lets hope we can snag one of those 5 stars, or two.

Our D-Line has always been a concern of mine. We have a great O-Line (and have for years) when healthy.

Well in the Pac-12 the teams that have beaten us years in a row, are beating us silly between the tackles. Stanford and Arizona are attacking our up the middle which is the one big weakness of the 3-4, further we've been gouged repeatedly this season on the 15 yard and under pass which the 3-4 is supposed to take away. This is the wrong D for our team, or those who are running it don't understand how it works. Either way 90th or worse stats don't lie. There's not much to debate here, we're just plain bad! I'll tell ya something else we should be looking into Miss St. D coordinator, those kids are well coached!

As for our O line I agree with you MickZagger, our O line coach is great and unfortunately this year we've hit a perfect storm of injuries early. We'll get some guys back this week and our offense will starting cracking again. Can't wait to see Royce and Marcus with some proper protection!

That said many teams will go down today and the top 10 will look very different next week.

We all have our little biases.

When talking NBA/NFL my first instinct is to call out the players when things go wrong. In college ball, I instead tend to point at the coaches.

Maybe in this instance I (and others) are being too hard on the coaching staff. Maybe we all need to take a step back.

The question now is "how far is down?" Two more losses? More?
